Comparison Of The Effects Of Inhaled Asthma Medications On Vocal Quality Measures, Andrew J. Chenowith
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Asthma is an inflammatory disease of the lungs and upper respiratory tree. As such, it has been shown to interfere with respiration resulting in lower vital capacities, prolonged inspirations, short expirations, coughing, wheezing and multitude of other symptoms. Speech and voice symptoms have been described including short phrases, reduced loudness, hoarseness, and low pitch. Medical treatments for asthma include a variety of anti inflammatory agents as well as bronchodiolators. By far, most anti inflammatory agents used today include inhaled corticosteroid medications. While oral corticosteroid management of asthma produced symptom relief, the adverse side effects ranging from mood changes, voice change, …
Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann
Humanistic Art Therapy Techniques, Richard J. Hemann
Graduate Research Papers
Because verbalization is our primary mode of communication we are more adept at manipulating and more facile in saying what we want to say and refraining from saying what we don't want to say than through other communicative modes. Art is a less customary communicative vehicle for most people and therefore less amenable to control. Unexpected things may burst forth in a 1 picture ••• sometimes totally contrary to the intentions of its creator. This is one of the most exciting potentialities in art therapy. Unexpected recognitions often form the leading edge of insight, learning, and growth. (Cook, 1991, p. …
Therapeutic Implications Of Parental Bereavement, Tracey R. Bishop
Therapeutic Implications Of Parental Bereavement, Tracey R. Bishop
Graduate Research Papers
The loss of a loved one is a tragedy disproportionate from any other for many people. Most individuals experience the pain from losing someone very important to them during their lifetimes. Because of the large number of people it affects, the intensity of the loss experience, and the systematic variations with which its consequences are distributed across populations, bereavement has far-reaching implications (Stroebe, Stroebe, & Hansson, 1993). Due to this inevitable fact, many mental health care professionals have shown an increased interest in death and dying issues over the past 20 years (McClowry, Davies, May, Kulenkamp, & Martinson, 1987; Rando, …

The Value Of Therapeutic Massage/Touch In Promoting Physical And Mental Health, Carmen Schreiber Huber
The Value Of Therapeutic Massage/Touch In Promoting Physical And Mental Health, Carmen Schreiber Huber
Graduate Research Papers
Humans have relied on their five senses--sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell--for purposes of communication within their environment. The most crucial of all the senses is that of touch. Touch is a basic human need and is the first form of communication humans experience (Jones, 1994). According to Colton (1983), touching is necessary throughout the lifespan. As humans mature, their reaching and touching needs change. Infants and 1 children progress from relying on their parents to being more independent and self-sufficient. The process of maturation is an important component to personal growth and development and manifests different touch needs. Buscaglia …

Conceptual Representation Of The Newtonian Model Of Motion In University Physics Students, GiannēS ChatzēGeōRgiou
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to investigate how undergraduate students at the University of Northern Iowa who had taken prior coursework on non-calculus general physics with a unit on mechanics understand the Newtonian model of motion. In general, the study was concerned with reasoning strategies, the preconceptions that give rise to these strategies, and the schema that might be inferred from the preconceptions. In particular, the study focused on the three fundamental notions of the Newtonian model of motion: (a) that uniform straight line motion is equivalent to rest, (b) that motion is relative to an inertial frame of …

Mary Queen Of Scots: The Legend Continues, Shari A. Herlein
Mary Queen Of Scots: The Legend Continues, Shari A. Herlein
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The views expressed about the life of Mary Queen of Scots from the sixteenth century onwards by poets, dramatists, and historians have created a legend around her. These views will be compared and contrasted in this paper. The works selected for this paper reflect both ends of the spectrum: Mary as a political figure ("queen") or as a romantic figure ("woman"). The purposes of the first chapter are to introduce Mary Stuart and provide a historical context for specific episodes in her life. Mary's actions in England and Scotland led Edmund Spenser arranged Mary's crimes in allegorical form in order …
Voices Unspoken And Unheard, Daniel Joseph Holman
Voices Unspoken And Unheard, Daniel Joseph Holman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Art critic Donald Kuspit proposes for the future an art which is symbolic spiritual art, a communicative extension of silent painting, it must dramatize (respiritualize, revitalize) the forms it uses to make them spiritually convincing. It does this by fusing their eternal character with a worldly content that is shown to have mystical import, inner meaning. This interaction and reconciliation generates spiritual atmosphere. (Kuspit 319)
His proposal describes the direction of my work in the series of prints, Voices Unspoken and Unheard, images of a society dehumanized through pain and isolation. The stimulus for making this work originates in what …

School Entrance Readiness And Its Effect On Student Performance, M. Susie Ford Brau
School Entrance Readiness And Its Effect On Student Performance, M. Susie Ford Brau
Graduate Research Papers
"All children in America will start school ready to learn" (Willis, 1992). While this goal sounds !audible, it has evoked mixed feelings from the leaders in the field of early childhood education. Since the 16th century, parents, educators and school districts have been plagued with the question of how to determine a child's readiness for entrance into formal schooling (Friesen, 1984). If a child is delayed from formal schooling, the result is loss of valuable learning time to which the child is entitled according to the state's school entrance age law. On the other hand, if a child is enrolled …
The Effects Of Computer Inservice And Training On The Adoption Of A Computerized Grading System, Kelli J. Diemer
The Effects Of Computer Inservice And Training On The Adoption Of A Computerized Grading System, Kelli J. Diemer
Graduate Research Papers
While technology has been entering the educational setting for many years, there are teachers who continue to be fearful about adopting computers and other technology into their classes. Whenever new technology is introduced, teachers have legitimate concerns: How does this affect my daily routine? Will this replace me as a teacher? How will I learn about the new device? Is it right for the student? (Poirot, 1992b). These concerns can be answered if the technological implementation is successful. Creating a setting that is conducive to initial teacher acceptance of the technology and an eventual adoption of the tool at a …
The Development Of Conflict Resolution Skills In Kindergarten, Pamela Goschke
The Development Of Conflict Resolution Skills In Kindergarten, Pamela Goschke
Graduate Research Papers
An issue facing schools and educators today is that of children being desensitized to violence because of their many contact hours with the media (Carlsson-Paige & levin, 1992). Media becomes a powerful tool in the socialization process, when children are constantly exposed to the idea that violence is an acceptable and effective method of solving problems. When children are exposed to violent models for conflict resolution, whether firsthand or through the media, this becomes part of their repertoire of developed responses to conflict. Building on these responses, more violence is fostered. Other positive social responses that should be part of …

Cluster Grouping Gifted And Talented Students In The Regular Classroom, Faith Y. Jurs
Graduate Research Papers
Educators are continually searching for ways to meet the unique needs of gifted and talented students. Many questions must be addressed when deciding what would be most effective m accomplishing this goal. Will gifted and talented students be served in the regular classroom or through a pullout program which requires them to leave their regular classroom for their gifted program? If they are removed from the regular classroom, what subjects will they miss? What curriculum will they complete in the program? Are students accelerated through the course work or is enrichment provided? Who will teach the gifted and talented students? …
Enrichment For All: A Successful Alternative For The Instruction Of Chapter I Students, Karmen R. Larson
Enrichment For All: A Successful Alternative For The Instruction Of Chapter I Students, Karmen R. Larson
Graduate Research Papers
The instructional approach traditionally used for the instruction of Chapter I students is that of remediation. This approach tends to enable and perpetuate low achievement in students by focusing on skills and mechanics at the students' present level of achievement. Acceleration instead of remediation can prevent students from staying behind or falling further behind grade level. This paper describes a program developed by the researcher based on acceleration as an alternative to traditional Chapter I instruction. The results of the implementation of this program with third grade Chapter I students are also presented in this paper.

Engaging Students In Mathematical Thought, Kara Ellen Schmadeke
Engaging Students In Mathematical Thought, Kara Ellen Schmadeke
Graduate Research Papers
Many early childhood educators believe that students learn by doing. This belief is Mathematical Thought 2 often translated into having students engage in activities. Play is viewed as fundamental to learning, and children engage in using manipulatives. Students actively construct knowledge through play and by interacting with others and manipulatives. This is based on Piagetian philosophy which emphasizes fixed and invariant developmental stages through which children progress. There is an emphasis on keeping from pushing students before they are ready.

Commons Components Of Literature-Based Reading Programs, Lola M. Willrich
Commons Components Of Literature-Based Reading Programs, Lola M. Willrich
Graduate Research Papers
Literature-based reading instruction is replacing traditional basal programs in many classrooms. This instructional concept focuses on providing quality literature from the different genres to develop a print-rich environment in which children can find meaningful reading experiences. These literature experiences provide structures, or whole units, in which readers can create their own meaning. In such a print-rich environment, readers can be energized to extend the reading experience by engaging in related expressive action, a connection between the comprehension and composition processes, and by interacting with others concerning the ideas and feelings generated in the reading process. These experiences can lead to …
A Problem Solving Approach In Mathematics For Second Grade Children Based On Cognitive Guided Instruction, Marla K. Wehrle
A Problem Solving Approach In Mathematics For Second Grade Children Based On Cognitive Guided Instruction, Marla K. Wehrle
Graduate Research Papers
"Virtually all young children like mathematics" (National Research Council, 1989, p.43). They come to school with knowledge assimilated naturally, based upon observations and experience. Unfortunately, instead of taking advantage of those experiences, teachers can close the door on that natural knowledge by teaching a prescribed curriculum based on accuracy, speed, and memory. Traditionally, elementary mathematics classrooms give little attention to thinking and reasoning. It is a common view under this approach, that facts and skills must first be mastered before students can reason about mathematics. The child's view of mathematics can change from enthusiasm to apprehension, from confidence to fear. …
