Trust, Respect, And Consensus: Turning Principles Into Practice, Charles K. Johnson
Trust, Respect, And Consensus: Turning Principles Into Practice, Charles K. Johnson
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
Certain basic principles lead to the growth of trusting and respectful relationships between individuals, groups, and organizations. They are commonly spoken but perhaps not so commonly practiced. Courtesy, kindness, justice, open-mindedness, and good will are the foundation stones upon which fruitful communication can be built. Yet these values are too often lost in the clash of ideas we are witnessing in the late twentieth century. Education finds itself at the center of what some have called a 'cultural war.' As our society grapples with an onslaught of perceived threats to our health, well-being, and beliefs, many in our communities have …
The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Comprehend Contrastive Stress In Sentences, Nicole M. Vancleave
The Ability Of Children With Specific Language Impairment To Comprehend Contrastive Stress In Sentences, Nicole M. Vancleave
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
Recently, researchers have studied the ability of children with specific language impairment to produce various prosodic cues, including contrastive stress (Ellis Weismer, 1992). However, there is a lack of information about the abilities of such children to comprehend this information. The purpose of the present study is to examine the capabilities of children with specific language impairment to comprehend contrastive stress in a variety of sentences.

Understanding Society's Process Of Change, Thomas Wells
Understanding Society's Process Of Change, Thomas Wells
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
At first glance, the question Whose Children? Whose Schools? seems fairly straight forward. State law requires public schools to educate all children between the ages of 5 and 16 who present themselves at our doors. But of course the real question being asked is something quite different than this simple one. The real question is how and why do we educate young people in our democracy? The issue is further confused by the increasingly pluralistic nature of our society because we, as a nation and society, have not even agreed as to whether we value this diversity. As a country, …

A Road Map For Consensus Building A Road Map For Consensus Building, David H. Swim
A Road Map For Consensus Building A Road Map For Consensus Building, David H. Swim
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
Throughout the history of our nation, education has been controversial as individuals and various groups (administrators, businesses, philosophers, politicians, parents, religious groups, students, teachers) have expressed their concern about the quality of American education. In most geographic regions/states there has been an unresolved debate regarding the definition of education, the relationship between school and community/society, the distribution of decision-making power in educational matters, and the means for improving all aspects of our educational systems. Therefore, it is the opinion of this author that a road map for negotiating the twists and turns of this diverse and bewildering landscape needs to …
Local Control, Stable Purposes And Changing Teaching Strategies: A Positive Force, Rod Wilbeck
Local Control, Stable Purposes And Changing Teaching Strategies: A Positive Force, Rod Wilbeck
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
The topic of school change, the necessity for it, and those aspects of schools that need changing has been in the forefront on the national, state, and local level during the past few years. Is there an assumption here that schools must change to meet the needs of society? If so, what aspects of a changing society should schools address? To what extent? Can one take the position that schools can anticipate the societal needs of tomorrow and meet the needs of a changing society? Adding the words, "The schools as a Positive Force" may imply that position. In my …
Use Of Ion Exchange Membranes For Selective Recovery Of Aspergillus Awamori Glucoamylase And Phage T4 Lysozyme, Deborah K. Stafslein, Jeff M. Hunter, Craig E. Forney
Use Of Ion Exchange Membranes For Selective Recovery Of Aspergillus Awamori Glucoamylase And Phage T4 Lysozyme, Deborah K. Stafslein, Jeff M. Hunter, Craig E. Forney
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Our research examined whether enhanced separation and purification of mutant enzymes could be obtained on ion-exchange membranes. Solutions of three mutants of Aspergillus awamori glucoamylase were passed through an anionic exchange membrane, as well as one mutant of T4 lysozyme through a cationic exchange membrane. The mutant enzymes were modified by adding "charged fusions'', polypeptides of either aspartic acid residues to increase the overall negative charge of the enzyme or arginine residues to increase the overall positive charge. The effect of the mutations on the purification of glucoamylase from a "modified" fermentation broth were examined at two different elution pHs, …
Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii
Age And Developmental History Of Iowa Fens, C. A. Thompson, E. A. Bettis Iii
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Iowa fens are small, mineorotrophic peatlands maintained by shallow groundwater. Eighteen fen sites located across northern Iowa were mapped and radiocarbon dated to assess the timing of initial peat accumulation. The radiocarbon ages span the Holocene, ranging from 1,240 to 10,900 B.P.; however most fens postdate 5,000 yr B.P. The dominance of late-Holocene ages suggests that Holocene climatic change may have strongly influenced the record of peat accumulation. During the mid-Holocene Iowa was warmer and drier than at present, and peat was degraded or accumulated slowly in fens. The range of ages also implies that the commencement and subsequent rate …
Parallel Algorithms For Solving Partial Differential Equations, Stacy Pschenica
Parallel Algorithms For Solving Partial Differential Equations, Stacy Pschenica
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
This paper describes the use of a parallel computer system in applying a finite difference method to solve various types of partial differential equations. A sequential implementation of this method was made parallel by essentially spatially decomposing the problem domain into pieces that could be separately analyzed and assigning each piece to a processor in a large, multi-processor system. Although this approach is attractive in theory, it suffers in practice because of inter-processor interactions. Thus, particular emphasis was placed on developing efficient methods for the sharing of information among the processors.
Initially, a simple two-dimensional board game, life, was implemented …

Analysis Of An Iowa Aridity Index In Relationship To Climate And Crop Yield, Soumare Harouna, R. E. Carlson
Analysis Of An Iowa Aridity Index In Relationship To Climate And Crop Yield, Soumare Harouna, R. E. Carlson
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
An aridity index and its components, temperature and precipitation, for the period from 1900 through April 1993 were defined and characterized. This index describes the anomalous behavior of both temperature and precipitation over time. Our intent was to examine climate variability in Iowa. Moving mean and standard deviations over various lengths of time were calculated from three time series. We found that these indices fluctuate considerably from year to year and from month to month. The lowest aridity index values occurred in the recent summer of 1992, and the highest occurred during the very drought-prone 1930s. The 12-month moving mean …
Trust: Overcoming The Fear Of It, Building It, And Accepting It, David Haggard
Trust: Overcoming The Fear Of It, Building It, And Accepting It, David Haggard
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
Trust is as fragile as a child and, like a child, must be nurtured and supported if it is to grow. Unfortunately, trust, unlike a child, never reaches independence; is never able to sustain itself without continued nurturing and support; and when injured, does not heal as quickly as a child. Trust can be characterized by the three stages identified in the title of this paper and it might, on occasion, be necessary to add a fourth stage, trust-rebuilding it.
James Autry in love and Profit (1991) suggested that trust is feared. If trust is to grow, that fear must …

Traumatic Brain Injury, Kris Marie Franzen
Traumatic Brain Injury, Kris Marie Franzen
Graduate Research Papers
During my freshman year in college, I met many interesting students, professors, and professionals. One of my most memorable acquaintances was with a young gentleman, approximately 19 years old, whose physical appearance and personality was relatively different from most other students on campus. As I spent the first few weeks of precalculus class sitting directly behind him, I became increasingly puzzled by his peculiar speech and his persistent need to have mathematical concepts and instructions continuously repeated. During mealtime, I regularly observed him sitting alone or with "superficial" friends in the same general section of the resident's dining area. His …
Linear Codes And Error-Correction, Karen Brown
Linear Codes And Error-Correction, Karen Brown
Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)
The process of encoding information for transmission from one source to another is a vital process in many areas of science and technology. Whenever coded information is sent, there arises a certain possibility that an error will occur, either during transmission or in decoding. Therefore, it is imperative to develop methods to detect and correct errors in a code. The study of coding theory is a "new" area of mathematics which is relatively undeveloped.
This paper focuses on the properties of linear codes -and their corresponding methods of error-correction. To simplify the issue, only binary block codes are studied; hence …

Iowa's Wolf In Populist Clothing: Norman Baker, 1925-1936, Eric Scott Juhnke
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
During the depression years of the late 1920s and 1930s, Muscatine, Iowa's Norman Baker stood as both a powerful and controversial figure in rural eastern Iowa. Baker's successful business empire, which at its height included a radio station, mail order enterprise, newspaper, magazine, and a cancer quackery hospital, earned the Muscatine tycoon millions of dollars in revenue over the course of a decade. Despite this business success, Baker's brash personality, vituperative broadcasting style, and fraudulent medical claims were subjects of constant controversy.
Considering both Baker's suspect reputation and the poor agricultural conditions of the day, the question remains: How did …

The Effectiveness Of Two Organizational Strategies In Sixth Grade Social Studies, Liesa Brobst Bailey
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two organizational strategies (outlining and mapping) in sixth grade social studies. Furthermore, the study sought to determine if the effectiveness of these strategies was dependent upon student learning preference; sequential or global. The effectiveness of the two organizational strategies was determined by comparing differences in group mean scores, using a 2 x 2 factorial ANOVA repeated over one factor (organizational strategy used). The study was replicated a second time. Students were asked to read and study information on the Canadian province, Nova Scotia, using the strategy: outlining and mapping, …

Use Of The Experiential Learning Model With Adolescent County 4-H Council Members, Vanette M. Grover
Use Of The Experiential Learning Model With Adolescent County 4-H Council Members, Vanette M. Grover
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Experiential learning can be traced to centuries ago, but actual models were not developed until the 1970s and beyond. The Iowa 4-H and Youth program, which is part of the Extension Service United States Department of Agriculture, has had experiential learning as its foundation since its inception early in the 20th century. Yet even 4-H, with it's well-known "learn-by-doing" philosophy, did not have a specific process with which to model learning experiences until 1992. This study examined the effectiveness of a cooperative training session which utilized the experiential learning model given to high school age leaders of the Northeast Iowa …

Voice Quality Of Individuals Exhibiting Mass Lesion: A Comparison Of Acoustic And Perceptual Measures, Heidi M. Elliott
Voice Quality Of Individuals Exhibiting Mass Lesion: A Comparison Of Acoustic And Perceptual Measures, Heidi M. Elliott
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Traditional methods for assessing voice disorders have been based on the perceptual judgments of trained listeners/professionals. These methods have been criticized due to the subjectivity of these ratings. The recent development of computer applications in communicative disorders has led to the availability of objective measures of voice characteristics. However, the specific measures useful in the diagnosis of voice disorders related to vocal pathology are not well established. The purpose of the study was to determine if there were differences in acoustic measures and perceptual judgments between pathological (mass lesion) and normal voice speakers. A total of 35 pathological (mass lesion) …
