Lost Voices: Examining Child Trafficking Across The United States And Haiti, Christi Boswood, Allison Arjes, Joryn Hanson, Kayla Mol, Josie Moreland, Allison Stewart

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

It is estimated that 1.2 million children are trafficked each year, and two children are sold every minute. These children are exposed to some of the world’s most adverse experiences. Reports show that trafficking is the second most lucrative crime in the world. This study will examine the connection between trafficking across the United States and Haiti by exploring the types of child trafficking, why it occurs, and how traffickers can control and move children across borders. It is imperative that more people understand its global and local implications on children and find ways to mitigate the practice.

Empathy, Education, & Empowerment: Reflections On The World Of Dementia, Sarah Stegge, Jordan Neely, Samantha Heyer, Elaine M. Eshbaugh

INSPIRE Student Research and Engagement Conference

At UNI's Dementia Simulation House, we offer the opportunity for participants to experience what life may be like for someone living with dementia in a home setting. About 80% of individuals living with dementia live at home in the community, and we aim to show participants what it might be like for these individuals to complete chores and activities of daily living. An individual puts on gear to experience dementia. There is a debriefing that involves writing a reaction word. We sorted the reaction words and calculated percentages on the commonality of phrases or words to examine the reactions of …

“Sit Still, Look Pretty To Survive”: An Analysis Of The Hunger Games Trilogy, Bryleigh De Jong Mar 2024

“Sit Still, Look Pretty To Survive”: An Analysis Of The Hunger Games Trilogy, Bryleigh De Jong

Research in the Capitol

At the end of a decade, a literary trilogy became a new pop culture phenomenon, The Hunger Games. The theme of appearance frequently stood out on page, however, was it truly translated on screen? Film adaptation theory explains the road to adapting a piece of literature to film is a process. All of those involved throughout the creation of cinema impact how we, as audience members, see said media. Consider the professions of the script writers, the director's ideals versus the thoughts of the author, the question of involving the original writer, creativity of the adapted world, and the audience's …

Characterization Of Mtdna Minicircles In A Chewing Louse, Geomydoecus Centralis, John Lehmkuhl, Grace Mraz, James W. Demastes, Theresa A. Spradling

Research in the Capitol

The DNA of living organisms is packaged into chromosomes differently in different species, but typically following a standard set of "rules." Understanding how DNA can be packaged for different species provides a better understanding of life and the genetic rules that must be followed, and the "rules" that can be broken. Mitochondria are crucial subcomponents of cells, providing the energy for life. Mitochondria always have their own mtDNA. In our study, we have learned that chewing lice mtDNA differs from that of other animals by spreading the genes across 12 separate small, circular chromosomes instead of one large, circular chromosome. …

Painted turtles are remarkable for their freeze tolerance and supercooling ability along with their associated resilience to hypoxia/anoxia and oxidative stress, rendering them an ideal biomedical model for hypoxia-induced injuries (including strokes), tissue cooling during surgeries, and organ cryopreservation. Yet, such research is hindered by their seasonal reproduction and slow maturation. Here we developed and characterized adult stem cell-derived turtle liver organoids (3D self-assembled in vitro structures) from painted, snapping, and spiny softshell turtles spanning ~175My of evolution, with a subset cryopreserved. This development is, to the best of our knowledge, a first for this vertebrate Order, and complements the …

Global Change Impacts On Indigenous Sustainability In Sakha Republic: A Synthesis Of Knowledge, Stanislav Saas Ksenofontov, Andrey N. Petrov

Faculty Publications

Indigenous understanding of sustainability is embedded in close relations to land and environment, Indigenous Knowledge systems, Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies, and Indigenous languages. However, the sustainability of Indigenous peoples’ livelihoods is significantly affected by various global change drivers. In the Arctic, Indigenous peoples’ livelihoods are impacted by environmental, social, and cultural changes, including climate change, environmental pollution, economic processes, and resource extraction. This paper aims to review and synthesize recent academic and gray literature on the sustainability of Indigenous communities in Sakha Republic, Northeast Siberia, Russia in the face of global change with a particular focus on land- and water-based …

Effect Of Teacher Social Support On Students’ Emotions And Learning Engagement: A U.S.-Chinese Classroom Investigation, Moyi Jia, Jiuqing Cheng Jan 2024

Effect Of Teacher Social Support On Students’ Emotions And Learning Engagement: A U.S.-Chinese Classroom Investigation, Moyi Jia, Jiuqing Cheng

Faculty Publications

Psychological and instructional communication researchers increasingly recognize the significance of student emotions in determining their engagement in the classroom. Under the direction of Emotional Response Theory (Mottet, Frymier, & Beebe, 2006), this study aims to establish a model of a college instructor’s social support, student positive and negative emotions, and student engagement in learning. It also attempts to extend this research by examining cultural differences in U.S. and Chinese classrooms and how these factors influence teacher behavior and student emotions. The result demonstrates the mediating effects of student positive emotions between teacher support and student engagement in both cultures. In …

The effects of climate change depend on specific local circumstances, posing a challenge for worldwide research to comprehensively encompass the diverse impacts on various local social-ecological systems. Here we use a place-specific but cross-culturally comparable protocol to document climate change indicators and impacts as locally experienced and analyze their distribution. We collected first-hand data in 48 sites inhabited by Indigenous Peoples and local communities and covering all climate zones and nature-dependent livelihoods. We documented 1,661 site-agreed reports of change corresponding to 369 indicators. Reports of change vary according to climate zone and livelihood activity. We provide compelling evidence that climate …

Regional Geographies And Public Health Lessons Of The Covid-19 Pandemic In The Arctic, Sweta Tiwari, Andrey N. Petrov, Nikolay Golosov, Michele Devlin, Mark Welford, John Degroote, Tatiana Degai, Stanislav Ksenofontov

Faculty Publications

Objectives: This study examines the COVID-19 pandemic’s spatiotemporal dynamics in 52 sub-regions in eight Arctic states. This study further investigates the potential impact of early vaccination coverage on subsequent COVID-19 outcomes within these regions, potentially revealing public health insights of global significance. Methods: We assessed the outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic in Arctic sub-regions using three key epidemiological variables: confirmed cases, confirmed deaths, and case fatality ratio (CFR), along with vaccination rates to evaluate the effectiveness of the early vaccination campaign on the later dynamics of COVID-19 outcomes in these regions. Results: From February 2020 to February 2023, the Arctic …

Academic Health Department Partnerships: Impacts And Implications, Madeline Kraft Jan 2024

Academic Health Department Partnerships: Impacts And Implications, Madeline Kraft

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of this paper is to give an overview of the Academic Health Department (AHD) partnerships, and the impacts that they provide to three entities: students, health departments, and academic institutions. Through AHD partnerships, internships and other kinds of field experiences are used. Internships provide an opportunity for academic institutions and students to interact with the community, provide experiences and motivations to work within the field, and cement the knowledge gained. For an AHD partnership to be mutually beneficial, it needs to provide benefits for both the academic institution, such as teaching and research opportunities, and the governmental side, …
