Purpose: This study aimed to complete a systematic review of the effect of the Brain Breaks® video program on academic performance and health-related outcomes among schoolchildren. Methods: A literature search was performed using Scopus, PubMed, ResearchGate, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases to identify published manuscripts from December 2017 to December 2023. Dissertations, theses, monographs, and commentaries were excluded from this review. Results: A total of 15 studies were included in the review. Most studies applied quasi-experimental design and were conducted in Asia and Europe with children. Faculty online learning communities (FOLCs) can help faculty effectively adopt and persist in using research-based curricula. This paper documents faculty perspectives on the value they gained from participating in a multi-year FOLC designed to help them implement an inquiry-based physical science curriculum. Personal value narratives were collected from 11 volunteer FOLC participants. In the narratives, participants responded to prompts regarding their initial reasons for participation, activities they engaged in, and values they gained, as well as how participation impacted their profession, social connections, professional practice, and ability to influence their world as teachers. Qualitative analysis shows that the values faculty …
An Analysis Of Employment Status Determinants Among Immigrants, Edina Tahirovic
An Analysis Of Employment Status Determinants Among Immigrants, Edina Tahirovic
Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics
When examining the United States economy, it is crucial to consider the immigrant population within the labor force. This paper analyzes the determinants of employment status among immigrants. A logistic regression analysis was conducted using data collected across the United States to identify possible explanations for the observed variations. In this model, I selected variables based on past research and theories that indicated their significance. To explain immigrant employment status, I tested variables including sex, age, race, citizenship, years in the United States, English proficiency, and educational attainment. The results show that some variables are statistically significant; however, there are …

Children’S Reading Of Visuals In Informational Picturebooks And Biographies, Sunah Chung
Children’S Reading Of Visuals In Informational Picturebooks And Biographies, Sunah Chung
Faculty Publications
Visuals in picturebooks play an important role in supporting children’s reading comprehension and literacy development. This qualitative case study analyzes three American families’ shared reading practices at home by analyzing their online surveys for family literacy environments, reading logs for a month, mother interviews, and video observation of their shared reading at home. The analysis of the collected data categorizes children’s responses to visuals into three major themes: reflecting personal preferences and thoughts on visuals, interpreting visuals based on prior knowledge, and misreading visuals that interfere with understanding content. The discussion focuses on the roles of visuals in informational picturebooks …

Borderline Personality Disorder Subtypes And Public Stigma, Seth A. Brown
Borderline Personality Disorder Subtypes And Public Stigma, Seth A. Brown
Faculty Publications
Despite high public stigma towards individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), no research has examined whether stigma differs among the various proposed BPD subtypes. The primary purpose of this research was to examine two potential contributors to stigma towards individuals with BPD: 1) gender, and 2) BPD subtype of the individuals. The three subtypes utilized in this study were emotional, low anxiety, and inhibited (Sleuwaegen, 2018). A total of 415 participants read 1 of 6 randomly assigned vignettes about an individual and then completed the Attribution Questionnaire which encompasses 6 aspects of stigma. Male individuals (featured in a vignette) led …

Showcasing Faculty Projects: Beyond Traditional Types Of Publications, Ellen Neuhaus

There is value in collecting and preserving faculty projects which gives a broader perspective of faculty work than just the traditional publications (books and journal articles). The projects give a fuller picture of the faculty work at UNI than if just traditional publications were collected.

Peritextual Elements In Chinese Nonfiction Picturebooks, Sunah Chung, Jongsun Wee, Sohyun Meacham
Peritextual Elements In Chinese Nonfiction Picturebooks, Sunah Chung, Jongsun Wee, Sohyun Meacham
Faculty Publications
The present work is a comparison of the peritext typology found across various nonfiction picturebooks focusing on Chinese people, including Chinese Americans. Nineteen nonfiction books were chosen following selection methods described in previous literature. Books were individually analysed to see which of five categories they fit under, and insider/outsider status for each author and illustrator was recorded as well. All five types were found in the surveyed Chinese nonfiction picturebooks; however, none of the books encouraged readers to take action for social change. We also found slight variation in peritext usage between the insiders and outsiders for authors and illustrators. …

How Is International Orchid Trade Regulated, And How Effective Are Those Regulations?, Madeline Roubik
How Is International Orchid Trade Regulated, And How Effective Are Those Regulations?, Madeline Roubik
Mary Ann Bolton Undergraduate Research Award
When investigating the trafficking of wild species, animals are often considered before plants (Phelps et al. 2015). This is especially detrimental to members of the orchidaceae family, which are victims of an extensive illegal trade. It spans the entire globe but is especially concentrated in Southeastern Asia (Phelps et al. 2015). When regarding legislation, however, orchidaceae species are some of the most protected in the world. International legislation such as CITES restricts the movement of endangered orchidaceae across borders (Hinsley 2018). The 1992 Convention on Biodiversity (Lawson et al. 2019) also has policies regarding international orchid trade. National laws regulate …

Motivation Behind Undergraduate Students Becoming Peer Educators And Associated Benefits Of The Position [Poster], Anna Laluzerne

Most research on the topic of peer education is regarding the benefits for the mentees. There is limited research on the benefits for the mentors.
It is important to understand why students are taking peer education positions in order to grow peer education programs across the country. It will be critical for students and faculty to learn the life long benefits gained from being a peer mentor.
