The Speaking Of The Honorable Harold Royce Gross In The House Of Representatives From January 3, 1949 To August 30, 1964 On The Area Of Agriculture: Analysis Of Arguments, Evidence, And Style, Bonita Jean Dostal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study analyzed the arguments, evidence, and style of the comments by The Honorable Harold Royce Gross on the subject of agriculture from the debates in the House of Representatives. Dating from January 3, 1949, to August 30, 1964, the thesis covered approximately sixteen years of the Congressman's life in politics. Separate from the analysis of his comments is a résumé of his adult life: his college training, his journalism and radio work, and his participation in politics. An additional chapter reviews the changes and problems in agriculture during that period. The three main chapters were concentrated on an analysis …

An Analysis Of Personality Characteristics And Attitudes Of High School Girls Filing Excuses From Physical Education, Jo Ann Catherine Kramer Jan 1966

An Analysis Of Personality Characteristics And Attitudes Of High School Girls Filing Excuses From Physical Education, Jo Ann Catherine Kramer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Physical educators are concerned with the attitudes held by their students toward physical education as a class activity. One main reason for this concern is that activities learned in high school physical education class are hopefully carried over into adult life to aid the individual in maintaining hie level of total fitness. In order to obtain the full benefits of a comprehensive physical education program a student must actively participate in the program. A negative attitude toward physical education activity or toward the class can affect an individual's degree of participation. Physical educators usually feel that an individual who does …

A History Of The Iowa Central Railway: An Abstract Of A Thesis Submitted In Partial Fulfillment Of The Requirements For The Degree Master Of Arts, Donovan L. Hofsommer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

During the winter of 1836-7, John Plumbe called a meeting in Dubuque to "discuss the railroad question."1 The meeting "was held in a frame building ... on the west side of main street" and those in attendance heard the immodest Mr. Plumbe . advocate "the feasibility of the construction of a railroad from Milwaukee to Dubuque, as a link by which the lakes would be connected with the Mississippi."2 At least one man in attendance voiced the opinion that Plumbe was a visionary and others felt that his thinking "might have been a little premature. 113 Undaunted, Plumbe …

Value Patterns In Three Midwest Colleges, John R. Tisdale Jan 1965

Value Patterns In Three Midwest Colleges, John R. Tisdale

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Allport, Vernon, Lindzey Study of Values reported norms were compared with scores from a sample from three midwest liberal arts colleges. The total college group consisted of 440 Ss, 183 males and 257 females. The individual samples showed both resemblances to and differences from each other and the appropriate sex norms, when they were examined on the basis of the mean values obtained for each of the test's six variables and of the relative rank assigned to each. The composite group showed differences in amounts rather than ranks on the scales. It was concluded that the appropriateness of the …

Specific Antibodies For Mycoplasma In Pheasants On Game Farms In Lowa, Steven Palmer, David J. Roslien

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Serums from 838 ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) reared on 28 Iowa game farms were tested for Mycoplasma gallisepticum specific antibodies. Two hundred serums reacted with tube agglutination antigen, but only eight were confirmed with the hemagglutination-inhibition test.

Psychological Scaling Of Language Development Of Children, Dorothy Sherman, Thomas Shriner, Franklin Silverman Jan 1965

Psychological Scaling Of Language Development Of Children, Dorothy Sherman, Thomas Shriner, Franklin Silverman

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Certain aspects of the use of psychological rating scale methods for measuring degrees of language development in the speech of children are evaluated. That typed samples from children's speech can be scaled reliably is demonstrated. Comparisons are made among correlation coefficients which were obtained for the purpose of estimating relationships among three measures of language development for the same set of 50 samples of children's language: structural complexity scores obtained by analysis of the samples; scale values of intricacy of language usage obtained by the psychological scaling method of Equal-Appearing Intervals; and mean estimates of age derived from sophisticated observers' …

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann Jan 1965

The Influence Of The Antithyroid Drug, Tapazole, On Reproduction In Rats, Daniel T. Geittmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The antithyroid drug, Tapazole (methamazole, or imidazole-2-thio, 1-methyl), when fed to female rats at the dietary level of 0.1 % had a slight effect on the average number of young and weight per litter if administered during the preconception period. If given during the gestation period the results were harmful. Tapazole treatment of mothers during lactation resulted in lethargic cretin-like young, although survival rates during lactation and after weaning were good.

A Study Of Auditory Discrimination In Lower Elementary Children, Gloria Joan Bahr Jan 1965

A Study Of Auditory Discrimination In Lower Elementary Children, Gloria Joan Bahr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Verbal communication, i.e., speech, is the only unequivocal "human" trait. It is a process of several dimensions which has been the object of many investigations. Auditory discrimination seems to be an essential element in the process of verbal communication and has received much attention, both in the area of normal speech and in speech pathology. Van Riper has suggested that auditory discrimination is both a goal and a technique in speech retraining. He believes that a child with a sound substitution may be unaware that any substitution has occurred. Because the auditory sensations of the correct and incorrect sound may …

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates Jan 1965

An Investigation Of Social Science Materials That May Be Used As Background Reading In A Literature Program, Allan F. Gates

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Today, as perhaps at no time previously, the English department of the American high school has come in for scrutiny and alteration. The most recent convention of Iowa English teachers (April, 1965) found new programs in literature to be "exciting," new approaches to writing "exciting," new developments in advanced classes "exciting". Innovation and renovation are a part of the scene. As many English teachers are beginning to learn, changes in curriculum and in text materials and in approach to the subject are coming so rapidly that no one has had time to assess the changes or to draw any concrete …

A Study Of The Development Of The Wochenlied Plan With Reasons For Its Decline During The Eighteenth Century, David Paul Held Jan 1965

A Study Of The Development Of The Wochenlied Plan With Reasons For Its Decline During The Eighteenth Century, David Paul Held

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The Wochenlied, also known as the "Hymn of the Week" or the "de tempore hymn," was a product of the Reformation. Its inception was found in the attitude of Martin Luther toward congregational singing, his resulting emphasis upon the chorale as the vehicle for such singing, and his liturgical reforms. The Wochenlied plan became an integral part of Lutheran worship practice in Germany during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Its growth was fostered during the first one hundred years following the Reformation during which a favorable liturgical, musical, and educational climate for the development of this hymn plan was present. …

Formation Constants Of The Copper(Ii) Compounds Of Pyridylalpyridylhydrazine, L. Keith Hunt, Harvey Diehl Jan 1965

Formation Constants Of The Copper(Ii) Compounds Of Pyridylalpyridylhydrazine, L. Keith Hunt, Harvey Diehl

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bivalent copper and the Schiff's base pyridylalpydidylhydrazine form two compounds, composed respectively of one molecule and of two molecules of the organic compound to one atom of copper, and having ultra violet absorption spectra differing only in the value of the molar extinction coefficients at the absorption maxima, 15,100 and 22,450, respectively at 345 mμ. The respective formation constants are 2.4 x 105 and 2.8 x 105 as determined from spectrophotometric data, the method used being unusual in that the ultra violet absorption data provided a direct measure of the free ligand present.

The Effects Of The Alaskan Earthquake Of March 27, 1964, On Ground Water In Lowa, Ronald W. Coble Jan 1965

The Effects Of The Alaskan Earthquake Of March 27, 1964, On Ground Water In Lowa, Ronald W. Coble

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The large Alaskan earthquake of March 27, 1964, affected all the major aquifers in Iowa. The effects included (1) seismic fluctuations of the water level; (2) turbid water; and (3) a permanent change in some water levels. A change in the porosity of the aquifers is postulated as an explanation for the permanent water-level changes.
