The High School Teacher Lag: A Problem For The Profession, Ben A. Green Jr. Jan 1967

The High School Teacher Lag: A Problem For The Profession, Ben A. Green Jr.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The problem of inadequate numbers of high school physics teachers and the poor preparation of many of those who do teach physics is one of the most serious problems which faces our profession. The CCP has activated a panel (the Panel on the Preparation of Physics Teachers) to give full-time attention to this problem and to recommend courses of action to the Commission. The following is a report by CCP Staff Physicist Ben A. Green, Jr., on leave from Western Reserve University, who recently visited several institutions which have been unusually successful in producing high school teachers of physics.

Lithostratigraphy And Petrology Of The Bertram Member Of The Wapsipinicon Formation (Devonian) In East-Central Iowa, Norman K. Church

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Rock samples were collected from the Bertram Member of the Wapsipinicon Formation in six quarries in Linn County, Iowa. Polished sections and thin sections were made of selected samples and were studied by use of binocular and petrographic microscopes. Sample cuttings from selected wells in east-central Iowa were studied for the presence of Bertram lithologies. An isopachous and paleogeologic map of Bertram strata was prepared from the data obtained from surface and subsurface samples. Prior to Bertram deposition east-central Iowa was exposed to subaerial erosion. The first sediments of the Middle Devonian transgressive sea were deposited on a supratidal mudflat …

The Performance Of Trained And Untrained Listeners In Rating Defective /R/ Along A Continuum, Mary Ann Dostal Jan 1967

The Performance Of Trained And Untrained Listeners In Rating Defective /R/ Along A Continuum, Mary Ann Dostal

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Modification of deviant speech patterns begins with identification of the factors responsible for the deviancy. Agreement between speech clinicians (trained listeners) and parents and teachers (untrained listeners) on the nature of errors may be important in a successful clinical services program. Previous studies investigated differences between trained and untrained listeners in the number of "correct-incorrect" decisions they made about speech sounds. This study dealt with the ability of listeners to rate defective /r/ sounds along a r--w continuum. Two groups of listeners were used; a trained group made up of twelve graduate speech clinicians enrolled in a summer session at …

The Development Of Criteria For The Evaluation Of Student Teacher Programs, Ramon H. Green Jan 1967

The Development Of Criteria For The Evaluation Of Student Teacher Programs, Ramon H. Green

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to develop a set of evaluative criteria to be used in the analysis of student teaching programs. The approach to the study of the problem was to survey the literature of the field by known experts to determine their thinking on what is a good student teaching program. From this authoritative source, a set of evaluative criteria in the form of a checklist was developed.

Student teaching programs have been under much criticism in recent years. Since student teaching is considered the one most important experience in any teacher education program, problems related to …

A Survey Of In-Service Education Techniques In Self-Contained Junior High Schools In The State Of Iowa, Robert Dean Eastman Jan 1967

A Survey Of In-Service Education Techniques In Self-Contained Junior High Schools In The State Of Iowa, Robert Dean Eastman

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The rapid evolution of junior high schools and their incorporation into school organizations throughout Iowa has created a demand for teachers who are particularly adept in working with adolescents, who understand the transitionary nature of young students, and who are conscious of the exploratory nature of the junior high school program. Few institutions of higher learning in the mid-west region, however, specifically include the junior high major in their pre-service preparation of teachers, A strong in-service educational program, then, is essential for the improvement of the instructional program.

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study (1) to investigate current practices in conducting teachers' meetings in some selected elementary schools in Iowa and the United States and (2) to formulate some guidelines that can help Filipino elementary school administrators and supervisors improve their practices in conducting teachers' meetings.

The questionnaire was the major research tool used to investigate current practices in conducting faculty meetings in selected elementary schools in Iowa. In the construction of this device, the first step undertaken by the researcher was to make an intensive review of the available literature on the subject. The purpose in …

The English Second Person Pronoun: Its History And Its Significance In Shakespeare’S Richard Ii, Mary Janet De Jong Conley Jan 1967

The English Second Person Pronoun: Its History And Its Significance In Shakespeare’S Richard Ii, Mary Janet De Jong Conley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The English language has undergone many changes since its evolution from the Teutonic dialects. It has become simplified in many ways; one area of simplification is in the second person pronoun. Originally nine different forms of the Old English pronoun of address appeared, while today only three {you, your, yours) remain. Although ambiguity can and does result from only one form in the nominative and objective case (i.e., whether you is singular or plural in reference), the English-speaking people have reduced the pronoun to the same nominative and objective form as a means of linguistic economy. The problem of ambiguity …

Occurrence Of Waterfowl Along A Proposed Lmpoundment, The Saylorville Reservoir, William H. Schmidt, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Waterfowl were studied from early fall 1958 through spring 1959 along selected Des Moines River segments that will be affected by the Saylorville reservoir (now under construction). Periodic counts conducted during fall and spring yielded a total of 1,948 waterfowl (18 species) and 4 coots. During fall three species of geese (410) and five species of puddle ducks (302) were seen. Spring counts indicated 1,186 ducks of 14 species, including diving ducks (8%) and mergansers (11%). Four puddle duck species made up 74% of spring duck populations. Waterfowl per mile data were considered more valuable that waterfowl per hour data …

Selected Problems In Measuring Extrinsic Religious Values, John R. Tisdale, Larry Walrath Jan 1966

Selected Problems In Measuring Extrinsic Religious Values, John R. Tisdale, Larry Walrath

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study deals with problems which have arisen in attempts to measure Allport's construct, extrinsically valued religion. Results here tend not to confirm the homogeneity reported for Wilson's Extrinsic Religious Values Scale, nor has a revised form correlated well enough with the original to be considered equivalent. It is concluded that if the construct is basically valid, then considerable work remains to be done on measurement and concurrent definitional revision.

Void Ratio And Shear Strength Of Two Compacted Crushed Stones, Fernando H. Tinoco, Richard L. Handy, James M. Hoover Jan 1966

Void Ratio And Shear Strength Of Two Compacted Crushed Stones, Fernando H. Tinoco, Richard L. Handy, James M. Hoover

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Triaxial compression tests of two crushed limestones of differing highway service records indicate a fundamental difference in their shear strength-void ratio relationship. Analyses were based on stress parameters at minimum sample volume, i.e., before there was significant sample dilation due to shear. The better service record sample compacted to higher density, and had a high effective angle of internal friction and zero effective cohesion. The other sample compacted to lower density and had a lower friction angle, but gained significant stability from effective cohesion. Repeated loading-unloading cycles reduced the cohesion, apparently due to modification of the sample structure. Extrapolations of …

History Of The Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1966

History Of The Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The history of the Iowa Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit is traced from its beginning as a locally sponsored agency in 1932. It became one of the Wildlife Units when the National program was established in 1935. The late J. N. (Ding) Darling, nationally prominent cartoonist, conceived and negotiated the establishing of the Research Unit program. His belief in the soundness of the research unit idea is witnessed by the fact that he helped to finance the Iowa Unit from his personal funds during its first 3 years of existence. The succession of Unit leaders, and their specialties, the increase in …

Historic Pennsylvanian Ammonoids From Iowa, W. M. Furnish, Claude Spinosa Jan 1966

Historic Pennsylvanian Ammonoids From Iowa, W. M. Furnish, Claude Spinosa

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Pennsylvanian goniatite species Wiedeyoceras sanctijohanis (Wiedey) was described in 1929 on the basis of two specimens from Greene County, Iowa, collected by O. H. St. John about 1865. An additional lot of specimens representing this species has been secured from a locality only about four miles northwest of the original site. The new material serves to give a better understanding of this fossil and a basis for comparison with comparable specimens from Missouri and elsewhere.

Helminth Parasites Of Rails And Host-Parasite Relationships Of The Trematode Protechinostoma Mucronisertulatum, Bryce C. Redington, Martin J. Ulmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In a survey of 15 soras (Porzana carolina) and 31 Virginia rails (Rallus limicola) collected in Iowa during May-September 1963, Protechinostoma mucronisertulatum was the most frequently encountered trematode of the sora. It does not occur in the Virginia rail. Experimentally-developed metacercariae and adults were obtained and host-parasite relationships studied with special reference to annual incidence of infection in snails. Additional helminths of the sora and the Virginia rail include several representing new host records.
