Teaching The Fundamentals Tomorrow, Ray E. Wagner, W. Barnett Pearce Jan 1969

Teaching The Fundamentals Tomorrow, Ray E. Wagner, W. Barnett Pearce

Iowa Journal of Communication

This is the era of the knowledge explosion and the communication revolution. Never before has so much information been so readily available with so many different media to transmit it. Never before has man been bombarded with so many different messages competing for his time, his energy, and his allegiance. The future promises that this trend will accelerate: a world of research will quadruple information and the technology of communication will find students carrying computers in their lunch pails and personalized telephones in their shirt pockets. Exaggeration, you say - maybe for today, but certainly not for tomorrow.

Pinter: Absurdist Cum Traditionalist, Edward J. Thorne Jan 1969

Pinter: Absurdist Cum Traditionalist, Edward J. Thorne

Iowa Journal of Communication

Man is adrift in a chaotic universe. He proceeds from no base of divine law, and he moves toward no destination, physical, moral, or spiritual. Each individual, his personality and his being the product of a series of accidents, spends a brief solitary time in the emptiness of life, hermetically sealed, with no possibility of communication with anyone else. In this view life, existence, is meaningless-absurd. As a way of making meaningless existence tolerable, man has invented a network of myths concerning his origins and destiny as well as relationships among men. The entire network is a fabrication with no …

Nomenclature Of Some Pennsylvanian Upper Cherokee (Desmoinesian Series) Coals Of Iowa, Stephen A. Hall Jan 1969

Nomenclature Of Some Pennsylvanian Upper Cherokee (Desmoinesian Series) Coals Of Iowa, Stephen A. Hall

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The nomenclatural history of some Upper Cherokee coals of Iowa is reviewed, beginning with the 1870 geological survey. The Lacona, Panora, Wheeler, Marshall, and Lonsdale coals were named by St. John. The two more important coal beds, the Panora and Wheeler, are discussed in detail. The Panora, described in Guthrie County, was in 1927 renamed Whitebreast by A. L. Lugn for exposures in Lucas County within half a mile of St. John's type section of the Wheeler Coal. At the time of description both coals were measured at each type section in NE¼ sec. 33, T. 73 N., R. 22 …

Open Letter To Science Teachers: Let's Reflect For A Moment . . . ., Lynn W. Glass

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Did you greet eager, inquisitive students last September that for some reason unknown to you became inactive and bored by May? What possibly is the cause for the decline in student enthusiasm?

Understanding Of Science By Elementary Teachers, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1969

Understanding Of Science By Elementary Teachers, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This paper reviews some studies relating to the subject matter competency of pre-service elementary teachers. Attention is called to the importance of an understanding of the nature of science by the elementary major, and the need to measure this understanding. A study designed to test the understanding of and attitude toward science in elementary majors is discussed. The scores of elementary majors on the understanding of science measure are compared with those of other prospective teachers (both secondary and elementary). It is suggested that a measure of this type could be used as a basis for evaluation of innovations in …

The Iowa State Preserves System was formed by action of the 61st General Assembly in 1965. It is administered by the State Advisory Board for Preserves. The function of the board is to locate, dedicate, direct management, and protect areas of natural, archeological, historical, geological or scenic value. To date nine areas have been dedicated: Hayden Prairie, Kalsow Prairie, Pilot Knob State Park, Sheeder Prairie, and White Pine Hollow, as Nature Preserves; Fish Farm Mounds, Turkey River Mounds, and Wittrock Indian Village as Archeological Preserves; and Fort Atkinson as a Historical Preserve. Nine additional areas have been recommended for preserve …

Statistical Methods For Integrating Populations Of A Fauna Collected At Various Localities, D. E. Simon, J. H. Elwell Jan 1969

Statistical Methods For Integrating Populations Of A Fauna Collected At Various Localities, D. E. Simon, J. H. Elwell

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Parametrs characteristic of Atrypa Histrix, collected from various localities of the Cerro Gordo Member of the Upper Devonian Lime Creek Formation, were measured as: 1) Length, 2) Width, 3) Thickness, 4) Number of growth lines, and 5) Number of plications. The consistency of data obtained within a sample location was tested against similar data representing the total population by means of F-tests. Results suggested that the three sample locations represented at least two statistically random sample populations. These statistical differences in the single biologic population may be alternately interpreted as: 1) the population differed prior to preservation, or 2) is …

Differences In Campus Attitudes, Academic Achievement And Socio-Economic Background Between Student Leaders, The Students For A Democratic Society And The Student Body At-Large At The University Of Northern Iowa, Oral M. Custer Jr.

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to identify similarities and differences between three groups of students, the Student Senate, the Youth for a Better Society (Students for a Democratic Society when the study was initiated), and a sample of students representative of the student body at-large at the University of Northern Iowa. These groups were objectively and subjectively evaluated to identify any similarities and differences in (1) their attitudes toward the University, (2) their academic achievement and aptitude, and (3) their socio-economic background. Objective measures of these variables included the College and University Environment Scales (CUES), cumulative grade point averages, …

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger Jan 1969

The Field Of Speech, Douglas Ehninger

Iowa Journal of Communication

Teachers of speech, even more perhaps than teachers in other field, occasionally need to stop and take stock. What, after all, is this subject or discipline that we profess? On what basis does its claim to independence rest? What is the proper business of a department of speech? What, ideally, should the study of speech entail? What areas of investigation and research are our special property? In what ways does training in speech contribute to a liberal education?

A Study Of Gesture In Elocution And Oral Interpretation During The Years 1870 To 1930 In The United States, Faith Alene Engelkes

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this thesis was to make an historical study examining a selected list of textbooks dealing with the subject of gesture in elocution, expression, or oral interpretation between the years 1870 and 1930 in the United States. A preliminary chapter reviewed the backgrounds of elocution in the United States before 1870. The succeeding chapters reviewed the textbooks chosen for study for each twenty-year period to gain an insight into each author's philosophy of teaching gesture in delivery. Each textbook contained definitions of the various terms involved, which definitions also served to disclose the author's attitude toward the teaching …

Seven Paintings: A Personal Search For An Ethical Consciousness, Dennis Myron Dake Jan 1969

Seven Paintings: A Personal Search For An Ethical Consciousness, Dennis Myron Dake

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Success as an artist is dependent on the development of an ethical consciousness. The seven paintings which make up the thesis may reflect this awareness or ethical consciousness. The written comments are included to supplement and amplify the information communicated by the seven paintings of the thesis. The values that make up an ethical consciousness are not absolute, they are constantly being sought. This writing deals with that continuing search. Ethical consciousness is described here as consisting of three basic elements; appropriate attitude development, predisposition to accept the adventure of exploring the unknown, and sensitivity in dealing with all aspects …

Curriculum Evaluation Study And Recommended Revision For Dakota Christian High School, Martin Dekkenga

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to determine whether the curriculum at Dakota Christian High School (DCHS) was meeting the needs of its graduates. An auxiliary purpose_ was to share with the National Union of Christian Schools the findings of the study so that all member schools could have access to the information and thereby improve their own program or interest them in such an evaluation. The data was gathered by use of a questionnaire. Copies of the questionnaire were sent to most of the graduates of the ten graduating classes of DCHS. One hundred seventy-nine graduates were contacted and …

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen Jan 1969

Generation Ebb: A Novella, Charlene M. Eblen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Two things essential for the development of experimental science are the cooperation of many workers and the keeping of careful records of their work. A major problem for the experimental scientists of the seventeenth century was the lack of both cooperative effort and systematic records. The scientific work early in this century was scattered, intermittent, and recorded, if at all, haphazardly. The purpose of this paper is to show how Henry Oldenburg, during his first five years as secretary to the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge, developed patterns of communication which brought the experimental philosophers together to …

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston Jan 1969

A Comparison Of Results Of Two Methods Of Teaching Reading In The First Grade, Melvin Wayne Thurston

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

An examination of the grade-equivalent scores attained in vocabulary and reading comprehension by third-grade pupils at Hudson Community School on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills over the preceding four-year period revealed that many of the pupils were seriously retarded in reading. During this period a total of 210 third-grade pupils were tested. Thirty-one per cent of these pupils scored one or more years below the norm for Iowa third-grade pupils in vocabulary, and the same level of retardation was true in reading comprehension for twenty-seven per cent of these pupils.

Most of these pupils had been taught beginning reading …

A Developmental Study: Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Articulation, Cheryl Kay Greiner Jan 1969

A Developmental Study: Effects Of Delayed Auditory Feedback On Articulation, Cheryl Kay Greiner

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was suggested that further investigation of the effect of delayed auditory feedback on articulation at various age levels might lead to a better understanding of the development of the self-monitoring system of ongoing speech. The present study was concerned with the effect at various age levels of delayed auditory feedback on the number of articulation changes (errors) and on the number of each major articulation error type. Ten subjects in each age group of 5-5½, 7½-8½, and 18-23 years repeated five seven-syllable sentences, first under a condition of synchronous auditory feedback then with a delayed feedback of .23 second. …

Carbohydrate Breakdown In Cell Walls Of Collenchyma Of Celery, Waldo S. Walker, Thomas Hoeltgen Jan 1969

Carbohydrate Breakdown In Cell Walls Of Collenchyma Of Celery, Waldo S. Walker, Thomas Hoeltgen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Celery plants (Apium graveolens L.) were placed in darkness for 18 days and the collenchyma cells of the petioles of these plants were subjected to acid hydrolysis and qualitative and quantitative analyses to determine the effect of prolonged dark treatment on the metabolism of the wall components. Chromatographic separation and spectrophotometric measurement of the amounts of sugars present after 18 days of treatment indicated a great reduction in amounts of galactose and arabinose, a smaller reduction of mannose and xylose, and no reduction of glucose. The changes reported are attributed to a possible metabolic turnover of wall materials brought about …

Notes On Prairie Species In Iowa. Ii. Establishment By Sod And Seedling Transplants, Paul A. Christiansen, Roger Q. Landers Jan 1969

Notes On Prairie Species In Iowa. Ii. Establishment By Sod And Seedling Transplants, Paul A. Christiansen, Roger Q. Landers

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Success in establishment of prairie species was measured using sod and seedling transplants. Sod transplants, 25 cm in diameter and 10-20 cm in depth, were successful for 42 species. Fourteen species present in sod transplants set in both annual weeds and Bromus inermis sod illustrated the effect of competition on vigor. After two years, in the weedy plot, all species were present, 11 had flowered and 5 had spread. In the Bromus plot, 9 species had died, 2 had flowered and none had spread. Seedling transplants of 48 of 52 prairie species were present after overwintering. One-quart plastic bags and …

Recent Status Of Ruffed Grouse In Iowa, Eugene D. Klonglan, Gene Hlavka Jan 1969

Recent Status Of Ruffed Grouse In Iowa, Eugene D. Klonglan, Gene Hlavka

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The ruffed grouse is a native Iowa game bird, formerly present in forested areas over much of the state. Intensive land use that replaced forested areas with croplands or grazed them heavily with livestock resulted in the disappearance of the species from all but northeastern Iowa by about 1930. Ruffed grouse are presently found in suitable forested habitat in all of Allamakee and Clayton Counties, most of Winneshiek County and in portions of Fayette, Dubuque, Delaware and Howard Counties immediately adjacent to occupied range in the three counties first listed. Spring roadside drumming counts have given an index of 1.6 …

The Effect Of An Electromagnetic Field On Early Emhryogenesis In Quail, Thomas Knutson Jan 1969

The Effect Of An Electromagnetic Field On Early Emhryogenesis In Quail, Thomas Knutson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Incubating quail embryos in a magnetic field resulted in accelerated somite growth. Twenty % of the experimental embryos in one series of experiments exhibited reversed torsion. The heterogenous magnetic field as opposed to the homogenous magnetic field was more effective in causing these effects. The theory of magnetic action on a biological system is discussed.

Rationale For Sequence Of High School Science Courses: Argument For Change, James M. Moulton Jan 1968

Rationale For Sequence Of High School Science Courses: Argument For Change, James M. Moulton

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In this time of rapidly evolving curricula, it is, I fear, redundant and presumptuous for a professor of biology to comment upon secondary school education. This is particularly so if he lacks experience in the problems of secondary school administration and teaching as does the present author. The problems of adequate preparation and appealing to student interests that one encounters at the college and university levels among relatively highly selected students are magnified many, many times at the high school level.

Writing And Evaluating The Laboratory Report, David N. West Jan 1968

Writing And Evaluating The Laboratory Report, David N. West

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

All too often the time-consuming duties of classroom instruction cause laboratory evaluation to take on a minor role. Publishers also have added to this dilemma by burgeoning the market with fill-in-the-blank type laboratory manuals. This paper shows how proper orientation of the student in his laboratory reporting encourages communication skills that include the ability to interpret, analyze, and transmit facts and ideas graphically and in writing. A cognitive approach to the evaluation of these communicative skills may not eliminate paper grading but it will do much toward making it briefer and more productive.

This Is What I Am!!, Milbert H. Krohn Jan 1968

This Is What I Am!!, Milbert H. Krohn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Getting to know science teachers about the state is somewhat of a problem for the teacher in smaller Iowa high schools. I suspect that this is a problem of communication rather than one of design by those of us in the less urban areas. When it was suggested that the Iowa Science Teachers' Journal be an avenue for establishing contact I was at first reticent about telling of myself.

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Moisture Contents In A Small Loess Watershed In Tama County, Lowa, W. J. Vreeken Jan 1968

Stratigraphy, Sedimentology, And Moisture Contents In A Small Loess Watershed In Tama County, Lowa, W. J. Vreeken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A traverse across a small first-order watershed in loess has been studied. The loess is Wisconsin in age and has a vertical tripartition that can be explained on a regional basis. Clear stratification is present in the middle loess increment. Moisture distribution patterns correlate highly with differences in particle-size distribution. The explanatory physical phenomena must be moisture-tension relationships.
