The Current Status Of The Limnology And Bottom Fauna Of Lakes West And East Okoboji, David D. Gale, Everette E. Drevs, Michael P. Gross

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lakes West and East Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, were the site of a 1970 summer investigation on the density and diversity within the macroscopic bottom organisms, physical and chemical measurements of the water and substratum chemistry study. These data on Lake West Okoboji were compared with a 1918 and 1950 study of the macroscopic bottom fauna, water analyses dating from 1934, and oxygen and temperature data from as far back as 1915. The sparse species composition of the bottom fauna has remained unchanged; however, pollution indicator tubificid worms have increased in density. Water analysis, oxygen, and temperature data are little …

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross Jan 1973

Individualized Instruction? I Tried It And It Worked!, Michael Gross

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"Individualized instruction? — I tried it and it didn't work!" This is the statement that is frequently heard at professional meetings and in visiting with teachers. Upon further examination, it is usually found that the individuals making the statement only tried an individualized approach for a very short period of time. The frustrations they had experienced were usually that l) most kids sat around doing nothing, 2) it was impossible to manage the paperwork in keeping track of where each student was, and 3) the time required to develop individualized units and materials just wasn't worth the reward in terms …

What One More Professional Could Do For The West Junior High Library, Terry Dutcher Jan 1973

What One More Professional Could Do For The West Junior High Library, Terry Dutcher

Graduate Research Papers

The West Junior High School faculty consists of 1200 students and fifty-five certified teachers. This figure includes one principal, one vice-principal, three counselors, and one librarian.

As one can see, one librarian, or media specialist, is not enough professional manpower to fully implement the dynamic library program that is needed in West Junior High. To quote from Standards of School Media Programs: •It is recommended that the media center have one media specialist for every 250 students or major fraction thereof.

The Library And The Disadvantaged, Ruth Millar Jan 1973

The Library And The Disadvantaged, Ruth Millar

Graduate Research Papers

The conscience of America woke to the problems of their 'disadvantaged' in the nineteen-sixties. Our public institutions slowly pulled themselves away from the apathy they found themselves mired in; and began at last to try to serve the people they had so long ignored. The public libraries of our cities looked around them and found, much to their surprise, that the middle-class whites they had so long catered to were no longer there. They had been replaced by a group of peoples that now were lumped under the heading 'disadvantaged.' Cornelius L. Golightly, speaking at a conference on the 'disadvantaged', …

A Study Of Career Information Materials In Communications And Media For The Junior High School Student, Pearl Fruth Miller

Graduate Research Papers

Because school-based career development programs under the current career education emphasis, are to become integrated into the total curriculum, every person in the school system has a role to play in helping to develop and implement the program. Teachers need materials to assist them in designing programs, and students need resources in their search for values and career information.

Parkinson's Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy And Dopa Metabolites, Dee Edward Silver, J. I. Routh, A. L. Sahs, Richard Anderson Jan 1973

Parkinson's Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy And Dopa Metabolites, Dee Edward Silver, J. I. Routh, A. L. Sahs, Richard Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an attempt to clarify the effect of amantadine hydrochloride therapy in Parkinson's disease, dopa metabolites were measured in the urine of 15 patients who were taking this medication. The results indicated that patients on amantadine therapy had lower urinary levels of epinephrine plus norepinephrine than either normal individuals or parkinsonian patients not receiving amantadine. Patients who developed livedo reticularis during amantadine therapy showed a small but significant increase in urinary dopamine levels and a similar decrease in dopac levels, when compared to other patients on amantadine who did not develop livedo reticularis.

Notes On The Pupation Of The Sawfly, Trichiosoma Triangulum (Hymenoptera), Betty J. Burch

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Trichiosoma triangulum pupae have previously been found only beneath the ground. However, a pupa of T. triangulum was collected from a sapling in Michigan in the Fall of 1971. This find may indicate a need to revise the life history as it is now understood.

Type Kinderhook Ammonoids, W. M. Furnish, Walter L. Manger Jan 1973

Type Kinderhook Ammonoids, W. M. Furnish, Walter L. Manger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Lower Mississippian rocks in the type area of North America have produced only a few scattered ammonoid cephalopods. Those specimens from southeastern Iowa and northwestern Missouri lie within the general vicinity of the designated type locality, near Kinderhook, Illinois. In this area, age relationships for strata near the Devonian-Mississippian boundary have been established largely through studies of their conodont faunas. However, some of the ammonoids from within the Kinderhook and adjacent beds are critical for long-range correlation. Although most of these ammonoid occurrences have been recorded, minor changes in correlation can be suggested by reexamination of the specimens, together with …

The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen Jan 1973

The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Western earth snakes, Virginia valeriae elegans, were known in Iowa from only three specimens and considered very rare until the present study. Intense effort to find them in the last two years produced specimens from only the lower Des Moines and Chariton River drainages. The snakes were found to be closely associated with timbered, rocky terrain near streams and to be potentially endangered where timber is permanently removed. Sampling showed two geographic areas in the Des Moines River drainage inhabited by this snake; specimens from the two areas were very similar morphologically. Iowa specimens usually lack the light vertebral stripe …

Cross-Cultural Counseling: Bridge Between Desegregation And Integration. A Study Relative To Group Counseling And Its Impact On Students And Faculty, Leander A. Brown, Richard F. Strub, Lee Rainey

Faculty Publications

For the past several years; much emphasis has been placed on open enrollment plans involving bussing that enable black and white students to attend schools together. The Laboratory School of the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls has been involved in such a program since 1968. As the project developed; the potential for very serious problems relating to racial tension and student frustration became evident. To approach these problems and to promote more openness and understanding between students from different communities and differing cultural backgrounds; cross-cultural group counseling sessions were developed. The groups during the past two years have …

Aspects Of Samuel Beckett's Humor, Keiko Adachi Jan 1973

Aspects Of Samuel Beckett's Humor, Keiko Adachi

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Samuel Beckett's works are regarded as ironical. It is because the writer has an acute awareness of the world he lives in. The story cannot be separated from the present world in his works because it is this world that he is criticizing. Beckett laughs at various absurd aspects of human life by means of innovative techniques. The purpose of this thesis is to consider the relevance of the techniques and meanings Beckett employs in order to create humor in his works. For the purpose of analysis, three big groups are set up in this paper: the first is character …

Fauna Of The Middle Little Sioux River And Comparison With Upper And Lower Regions, Clair G. Rausch, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A species list of macroscopic animals is compiled for the middle portion of the Little Sioux River, Iowa. These are tabulated along with published data from regions of the river above and below. The Little Sioux meanders throughout a valley of largely agricultural landscape; it has a relatively high silt load. Chemical differences are not great; some effects of municipal effluent are noted. The number of species is relatively constant (in the 40-60 range); numbers in the uppermost, intermittent stretches and the lowermost, channelized segment are lower (30- 40). Only about 20% of the species are ubiquitous; trends of diversity …

Statistical Analysis Of Second Order Drainage Basins On Four Pleistocene Surfaces, Richard A. Karsten Jan 1973

Statistical Analysis Of Second Order Drainage Basins On Four Pleistocene Surfaces, Richard A. Karsten

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This study statistically compares certain morphometric characteristics of second order drainage basins developed on Pleistocene glacial surfaces of different ages and compositions. The morphometry of the basins was found to be partially controlled by the type and age of unconsolidated materials into which the streams are cutting. The analysis also suggests that the Iowan Erosional Surface is closely approximating a time-independent or equilibrium condition, while the other surfaces are in comparative disequilibrium.

Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve, George E. Knudson, James Hedges Jan 1973

Decorah Ice Cave State Preserve, George E. Knudson, James Hedges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Ice Cave at Decorah, Iowa, is the largest known glaciere in North America east of the Black Hills and the subject of much international speculation during the latter half of the nineteenth century. A satisfactory theory for the formation of ice in late spring in this and other caverns was first proposed by Alois Kovarik after a series of meteorological measurements. Recent observations confirm his hypothesis. Because of its historical and geological interest and because it is the habitat of insects found nowhere else in North America, it has recently been included in the Iowa State Preserves System.

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward A Public School System, Darwin A. Winke Jan 1973

A Survey Of Attitudes Toward A Public School System, Darwin A. Winke

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to ascertain the attitude of the public toward the public school in a small Iowa school district, Gladbrook, and compare this with the public attitudes on a national survey conducted by George Gallup. This survey was conducted because public attitudes towards public schools are continually changing and because very little information about the public's attitude towards the school in Gladbrook, Iowa, was available.

Reviewing the literature was the first phase of the study. The literature in this field was divided into four areas: (1) criticism and critics of education, (2) need for change in …

A Study Of Latency Of Response In A Speech Sound Discrimination Task, Constance R. Heaton Jan 1973

A Study Of Latency Of Response In A Speech Sound Discrimination Task, Constance R. Heaton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The results of many traditional speech sound discrimination studies have been inconclusive as to the relationship between articulation skill and discrimination ability . Further , these results have allowed researchers to only speculate as to the nature of the cognitive processing involved in making a choice decision . Recently some investigators in speech pathology have measured reaction time in speech sound discrimination studies . The results suggest that reaction time can be useful in the analysis of item difficulty as related to errors in discrimination. The purpose of the present study was to compare on a "same" - "different" sound …

The specific factors under investigation were: (1) the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores; (2) the General Professional …

A Comparison Of Unisensory Versus Multisensory Presentation And The Effectiveness Of Audition In The Initial Learning Stage, Jane Doornwaard Den Herder Jan 1973

A Comparison Of Unisensory Versus Multisensory Presentation And The Effectiveness Of Audition In The Initial Learning Stage, Jane Doornwaard Den Herder

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the present investigation was to evaluate the effectiveness of audition, in unisensory presentation and in bisensory or multisensory presentations, in the initial learning stage (short term memory). The study developed as a result of experience the investigator had with multimodal presentations of material. Upon viewing the rapid gains through that approach, questions were raised with regard to the validity of the position a unisensory auditory approach has always held for speech pathologists. The review of the literature confirmed the presence of theoretical conflicts with regard to man's processing and the superiority of modes for learning. Some of …
