Trends In Iowa’S K-12 Public Education: An Analysis Of School Spending & Student Achievement [Poster], Lydia Berns-Schweingruber, Kristin Mack, Marybeth Stalp

Research in the Capitol

Prior research has examined the effect of K-12 public education spending on student academic achievement; researchers disagree about whether increasing public education spending improves academic achievement. The purpose of this study is to determine if K-12 public education spending has an effect on student academic achievement in Iowa. This project will use a secondary analysis of data from the past twenty years to examine the relationship between K-12 public education spending in Iowa and student academic achievement in Iowa. The findings of this research can be used to inform policymakers and citizens about how K-12 public education spending is affecting …

Emotions In Crisis: Consequences Of Ceremonial Refugee Camp Visits To Bhutanese Refugee Camps In Nepal, Kamryn Warren Jan 2023

Emotions In Crisis: Consequences Of Ceremonial Refugee Camp Visits To Bhutanese Refugee Camps In Nepal, Kamryn Warren

Faculty Publications

Research on refugee resettlement frequently overlooks the larger context of the experience of forced migration. As a result, the micro-level interactions between refugees and the bureaucrats who make resettlement decisions are obscured. We can better understand the socio-political dynamics between refugees and the officials deciding their resettlement cases if we approach encounters between refugees and migration officials during ceremonial visits as sites of emotional exchange. This article examines the complex socio-political emotional exchanges of power and vulnerability that underpin the refugee resettlement process through an ethnographic analysis of Bhutanese refugee camps in Nepal.

The Horror Of Darwinism: The Evolution Of The Monster In Film And Popular Culture, Ava Deitrich

Honors Program Theses

In the following pages, dear reader, you will be astounded, mystified, entertained, and intrigued. Using Stephen King’s three monstrous archetypes outlined in Danse Macabre as a guide, and the 1930’s Universal Monster Films as a starting point, I trace the roots of the Vampire, Two Faced, and Thing Without a Name through time and space. Along the evolutionary track of these archetypes, I touch on changes regarding perception and performance, in relation to social and historical shifts. I will be your guide exploring the scenery, costuming, sound design, and cinematography (to name a few) as I examine each film within …

The Contemporary Reader Of Gender And Fat Studies, Amy Erdman Farrell, Susan E. Hill

Faculty Book Gallery

The Contemporary Reader of Gender and Fat Studies is a key reference work in contemporary scholarship situated at the intersection between Gender and Fat Studies, charting the connections and tensions between these two fields.

Comprising over 20 chapters from a range of diverse and international contributors, the Reader is structured around the following key themes: theorizing gender and fat; narrating gender and fat; historicizing gender and fat; institutions and public policy; health and medicine; popular culture and media; and resistance. Local Observations Of Climate Change And Impacts On Livelihoods In Kamchatka, Russia, Victoria N. Sharakhmatova, Drew Gerkey Jan 2023

Local Observations Of Climate Change And Impacts On Livelihoods In Kamchatka, Russia, Victoria N. Sharakhmatova, Drew Gerkey

Faculty Publications

Indigenous communities throughout the Arctic are confronting unprecedented challenges arising from anthropogenic climate change. The inextricable connections between their livelihoods and social and environmental systems, combined with a rich foundation of individual and inter-generational collective experience and knowledge, make Indigenous communities particularly adept at observing changes in climate and understanding their impacts. In this chapter, we apply the protocol from the Local Indicators of Climate Change Impacts project to document observations and impacts of climate change in Khailino, an Indigenous community on the northern part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in Northeast Siberia, Russia. We use individual interviews to identify what …

How Hypermasculinity And Rape Myth Acceptance (Rma) Relate To Rape Proclivity In College Males, Cora Lynn Patterson Jan 2023

How Hypermasculinity And Rape Myth Acceptance (Rma) Relate To Rape Proclivity In College Males, Cora Lynn Patterson

Honors Program Theses

The present study examined the relationship between hypermasculinity, rape myth acceptance (RMA), and rape proclivity in male college students attending a mid-sized Midwestern university. This was done to uncover how aspects of traditional hegemonic gender socialization may create pathways for rape proclivity later in life. It looked at college males in particular because sexual assault is a major problem in college campuses and the main perpetrators are male. The study asked a sample of (n=48) males from the ages of 18-24 to answer a survey that included questions from the following measures: Hypermasculinity Scale, Illinois Rape Myth Accpetance Scale – …

Academic Work As Factory Work: A Former Blue-Collar Worker’S Observations On Class And Caste In The Academy, Kenneth Atkinson Dec 2022

Academic Work As Factory Work: A Former Blue-Collar Worker’S Observations On Class And Caste In The Academy, Kenneth Atkinson

Faculty Publications

What was it like to have come of age after the Glorious Thirty (1945-1975), an era Jack Metzger (2016; 2021a) describes as a time when the working-class bettered their lives? I had the misfortune to have worked in several Metropolitan Detroit factories during the period of decline after the Glorious Thirty. During that time, I witnessed what the journalist George Packer (2013) has called ‘the Unwinding,’ the unraveling of the social contract that has left the working class to their own devices to find success and salvation. In keeping with the tradition in working-class studies of sharing lived experienced of …

Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy Analysis Of Native American Pottery For Maple Syrup Residue [Poster], Alexis Wirtz, Joshua Sebree Ph.D., Donald Gaff Ph.D. Jul 2022

Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy Analysis Of Native American Pottery For Maple Syrup Residue [Poster], Alexis Wirtz, Joshua Sebree Ph.D., Donald Gaff Ph.D.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

The research conducted regards whether or not Native Americans understood how to create maple syrup before the influence of Europeans. Through the usage of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (GC-MS), the identity of different maple syrup organic residues within pottery can be determined.1 These organic residues tell us more about Native American history and culture. An analysis of organic residues was performed on the following types of pottery: proof of concept and weathered (an analog of the proof of concept). Organic residues were able to be identified within the proof of concept but not in the weathered pottery. This research also …

Geoarchaeology Of The 1926 Seeberger Excavation - Jackson County, Iowa, Nicolas Duffy, Chad Heinzel Ph.D., Faith Luce, William Green

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) Symposium

In 1926, Paul Nesbitt discovered around 350 shards of clay pottery in Seeberger Cave, located 6 miles north of Maquoketa, Iowa. It is unknown if these artifacts were made in Iowa, or brought over from neighboring states. For this project, Dr. Heinzel, Faith Luce and I traveled to the area to collect samples of clay and stone. We got close to the cave, but didn’t have the equipment to cross the river at the time. The area we collected our samples from is about 600 meters away from the original site. The samples will be used to characterize the site, …

Influence Of Gdp Per Capita On Birth Rates, Derek Richard Koppes Jul 2022

Influence Of Gdp Per Capita On Birth Rates, Derek Richard Koppes

Proceedings of the Jepson Undergraduate Conference on International Economics

his paper aims to explore the relationship between a country’s birth rate and GDP per capita. I use cross-sectional data for 108 countries from the CIA’s World Factbook and The World Bank. From the research, it is clear that countries with lower infant mortality rates and higher levels of female education have lower birth rates, but the impact of GDP per capita remains ambiguous. It appears the relationship between GDP per capita and birth rates may be mediated through factors such as female empowerment, better healthcare, contraception availability, and family planning resources.
