Conserving Iowa's Prehistoric Heritage, Marshall Mckusick Jan 1961

Conserving Iowa's Prehistoric Heritage, Marshall Mckusick

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A hundred years of farming and relic hunting has destroyed much of Iowa's archeological resources. An active program of research is currently underway at the State University of Iowa in order to preserve these prehistoric remains before they are entirely lost. It will require a strenuous effort to salvage enough information to piece together the ten thousand years of Iowa's past. Current research emphasis is upon publishing reports and organizing the results of previous work throughout the state. After this phase of the program is completed a series of excavations will be made in different parts of the state to …

A Review Of The Interstate Park, Wisconsin Bison Find, Harris A. Palmer Jan 1954

A Review Of The Interstate Park, Wisconsin Bison Find, Harris A. Palmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the fall of 1936, members of a C.C.C. Company engaged in excavating a ditch, uncovered the partial remains of several extinct bison in Interstate Park in Northwestern Wisconsin, about 40 miles northeast of St. Paul. The site, located in Polk County and known locally as Mountain Meadow, was a former peat bog situated in an area of drift deposited by the Grantsburg sublobe of the Keewatin ice sheet. The drift has been mapped as Mankato. The find was reported immediately to Dr. Alonzo Pond, an archeologist formerly of Beloit College, who at the time was connected with the National …

Variations In The Finger Length Of The Human Hand, Elizabeth Barnard, G. Mendoza Jan 1954

Variations In The Finger Length Of The Human Hand, Elizabeth Barnard, G. Mendoza

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Although a great deal has been written concerning the occurrence of abnormalities of the hands and fingers, relatively few studies have been made to determine variations of the normal hand. The purpose of this study is to gather some valid statistics concerning the occurrence of variations in finger length within a segment of the general population. It is hoped that this study will serve as the beginning of a valid basis upon which a study of human inheritance can be built. Because the interindividual difference in the pattern of finger length consists in the relationship between the index and ring …

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, Seventh Edition, H. E. Zabel Jan 1945

Iowa's Contribution To American Men Of Science, Seventh Edition, H. E. Zabel

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The latest directory has appeared during the war when many fields of science are marking time and when we have adopted a policy of interrupting the production of scientists. It thus becomes a landmark and an analysis of the data it presents has special significance. In this directory Iowa has not only maintained her position among the leading states in production of scientists but has slightly improved this relative standing.

Science And Society (Academy Address), Charles E. Friley Jan 1938

Science And Society (Academy Address), Charles E. Friley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Two quotations will serve as texts for this brief discourse on Science and Society: The late Dr. Edwin E. Slosson - "In our civilization the mechanical forces have forged ahead of the moral and intellectual forces. Modern man is like the Arab fisherman who liberated from the bottle genii he did not know how to control." Stuart Chase - "This is the last great adventure; the boldest, most exhilarating, most dangerous adventure that ever challenged the intelligence and spirit of mankind. From our brains have sprung a million wild horses, now running loose and almost certain sooner or later to …

Ancient Man In America -- Does His Culture Exist In The State?, William E. Sanders Jan 1938

Ancient Man In America -- Does His Culture Exist In The State?, William E. Sanders

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Where an ancient people construct lodges, build houses, establish shrines, rear temples, bury their dead, create art or preserve a tradition, it is often possible by an analysis of these elements to reconstruct an outline of their culture and form some opinion of when it prevailed. When, however, one undertakes to rewrite the history of a long since vanished savage people such as the nomadic hunters of America undoubtedly were, the student is forced to rely upon the few preserved portions of his skeletal remains and the meager assemblage of his small store of utilitarian implements which have been recovered …
