The Mitochondrial Cytochrome Oxidase Subunit I Gene Occurs On A Minichromosome With Extensive Heteroplasmy In Two Species Of Chewing Lice, Geomydoecus Aurei And Thomomydoecus Minor, Lucas L. Pietan, Theresa A. Spradling, James W. Demastes Sep 2016

Demastes

Faculty Work

In animals, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) typically occurs as a single circular chromosome with 13 protein-coding genes and 22 tRNA genes. The various species of lice examined previously, however, have shown mitochondrial genome rearrangements with a range of chromosome sizes and numbers. Our research demonstrates that the mitochondrial genomes of two species of chewing lice found on pocket gophers, Geomydoecus aurei and Thomomydoecus minor, are fragmented with the 1,536 base-pair (bp) cytochrome-oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene occurring as the only protein-coding gene on a 1,916–1,964 bp minicircular chromosome in the two species, respectively. The cox1 gene of T. …

Students Staging Resistance: Pedagogy/Performance/Praxis, Patrick Santoro, Uriah Berryhill, Lois Nemeth, Rebecca Townsend, Deirdre Webb

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

This essay archives and reimagines a collaborative student performance—inJUSTICE—developed as part of a performance and social change course. Working within the framework of critical pedagogy, the intents of this piece are several: to offer strategies for teaching a course on performing resistance and mentoring students in the development of original work; to provide insight into how students, primarily at the undergraduate level, process performance in the context of social change, as well as apply course concepts and practices in their own performance work; and to affirm a body-centered, performative pedagogy in the classroom. Also included is a video of the …

Imaginative Acts Of Resistance: Dramatic Storytelling In An Elementary School Classroom, Shannon K. Mcmanimon Aug 2016

Imaginative Acts Of Resistance: Dramatic Storytelling In An Elementary School Classroom, Shannon K. Mcmanimon

Spect-actor: A Journal of Pedagogy & Theatre of the Oppressed

This critical ethnographic project draws upon literature on imagination, critical literacy, and theatre to explore a sixth-grade class’s participation in a critical literacy and creative drama program. Through examples from the storytelling practices of the Neighborhood Bridges program, I outline how students and teachers (including a teaching artist) imagined, co-created, and revised storylines in their classroom; this collaboration provides an alternative to the common narrative of the constrained urban public school classroom. The resulting imaginative acts of resistance: 1) encourage and empower urban elementary students to enact relevant, collaborative community in their classrooms; 2) engage meaningful—not just functional—literacies; 3) ask …

Minority Report: Re-Reading Gilgamesh After Levinas, Francis Dominic Degnin Jul 2016

Minority Report: Re-Reading Gilgamesh After Levinas, Francis Dominic Degnin

Faculty Work

The Epic of Gilgamesh attempts to answer the question of how, given the finality of death, one might find meaning and happiness in life. Many commentators argue that the text provides two separate, although ultimately unsatisfactory, alternatives. What these commentators appear to miss, however, is the possibility that these two solutions may not be separate. Using Levinas’s distinction between “need” and “desire,” I argue that, by the end of the Epic, they may in fact be synthesized into a single solution, one that suggests the priority of an affective moral grounding as prior to and more fundamental than intellectual …

Literacy And Arts-Integrated Science Lessons Engage Urban Elementary Students In Exploring Environmental Issues, Audrey C. Rule, Phyllis Gray, Caroline Elser, Julie Leigh Klein

Curriculum & Instruction Faculty Publications

This descriptive case study examined student attitudes, writing skills and content knowledge of urban fourth and fifth graders (6 males, 9 female) during a six-week literacy, thinking skill, and art-integrated environmental science unit. Pre- and post- test questions were used to address knowledge of environmental problems and student environmental actions. Students expressed knowledge and suggestions for positive action of youth through four essays throughout the unit, the final essay being accompanied by a pop-up construction. Writings showed steady growth in number of words, sentences, suggested environmental actions for youth, and instances of discussing consequences and sequels of actions. Students were …

Nakba Day: The Ephemera Of Martyrdom, Philip Hopper Mar 2016

Nakba Day: The Ephemera Of Martyrdom, Philip Hopper

UNIversitas: Journal of Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity

Nakba Commemoration Day for Palestinians is the counterpart of Israel’s Independence Day, which takes place one week earlier. These days respectively mark the forcible expulsions of Palestinians from the nascent state of Israel and the declaration of statehood by Israel. One tribe’s independence is another tribe’s disaster. One person’s freedom fighter is another person’s terrorist. Parallel yet inverted narratives are everywhere in history and the present, from Manifest Destiny to the Ukraine, the Sudan, Northern Ireland and elsewhere today.

Fogging Practices Of Iowa Counties For Mosquito Abatement, Alex Jay Davey Jan 2016

Fogging Practices Of Iowa Counties For Mosquito Abatement, Alex Jay Davey

Graduate Research Papers

Global warming has been associated with an increase of mosquito-borne diseases. Mosquito-borne diseases currently have no prescription remedies. The counties across the state of Iowa will increase their fogging procedure, to supplement the increase in mosquitos and mosquito-borne diseases. This study examined which chemicals each county uses for mosquito abatement, the patterns and frequency of spraying, and what patterns of human exposure may be occurring. The county auditor was identified and recruited via email. The county auditors across the state forwarded the email message to the Environmental Health Director, in each county. At county level, they are not in control …
