Documentary Material Relating To The History Of Iowa [V.3], Benjamin F. Shambaugh
Iowa Book Gallery
Volume 3 in a 3-volume set, published between 1897 and 1901 by the State Historical Society of Iowa, covers a variety of historical subjects including the acquisition and establishment of the Territory of Iowa, the admission of Iowa into the Union, and the history of local political organization within Iowa. The General Introduction in volume one states, "Scattered through various books and publications... this material has been practically inaccessible to the general body of students. It is to obviate these difficulties, and to facilitate the adoption of scientific methods of study, that the documentary material contemplated in the title is …
The Sanitary Analyses Of Some Iowa Deep Well Waters, J. B. Weems
The Sanitary Analyses Of Some Iowa Deep Well Waters, J. B. Weems
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the investigation of deep well waters the interest in many cases has been limited to the mineral substances, and little attention given to the sanitary analysis. This is a natural result when it is realized that these waters contain large amounts of solids and the possibility of contamination by sewage or other products is very slight indeed. In connection with the work of the Department of Agricultural Chemistry of the Agricultural College, analyses of a number of samples of water from the deep wells of the state have been made and the results brought together in hope that they …
A Large Red Hydra, Maurice Ricker
A Large Red Hydra, Maurice Ricker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the summer session of the University of Montana Biological Station, we found what is believed to be a new hydra. It was taken in large numbers from Echo Lake, Flathead County, Montana. It has never been found in any of the other numerous streams or lakes in this vicinity, and so far as is known no other hydra has ever been collected in the state.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The fifteenth annual session of the Iowa Academy of Sciences was held in the rooms of the Iowa Geological Survey at the capitol building in Des Moines, December 26th and 27th, 1900. In the business sessions the following matters of general interest were passed upon.
Presidential Address - The Social Service Of Science, William Harmon Norton
Presidential Address - The Social Service Of Science, William Harmon Norton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The extent to which society may be considered as an organism is still, I understand, a matter of controversy with sociologists. But without awaiting its adjudication, we may surely make use of a simile as ancient as that of the Apostle who spoke of individual Christians as members of one body, or as that of the wise old Roman, who taught the mutinous plebs the parable of the body politic, all of whose members were nourished by the well-fed patrician belly, and consider together this evening the social function of science in the body social.
Pure Food Laws, C. O. Bates
Pure Food Laws, C. O. Bates
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The demand for cheap goods and the intense strain produced by commercial competition has induced many dealers and manufacturers to adulterate their products. This practice enables them to satisfy the buyer and outwit their competitors, not to speak of the immediate financial advantage.
A Combination Of Chromic Acid, Acetic Acid And Formalin As A Fixative For Animal Tissues, H. W. Norris
A Combination Of Chromic Acid, Acetic Acid And Formalin As A Fixative For Animal Tissues, H. W. Norris
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
That many of the fixing reagents in common use in the preparation of tissues for histological study are poorly adapted to the fixation of the ova and embryos of Amphibians, is evident to anyone who gives more than casual attention to the matter. The large amount of yolk present in the cells of the Amphibian embryo makes completely uniform fixation with some reagents impossible, and then, too, the disintegrating effect of many fixing fluids upon the yoke granules makes the result very unsatisfactory. A fluid that gives good fixation is likely to interfere with subsequent staining, as witness most of …
The Morphology And Function Of The Amphibian Ear, H. W. Norris
The Morphology And Function Of The Amphibian Ear, H. W. Norris
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the struggle for existence as individuals the Amphibians, or Batrachians, seem to have a minor position. For the most part of insignificant size, with poorly protected bodies, and with retiring and inoffensive habits, these forms which we know as toads, frogs and salamanders, seem to be poorly adapted to maintain their species. From what the paleontologist tells us, we may well believe that the Amphibians as a class arose, flourished, and then declined to their present insignificant proportions long ago. It is because of the relationships of this group that it is of profound interest to science. It forms …
Notes On The Bacteriological Analysis Of Water, L. H. Pammel
Notes On The Bacteriological Analysis Of Water, L. H. Pammel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The recent epidemic of typhoid fever at the college is of interest to us and especially the methods now in vogue with reference to the examination of water for various organisms. During the recent epidemic and previously the well waters in the vicinity of Ames as well as the college water supply were examined at various times. An examination has also been made of water coming from wells of the parties who have furnished milk to the college. It should be stated here that this report is not completed owing to the fact that some of the species have not …
The Thistles Of Iowa, With Notes On A Few Other Species, L. H. Pammel
The Thistles Of Iowa, With Notes On A Few Other Species, L. H. Pammel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
I have for some years been interested in a study of our thistles. During my study in St. Louis I had occasion to examine the rich collections of the Gray Herbarium, Harvard University, as well as that of the Engelmann Herbarium and the Missouri Botanical Garden, besides a considerable collection in the Parry and I. S. C. Herbaria. I should not attempt the publication of only a partial paper on thistles, but it may be some time before I shall be able to get together the manuscript lost in the fire. With this apology I present these notes.

A Chemical Study Of Butter Increasers, J. B. Weems, F. W. Bouska
A Chemical Study Of Butter Increasers, J. B. Weems, F. W. Bouska
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In connection with the investigations in the chemical laboratory of the experiment station of problems connected with the amount of water present in butter, analyses were made of two samples of butter which appeared to contain a very large amount of water. The water present was apparently in large proportions and this condition gave a reason for the request for the analyses. In the attempt to mix the product in order to get an average sample it was found that the water readily separated from the other constituents, and on analysis of the product the following results were obtained.
The Distribution Of Forest Trees In Iowa, B. Shimek
The Distribution Of Forest Trees In Iowa, B. Shimek
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The discussion of the origin of our prairies, and of the distribution of our native forest trees, is as old as our knowledge of the central northwest. The earlier discussions were based on a knowledge of conditions as they existed when the white man first appeared in this section, and, though some of them are crude, and based upon insufficient observation, they fortunately give us at least a partial record of those conditions.

Native Crab Apples And Their Cultivated Varieties, John Craig, H. Harold Hume
Native Crab Apples And Their Cultivated Varieties, John Craig, H. Harold Hume
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Indigenous to North America there are several species of Pyrus belong to the Malus or apple group. Sargent, in his Silva of North America, gives three species and one variety. These are P. rivularis Doug., found west of the Rocky Mountains from northern California to Alaska; P. angustifolia Ait., ranging from Pennsylvania to Tennessee and Florida; P. coronaria L., in the region from New York to Michigan, southward and westward to Missouri and Kansas; P. coronaria var. Iowensis, Wood, confined to the prairie states. In the American Garden, XII, 473, 1891, Professor Bailey raised var. Iowensis to specific rank, basing …
Presidential Address - Some Features Of The Science Of A Hundred Years Ago, W. S. Hendrixson
Presidential Address - Some Features Of The Science Of A Hundred Years Ago, W. S. Hendrixson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the past three or four years the popular magazines have contained numerous articles on the progress of science in the nineteenth century. These papers were written for popular information and they deal with only a few great discoveries with which all men of science are familiar. It occurred to the writer that for the entertainment and information of the man of science, who is acquainted with the main facts and theories of every science as it is to-day, and who, though not acquainted with its minute details, is at least aware of its great mass of facts, its intricate …
The New School Of Animal Psychology, C. C. Nutting
The New School Of Animal Psychology, C. C. Nutting
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The title of this paper is in one sense a misnomer, from the fact that the prophets of the new school are inclined to deny any real psychology to animals. According to Morgan, mind is the wave of consciousness in its continuity. Thorndyke says that "The mental stream is not continuous in animals," If this is true, animals cannot be said to have minds, and hence animal psychology cannot exist.
Notes On The Hemiptera Of Northwestern Iowa, Herbert Osborn
Notes On The Hemiptera Of Northwestern Iowa, Herbert Osborn
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
From the difference in geological and floral conditions of the northwestern part of the state, we might naturally expect a somewhat interesting insect fauna. Occasional specimens of species, rare or unknown in the central part of the state, have come to hand and, especially in Hemiptera, have served to strengthen a desire to investigate more thoroughly the fauna in this order. Many of these additions have been due to the successful collecting of Mr. E. D. Ball, whose faithful, persistent efforts it is a pleasure to acknowledge here. During the summer of 1897 I spent a couple of weeks in …
Additions To The Bibliography Of North American Lichens, Bruce Fink
Additions To The Bibliography Of North American Lichens, Bruce Fink
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
While reading in the botanical library of the University of Minnesota during the summer of 1896, I noticed a number of titles which had escaped Mr. W. W. Calkins, while preparing his bibliography of North American lichens. These I added to some before noted in my own library and began a careful search which extended through the summers of 1897 and 1898; examining also the general library of the University of Minnesota.

Presidential Address - The Academy And The People, T. H. Macbride
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Again, by the decrees of fortune, I appear before you as your presiding officer to extend to you the felicitations of the season and to congratulate you on this, our annual reunion. It is a fortunate thing that so many men can thus come up each from his own field, here to meet in friendly converse with his friend of like pursuit, of like employment, each to derive encouragement and stimulus for further and happier endeavor. This evening there are many reasons for special congratulation. Our roll of fellows and members is longer than ever before; our program shows a …

The Color Of Deep-Sea Animals, C. C. Nutting
The Color Of Deep-Sea Animals, C. C. Nutting
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purpose of this paper is to explain the phenomena of bright colors among marine animals living in the sea beyond the depths to which sunlight can be supposed to penetrate to such an extent as to render bright colors visible. Although there are doubtless actinic effects of sunlight at considerable depths, we are safe, I think, in saying that colors cannot be clearly distinguished at a depth greater than 100 fathoms. Photographic experiments show that the "extreme limit of effect of the sun's rays on sensitive plates is at a depth of 250 metres,” or less than 125 fathoms. …
Preliminary Report On The Diatoms Of Iowa, P. C. Myers
Preliminary Report On The Diatoms Of Iowa, P. C. Myers
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Within the last two years the author has often had occasion to congratulate himself for having acted on a suggestion from Prof. B. Shimek, of the State University of Iowa, to take up the study of a group of organisms which hitherto had, from the botanists of this state, received but scant attention.
The August Cloud-Burst In Des Moines County, Maurice Ricker
The August Cloud-Burst In Des Moines County, Maurice Ricker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It is my purpose to give merely a statement of facts concerning the storm which deluged Des Moines County the morning of August 16, 1898. I believe it was the heaviest rainfall ever noted in the United States for the period of its duration, and while the area covered was not large, it proved to be very destructive. No doubt there have been storms in which the precipitation was as heavy, where no one saw fit to chronicle the event. Many great disasters, as the Johnstown Flood, with a greater area and less precipitation, have become historic, because of loss …
The Distribution Of Loess Fossils, B. Shimek
The Distribution Of Loess Fossils, B. Shimek
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It has perhaps been noted that the loess mollusks thus far reported in the literature of the subject are, for the most part, from localities in close proximity to larger streams. This fact may have suggested the thought to those unfamiliar with the modern habits and present distribution of these mollusks that the adjacent streams had in some way something to do with the entombing of the shells now found in the loess. That the loess is most richly fossiliferous near streams is generally, though not always, true. The abundance of fossils is a decidedly variable quantity. There are exposures …
New Light On The Drift In South Dakota, J. E. Todd
New Light On The Drift In South Dakota, J. E. Todd
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Hitherto, the writer's study of the drift of South Dakota has led him to consider it to belong mainly, if not entirely, to the Wisconsin epoch. The reasons briefly stated are as follows.
Some Physical Aspects Of General Geological Correlation, Charles R. Keyes
Some Physical Aspects Of General Geological Correlation, Charles R. Keyes
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The main object of the present communication is to formulate, briefly, certain results which have been obtained in the course of recent attempts to parallel some of the geological terranes in the Mississippi Valley. The suggestions they offer appear to have a much more than local bearing, and to affect the stratigraphy of the entire region. They also have an important influence upon the whole problem of general correlation and, perhaps, also, even upon our present system of geological classification.
