The Content Of The Beginning Course In Psychology, Earle E. Emme

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Gordon W. Allport (1) in his recent volume on "Personality" makes it very clear that psychologists are at work upon many factors, conditions, and uniformity of events related' to individuals; so that sometimes "science regards the individual as a mere bothersome accident" and is usually at work upon a "somewhat shadowy portrait." He goes on to point out that such psychological studies are not very satisfying when compared with the "living individual models" from which the data is taken. Thoroughgoing psychology cannot omit the individual at work with his intellect, motives, emotions, and his desires for personal security and efficiency.

Ancient Man In America -- Does His Culture Exist In The State?, William E. Sanders Jan 1938

Ancient Man In America -- Does His Culture Exist In The State?, William E. Sanders

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Where an ancient people construct lodges, build houses, establish shrines, rear temples, bury their dead, create art or preserve a tradition, it is often possible by an analysis of these elements to reconstruct an outline of their culture and form some opinion of when it prevailed. When, however, one undertakes to rewrite the history of a long since vanished savage people such as the nomadic hunters of America undoubtedly were, the student is forced to rely upon the few preserved portions of his skeletal remains and the meager assemblage of his small store of utilitarian implements which have been recovered …

Some Features In The Life History Of Amphicarpa Bracteata (L.) Fernald (Hog Peanut), John N. Martin Jan 1938

Some Features In The Life History Of Amphicarpa Bracteata (L.) Fernald (Hog Peanut), John N. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Amphicarpa bracteata and the very similar species, Amphicarpa comosa (L.) G. Don are two interesting cleistogenes of the legume family. The two species are similar in habitat, preferring rich woods and thickets but growing in the open, and are rather generally distributed throughout most of the state’s east of the Rocky Mountains. They have slender twining stems ranging from one to six or more feet in length that trail over the ground or use bushes, weeds, or whatever may be in their reach for a support (text figure 1). Seven species, two in America and five in …

Blood Sugar Changes In The Rat Produced By Salt Of Beryllium, Magnesium, And Zinc With Some Observations On Hemoglobin And Red Blood Corpuscles, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson Jan 1938

Blood Sugar Changes In The Rat Produced By Salt Of Beryllium, Magnesium, And Zinc With Some Observations On Hemoglobin And Red Blood Corpuscles, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This report is the direct result of research in this laboratory upon the physiological role of several metallic salts. The influence of magnesium salts upon the blood sugar content of rabbits was studied by Underhill (1) who found that hyperglycemia subsequent to magnesium injection was most evident during the period of anesthesia. Meltzer and Auer (2) had shown that an animal anesthetized by an injection of magnesium sulfate could be quickly restored to normal by an intravenous injection of calcium chloride. Underhill (1) showed that the hyperglycemia produced in rabbits anesthetized with magnesium salt was reduced to normal in two …

An Analysis Of The Implications And Reference Of The Word "Intelligence", C. E. Tuthill Jan 1938

An Analysis Of The Implications And Reference Of The Word "Intelligence", C. E. Tuthill

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The meaning of the word "intelligence'' is seen to vary from one context to another. The term "multiordinal" has been applied by Korzybski to refer to words the meaning of which is indicated by the context and depends upon the order of abstraction involved. That the meaning of the word "intelligence" is many-valued or multiordinal may be seen from some of the following quotations taken from the writings of leading men in the field.

Progress Report On A Survey Of The Spiders Of Iowa, Karl A. Stiles, Beulah Detwiler Jan 1938

Progress Report On A Survey Of The Spiders Of Iowa, Karl A. Stiles, Beulah Detwiler

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The senior author began a study of Iowa spiders in the fall of 1936 when a black widow (Latrodectus mactaus texanus) was collected in Linn County. This was reported in Science (Stiles, 1937) and constituted the first official record of the black widow for Iowa. This record was of special interest because Minnesota and Iowa had been listed as the only states from which this spider had not been reported officially. It was discovered at that time that the spider was one of Iowa's most neglected animals. Only three papers on our spider fauna have been reported to the Iowa …

Grasshoppers In Iowa In 1936, Carl J. Drake, George C. Decker Jan 1937

Grasshoppers In Iowa In 1936, Carl J. Drake, George C. Decker

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Iowa and other mid-western states suffered tremendous grasshopper losses in 1936. Although the heaviest damage occurred in the western and southern counties, the infestation extended across the southern half of the state and up along the Mississippi River into a number of northeastern counties. In fact, more or less damage occurred in all save about 25 counties located in the northcentral part of the state. Over 21,000 farmers broadcast 200 or more pounds of poison bait on their respective farms, and a total of 4,463 tons of dry bait materials were wet and mixed at 52 county mixing stations.

Some Molds Associated With Meat In Cold Storage Lockers In Iowa, G. Semeniuk, W. C. Ball Jan 1937

Some Molds Associated With Meat In Cold Storage Lockers In Iowa, G. Semeniuk, W. C. Ball

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the past few years throughout the United States cold storage locker plants have been introduced as a new industry, offering their services to the public as storage depots for perishable foods, particularly meats. The wide-spread popularity of this industry is attested by the existence of approximately two thousand cold storage locker plants in the United States of which two hundred are located in Iowa. Over one hundred of these plants in Iowa were introduced during the past year, and there is every indication that their number win continue to increase.

The Banana Floatingheart (Nymphoides Aquaticum), Henry S. Conard Jan 1937

The Banana Floatingheart (Nymphoides Aquaticum), Henry S. Conard

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

It is well known that Nymphaea mexicana Zucc. and Nymphoides aquaticum (Walt.) produce brood bodies, hibernating bodies or organs of vegetative propagation. In both species the bodies consist of a cluster of fleshy roots more or less resembling a "hand" or a small bunch of bananas.

The Pocket Mouse (Perognathus Flavescens): A New Species In Iowa, Emmett B. Polderboer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The pocket mouse, as near as we can determine, has not been reported as occurring within the state. The purpose of this report, therefore, is to give a description of the species Perognathus ftavescens obtained in Black Hawk County, Iowa, during the summer of 1936.

Some Methods Of Teaching Taxonomy, H. E. Jaques Jan 1937

Some Methods Of Teaching Taxonomy, H. E. Jaques

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

When viewed from the aspect of its relationship to other biological fields of either a pure or applied science nature or when taken only as associated with an avocational program, an understanding of the problems of classification of plants and animals is highly essential. Specialists in other fields of biology need not be expert taxonomists but the ability to readily handle some simple classification problems is very desirable and may spare one some awkward embarrassments. Collecting and classifying some group of nature's highly interesting creations appeals so strongly to many that some instruction in handling classification keys may well be …

The Effect Of Training Upon The Handedness Preference Of The Rat In An Eating Activity, Robert L. Milisen Jan 1937

The Effect Of Training Upon The Handedness Preference Of The Rat In An Eating Activity, Robert L. Milisen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The problem of sidedness has become important in the last few years due to the relationship which may exist between it and certain disabilities such as stuttering, reading and spelling. Although much work has been done with sidedness of human subjects, many factors could not be studied or controlled; therefore, rats were used in this study.

Growth, Reproduction, And Blood Changes Produced In Rats By Means Of Zinc Carbonate, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson Jan 1937

Growth, Reproduction, And Blood Changes Produced In Rats By Means Of Zinc Carbonate, W. R. Sutton, Victor E. Nelson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The literature bearing on the toxicity of zinc to the animal body is very confused. D'Amore, Falcone, and Marmaldi (1) fed zinc oxide to dogs; they called attention to the loss of appetite and the weak condition of their animals with the further observation that the blood color and the number of red cells were greatly diminished. During the last days of the poisoning, the white cells markedly increased. Urine of the dogs was diminished in volume and contained casts and albumin. Lehmann (2) fed zinc carbonate to dogs for eleven months with no evidence of poisoning. Batchelor, Fehnel, Thompson, …

Quantitative Measurement Of Some Psychological And Phonetic Factors Affecting The Incidence Of Stuttering, Spencer F. Brown Jan 1937

Quantitative Measurement Of Some Psychological And Phonetic Factors Affecting The Incidence Of Stuttering, Spencer F. Brown

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A study reported in the Quarterly Journal of Speech (November, 1935) showed the existence of a phonetic factor of difficulty affecting the occurrence of stuttering spasms. Further analysis of the data on which the previous work was based has revealed a grammatical factor of difficulty. This is more consistent, but does not seem to be as important as the phonetic factor.

Beaver In Iowa, W. W. Aitken Jan 1937

Beaver In Iowa, W. W. Aitken

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Beaver are generally assumed to have become extinct in Iowa, therefore the average Iowa citizen is startled when newspapers announce in headline type beaver activity in some apparently remote district of the state. These largest of all American rodents are not at all uncommon today in parts of the state. In fact, the increase of beaver population the past four years has now reached a point where their management presents a definite conservation problem.
