The Influence Of Growth Rate Upon Brain Development In Rana Pipiens Tadpoles., Jerry J. Kollros, Stephanie Henoch Barch
The Influence Of Growth Rate Upon Brain Development In Rana Pipiens Tadpoles., Jerry J. Kollros, Stephanie Henoch Barch
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In the course of studies on the development of the optic tectum in the frog (Kollros, '53), considerable variation in the cell populations of the outermost tectal layers was noted, with some involvement of the deeper layers as well. The greatest differences appeared toward the end of metamorphosis, with cell counts in some animals being 30 to 40 per cent less than those in others. The animals with low counts were generally smaller than those with the high counts, and frequently they grew more slowly. In order to study the variations in tectal development which might be associated with variations …
Response Strength As A Function Of Delay Of Reward And Physical Confinement, Peter Lynn Carlton
Response Strength As A Function Of Delay Of Reward And Physical Confinement, Peter Lynn Carlton
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A number of recent investigations have been concerned with the study of the effect of varying the length of delay of reward and of shifting this delay period on level of performance in instrumental conditioning (1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11) . In general, these studies have found level of performance at the asymptote to be some inverse function of the time of delay and that the length of delay that will still provide for learning appears to be a function of the effectiveness of secondary reinforcement in the situation (1, 6, 7, 10).
Problems Of Origin And Early Development Of The Vertebrates: Skeletal Tissues, George M. Robertson
Problems Of Origin And Early Development Of The Vertebrates: Skeletal Tissues, George M. Robertson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
For the past thirty years one of my major interests has been Organic Evolution, and coupled with that for most of this period has been Vertebrate Paleontology, with special emphasis on the earliest vertebrates. Taxonomic study of these primitive forms has been bound to lead to phylogenetic speculation, and of recent years that aspect has dominated my interest. At the same time I have become increasingly concerned with problems of the mode or modes of occurrence of evolutionary changes. Merging these two has given rise to some serious problems.
Notes On Tetracotyles Within Echinostome Rediae From The Okoboji Region, Martin J. Ulmer
Notes On Tetracotyles Within Echinostome Rediae From The Okoboji Region, Martin J. Ulmer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The great abundance of snails parasitized by larval stages of digenetic trematodes in the Okoboji region in northwest Iowa makes this area a particularly interesting one for helminthological investigations. Lymnaea reflexa (Say), an aquatic snail found in large numbers in ponds near the Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji, show a remarkably high percentage of infection with strigeid metacercariae of the tetracotyle type. In some areas, collections of several hundred snails showed upon examination that 100 per cent were parasitized with developing and fully formed tetracotyles. These metacercariae, which are usually present in great number within the hermaphroditic gland of …
Food Of The Freshwater Drum, Aplodinotis Grunniens Rafinesque, In Four Dickinson County, Iowa, Lakes, Tom Moen
Food Of The Freshwater Drum, Aplodinotis Grunniens Rafinesque, In Four Dickinson County, Iowa, Lakes, Tom Moen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The freshwater drum, Aplodinotus grunniens Rafinesque, better known throughout most of the midwest as sheepshead, is the only member of the family Sciaenidae in the midwest. This species has been the object of many arguments among fishermen as to whether it should be classed as a game fish or relegated to the rough fish group (carp, buffalo, gar -and etc.). Although sheepshead often take both artificial and live bait, it is the present policy of the fisheries management section of the Iowa Conservation Commission that the competitive aspects of this species outweigh any gain in food or sport that might …
Observations Of The Enteric Protozoa Of Rana Pipiens During Larval Development And Metamorphosis, William Henry Mcarthur
Observations Of The Enteric Protozoa Of Rana Pipiens During Larval Development And Metamorphosis, William Henry Mcarthur
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The existence of protozoa in the intestine of frogs has been known since the observations of van Leeuvenhoek, 1683. Nearly two centuries elapsed before any considerable advance in the study of intestinal protozoa was made. The observations of Dobell ( 1909) initiated the modem phase in the investigation of the enteric protozoa of amphibia. In this work, on the fauna of frogs and toads, many of the species now recognized were described.

B-Vitamins Stimulatory To Cellulose Digestion By Washed Suspensions Of Rumen Microorganisms, Glen Hall, Edmund W. Cheng, Wise Burroughs
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Numerous investigators have reported the presence of unidentified factors in certain feedstuffs and other materials which stimulate rumen microbial activity in vitro (1, 2, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10). Recently Ruf et al. (11) showed that extracts of yeast, cow manure and several feedstuffs stimulated the rate of cellulose digestion when they were added to a purified medium used for the in vitro culture of rumen microorganisms. Since many of the sources of the unidentified factors are known to contain several vitamins of the B group, it appears desirable to study the influence of certain of these vitamins on the …

The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram
The Museum At The Iowa State Normal School (State College Of Iowa), Fred Cram
Library Documents & Reports (entire collection)
So far as a careful scanning of the catalogs of ISNS reveals, the first mention of a museum occurs in the 1896 issue, where on page 45 we find that “Natural Science has its museum well stocked with minerals, rocks, fossils dried and alcoholic specimens.”
While our Museum has usually been referred to as one of natural history, there has accumulated over the years a miscellaneous collection of other materials. There are items of historical value, such as swords, guns, and uniforms. There are old documents, coins, and curiosities. There are boats and other items from river and sea. Industrial …

Evaluation Of Techniques In Estimating A Mearns Cottontail Population, Charles W. Crunden, George O. Hendrickson
Evaluation Of Techniques In Estimating A Mearns Cottontail Population, Charles W. Crunden, George O. Hendrickson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Field research to obtain information on the productivity and population of Mearns cottontail was conducted from June 17 to December 4, 1953. The study area of about 80 acres was part of a dairy farm, Section 13, Woodland Township, Decatur County, a central southernmost cm~nty of Iowa. The plant cover consisted of alfalfa 30 acres, oats 20, pastured grasses 10 acres, fallow forbs 10 acres, and trees and shrubs, chiefly along fence lines and gullies, 10 acres. The precipitation of 13 inches during the period, little more than one-half the normal, reduced the plant growth considerably. Reduction in cover through …
French Zoology In The Twentieth Century, Louis Gallien
French Zoology In The Twentieth Century, Louis Gallien
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It is a great privilege for me to be called upon to give this lecture at your meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science. I am most thankful for the invitation and cordial reception which you have tendered tome. I should like to present to you a short aperçu of the development of Zoology in France, during the first part of the present century. It seems to me that such a review must not only treat of the men, institutions and works which arose during this period in zoology, but should also, and more generally, show how the major events …
Toxicity Of Seven Different Insecticides To Rainbow Trout Salmo Gairdnerii (Richardson), James Mayhew
Toxicity Of Seven Different Insecticides To Rainbow Trout Salmo Gairdnerii (Richardson), James Mayhew
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Today, with the development and use of an increasing number of more potent insecticides there exists a real and potential danger to many forms of wildlife. DDT was the first of these insecticides to be used and it is still very popular and widely applied. Its widespread use on agricultural lands, forests, marshes, and water quickly aroused the interest of persons and agencies who were concerned with the ways in which it might directly or indirectly affect animals other than insects. Most of the studies have been concerned with the toxicity of DDT, but within recent years a number of …
Observations On Eimeria From Ambystoma Tigrinum, With Descriptions Of Four New Species, L. H. Saxe
Observations On Eimeria From Ambystoma Tigrinum, With Descriptions Of Four New Species, L. H. Saxe
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There appear to be only three records of coccidia of the genus Ezmeria from North American Amphibia. Rankin (1937) reported Eimeria ranarum from Ambystoma opacum. Walton (personal communication) says that his record (1942) of Eimeria from Ambystoma is based upon a letter from Dr. Harold Kirby who stated that he had seen E. ranarum from A. opacum. Doran (1953) reported Eimeria grobbeni from Taricha torosa. The author, on several occasions, has noted the presence of coccidian oocysts in the rectal contents of salamanders. Four species of Eimeria have been recognized in material from Ambystoma tigrinum (Green) and will be described …

An Analysis Of The Variation Of Food Contents In The Stomach Of The Common Perch (Perca Flavescens), Carl Lewis Heller
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
This study was conducted primarily to determine the variation in the amount of food ingested by the common perch according to the time of day; secondarily, to determine any variation in the types of organisms ingested as food . In the teaching of the biological sciences, the teacher strives to enlighten and stimulate the students toward a better understanding of the living world. This study shows promise of furthering information about a common organism and should be of interest to the teacher and students.

Critical Analyses Of Selected Works Of American Historical Fiction, 1746-1865, For Teaching Purposes In The Seventh Grade, Lois Allene Bergman
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Critical analyses of historical fiction for teaching purposes of the type projected in this study have not been available. Some brief bibliographies of historical fiction were available. However they were inadequate for the purpose underlying this study. There has been a need for more extensive analyses of historical fiction. Many teachers have not had training in selecting books of this type. Consequently, they have had to rely upon descriptions too brief to be adequate tor their needs. Hannah Logasa,1 listed Barney's Barges as a story about the American Navy in the War of 1812. Many things happened to that Navy …

Effect Of Massive Dosage Of Vitamin A On The Blood Plasma Fat And Vitamin A Levels In Dairy Calves, R. S. Allen, N. L. Jacobson
Effect Of Massive Dosage Of Vitamin A On The Blood Plasma Fat And Vitamin A Levels In Dairy Calves, R. S. Allen, N. L. Jacobson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although the significance of vitamin A in the nutrition of the young dairy calf is well recognized, the effects of ingestion of large amounts of this vitamin, particularly as related to other blood constituents, have received comparatively little attention. Investigations with other species suggest that there may be a relationship between vitamin A intake and the level of the serum lipids. Josephs (1942) reported that the administration of large amounts of vitamin A increased total serum lipids in both normal and vitamin A-deficient rats, the effect being much greater and persisting longer in the latter. Similar results were observed in …
Food Of The Bigmouth Buffalo, Lctiobus Cyprinellus (Valenciennes), In Northwest Iowa Lakes, Tom Moen
Food Of The Bigmouth Buffalo, Lctiobus Cyprinellus (Valenciennes), In Northwest Iowa Lakes, Tom Moen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Three species of the genus Ictiobus occur m Iowa waters; the bigmouth buffalo, Ictiobus cyprinellus, the black buffalo, Ictiobus niger, and the smallmouth buffalo, lctiobus bubalus. Of these three species the bigmouth buffalo is the most common in the Northwest Iowa lakes, the remaining two species are comparatively rare. Bigmouth buffalo (hereafter referred to as buffalo) have been removed from Iowa lakes as undesirable and obnoxious fish since the early nineteen hundreds. Harlan and Speaker (1951) state that nearly a half million pounds are removed from the inland waters of the state each year by the State …
Precociously Developed Brachylaimid Metacercariae Within Sporocysts, Martin J. Ulmer
Precociously Developed Brachylaimid Metacercariae Within Sporocysts, Martin J. Ulmer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The occurrence of precociously developed metacercariae among digenetic trematodes has been noted by numerous investigators both here and abroad. Included in the literature are references to species representing more than a dozen families which have been recorded as exhibiting this phenomenon. Among many groups it manifests itself in progenetic development, i. e., the attainment of sexual maturity by metacercariae (or cercariae occasionally) while still within the first intermediate host, with resultant egg production, and at times the appearance of viable miracidia within such metacercariae. Buttner (1950, 1951) in an intensive study of progenesis among digenetic trematodes provides experimental evidence indicating …
Autumnal Decimation Of Mearns Cottontail, Decatur County, Iowa, 1952, Paul D. Kline, George O. Hendrickson
Autumnal Decimation Of Mearns Cottontail, Decatur County, Iowa, 1952, Paul D. Kline, George O. Hendrickson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In summer and early in autumn hunters frequently see many cottontails along roads. When they start to hunt the animals late in autumn, the pursuers express disappointment often at the fewer rabbits, and inquire for causes of the decimation. To obtain better understanding of reasons for autumnal losses investigation was conducted on a 185-acre tract of farm land, Decatur County, Iowa, from July 28 to December 31, 1952. Particularly the losses and causative agents during September and the three following months will be reported.
The Host Affinities Of Lsospora Bigemina-Type Coccidia, Elery R. Becker
The Host Affinities Of Lsospora Bigemina-Type Coccidia, Elery R. Becker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Dogs, cats and certain other carnivores are the hosts of a coccidium of the family Eimeriidae known as lsospora bigemina (Stiles, 1892) (Fig. l). This Isospora has three outstanding and peculiar characteristics: (1) Its endogenous development takes place in the lamina propria or cores of the villi of the small intestine of its host in chronic infections, but in acute infections it may colonize the epithelial cells of the entire small intestine: (vide Wen yon, 1926, and Wen yon and Sheather, 1925) ; (2) Its oocysts sporulate completely in situ when occurring subepithelially and are passed in the fully …
Electron Micrographs Of The Pellicle Of A Species Of Euglena, James F. Reger, H. W. Beams
Electron Micrographs Of The Pellicle Of A Species Of Euglena, James F. Reger, H. W. Beams
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Electron microscope studies on whole mounts of Euglena demonstrated that the pellicle was composed of alternate grooves and ridges which were orientated in a spiral and longitudinal direction with respect to the long axis of the animal (Saxe 1947; Groupe 1947). Wolkin and Palade (1953) have presented electron micrographs of sectioned Euglena and made brief reference to the pellicle. It is the purpose of this paper to present further details on the structure of the Euglena pellicle as seen in thinly sectioned material under the electron microscope.

Results Of Iowa's First Deer Season In Recent Years, Glen C. Sanderson, E. B. Speaker
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus, was undoubtedly abundant along the streams of Iowa when white man first settled here. The greater portion of the state, however, was covered with a lush growth of prairie plants and grasses more conclusive to the production of prairie chicken than of deer. Leopold (Crane, 1933) reported the original stock of deer was mostly gone by 1865, although a few herds remained until about 1915. Madson (1953) elaborated upon the blizzards of 1848-1849 and the heavy kill by early settlers during the terrible winter of 1856. This may well have marked the beginning of the …
The Yolk Nucleus And Cytoplasmic Inclusions Of The Egg Of The Goldfish, Carassius Auratus, Guillermo Mendoza
The Yolk Nucleus And Cytoplasmic Inclusions Of The Egg Of The Goldfish, Carassius Auratus, Guillermo Mendoza
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It is the purpose of this paper to contribute some information concerning certain cytoplasmic components of the ovum of the goldfish, Carrassius auratus. The writer's primary concern has been the study of the yolk nucleus although some data is given relative to golgi bodies, mitochondria, and yolk. Much already has been written about the "yolk nucleus" of invertebrates and vertebrates but whereas considerable work has been done on the golgi bodies, mitochondria, and yolk of the eggs of fishes, less has been done on the "yolk nucleus" of these forms. Certainly the early work of Balbiani in 1873 (quoted …
