Light And Electron Microscope Studies On The Cells Of The Labyrinth In The "Green Gland" Of Cambarus Sp., Everett Anderson, H. W. Beams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the course of studying the distal portion of the crayfish nephron tubule (Beams, Anderson and Press, 1956) cytoplasmic inclusion bodies of unknown origin were encountered in the cells of the labyrinth with a peculiar fibrous or laminated internal structure. This paper deals primarily with an investigation of these.

The Cayler Prairie: An Ecologic And Taxonomic Study Of A Northwest Iowa Prairie, J. M. Aikman, Robert F. Thorne Jan 1956

The Cayler Prairie: An Ecologic And Taxonomic Study Of A Northwest Iowa Prairie, J. M. Aikman, Robert F. Thorne

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The largest, most varied, and most intensively studied remnant of rolling prairie in northwestern Iowa is the Gayler tract in Dickinson County. This unplowed, ungrazed prairie acreage, located just west of a branch of the Little Sioux River, is undisturbed except for the annual late August cutting for wild hay and the activities of biologists in the summer and hunters in the fall. The proximity of this beautiful prairie to the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, about 4Yz miles away by good roads, has made it the subject of numerous investigations by plant taxonomists, ecologists, entomologists, mammalogists, and other specialists. Several of …

The Distribution Of C14 Labelled Salicylates In Rat Tissues, Esther M. Burnham, W. D. Paul, J. I. Routh Jan 1956

The Distribution Of C14 Labelled Salicylates In Rat Tissues, Esther M. Burnham, W. D. Paul, J. I. Routh

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During the period of development of salicylate therapy, it was demonstrated that many body membranes were permeable to salicylates, and that appreciable quantities were excreted in the urine. With the development of a satisfactory quantitative method by Brodie et al. (1) the salicylate concentration in body fluids and urine could be determined. More recently the successful labelling of salicylates with C14 has placed investigation of salicylate distribution in animal tissues on a more practical basis. The carboxyl group of salicylic acid (2) (3) (4) and the acetyl group of acetylsalicylic acid (5) have been tagged with radioactive carbon. These …

Growth And Other Physiological Responses To Diethylstilbestrol In Diet Of Rats And Guinea Pigs, Rodney Preston, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs Jan 1956

Growth And Other Physiological Responses To Diethylstilbestrol In Diet Of Rats And Guinea Pigs, Rodney Preston, Edmund Cheng, Wise Burroughs

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Recent studies have shown that the inclusion of diethylstilbestrol (stilbestrol) in rations of fattening beef cattle (1) and lambs (2) results in stimulation of liveweight gains and improvement of overall feed utilization in these species of animals. The physiological explanations for this action of stilbestrol are not apparent at this time since no such stimulation from stilbestrol has been noted in other species of animals. In studying the mode of action of stilbestrol in fattening beef cattle and lambs, it seemed desirable to first study the growth responses of certain laboratory animals (rats and guinea pigs) to see if they …

The Effect Of Stimulus Intensities Upon Sensory Pre-Conditioning, Givens L. Thornton Jan 1956

The Effect Of Stimulus Intensities Upon Sensory Pre-Conditioning, Givens L. Thornton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The phenomenon of sensory pre-conditioning was noted originally by Brogden (3) and, for the purpose of this study, may be described in three parts as follows. In part one, Ss are presented with a number of simultaneous pairings of two neutral stimuli, e.g., bell and light. Following this, one stimulus, for example the bell, is made the CS for an avoidance response. Part three consists of presenting the other stimulus (light) for the purpose of determining to what extent it also will elicit the same response as a result of its prior association with the first.

The Flora Of The Pine Hill Prairie Relict, Thomas Morrissey Jan 1956

The Flora Of The Pine Hill Prairie Relict, Thomas Morrissey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The purpose of this paper is to describe one of the few remaining tracts of virgin prairie in eastern Iowa. The Committee on Conservation of the Iowa Academy of Science, particularly in the reports of Dr. Ada Hayden (1945, 1946), has urged the preservation of native Iowa grasslands in order that they may serve as natural out-of-doors laboratories for the study of ecological and taxonomic problems. A flora of the kind presented here may be of value when compared to grasslands in the eastern and western states: It may help determine the effect of environmental forces which vary in different …

A Summer Travel Course In Field Natural History, Martin L. Grant Jan 1956

A Summer Travel Course In Field Natural History, Martin L. Grant

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The most interesting, informative, and profitable course taken by the writer as an undergraduate (at Oberlin College) was a travelling field course through the northwestern states led by Dr. Lynds Jones, Professor of Ecology. In direct imitation of this, a similar course was conducted in the summer of 1955 by Iowa State Teachers College, which covered 6,600 miles, from Cedar Falls to the northwest corner of the state of Washington, through the Badlands and Black Hills, and Yellowstone, Glacier, Mt. Rainier and Olympic Parks, returning by way of the Oregon coast, Crater Lake, northeastern California, Great Salt Lake, Dinosaur Monument, …

On Lentodium Squamulosum, G. W. Martin Jan 1956

On Lentodium Squamulosum, G. W. Martin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The genus Lentodium, with its single species L. squamulosum, was established by Morgan (1895) to accommodate a fungus which had then been known for half a century. It was sent to Berkeley from Ohio by Lea in 1845 or earlier; Berkeley commented on it in that year (1845, p. 302) in the following terms: "*Lentinus tigrinus, Fr. A most remarkable state of this species has been found by Mr. Lea (n. 245) in which the gills have anastomosed, until the whole pileus and gills have become a hard, solid mass. At first sight it has quite …

Blood Lipids In Progressive Muscular Dystrophy, R. L. Dryer, A. R. Tammes, J. I. Routh, W. D. Paul Jan 1956

Blood Lipids In Progressive Muscular Dystrophy, R. L. Dryer, A. R. Tammes, J. I. Routh, W. D. Paul

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Muscular dystrophy is a heredofamilial disease characterized by primary degeneration of certain groups of voluntary muscles. Although several forms of the disease are recognized clinically the basic metabolic defect is probably the same in all cases, regardless of the outward manifestations. In many instances it appears that the genetic defect is sex-linked, while in others it is not. All of the members of a given family may not show the obvious signs of disease, but if a careful study is made the non-affected members often show more or less subtle and asymptomatic defects which may be characterized as abortive forms …

Ibex Lowensis, First Evidence Of Fossil Goat In North America, Harris A. Palmer Jan 1956

Ibex Lowensis, First Evidence Of Fossil Goat In North America, Harris A. Palmer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the problems dealing with the migration of Quaternary Bovid stocks from Eurasia to North America via the Bering Straits, is the extreme fragmentary nature of the fossil record. A number of the dozen or so genera now recognized have been established on the basis of single fragmentary specimens. Many times these consist of isolated bone fragments such as horncores, partial crania, dentitions and even less diagnostic elements of the axial skeleton. As recently as 193 7 species of two genera mw to the North American continent were identified from Alaskan deposits on the basis of similar fragmentary remains …

Some Observations On Regeneration In Dileptus Anser, Paul A. Meglitsch, Thomas Johnson Jan 1956

Some Observations On Regeneration In Dileptus Anser, Paul A. Meglitsch, Thomas Johnson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

One of the most interesting capacities of protozoans is their ability to replace lost parts following injury. Although they are structurally the equivalent of cells they are functional organisms, and a study of their behavior makes it possible to bring together concepts usually applied in the cellular field with those applied in the analysis of whole organisms. The same factors that operate to evoke a particular form in the whole organism must act in a small regenerating piece of a protozoan. Whether these factors are nuclear genes or protoplasmic organization, they act rapidly in the regenerating animal, regulating the form …

Metachromasia In The Hearts Of Human Embryos And Fetuses, E. V. Enzmann, E. A. Schillinger Jan 1956

Metachromasia In The Hearts Of Human Embryos And Fetuses, E. V. Enzmann, E. A. Schillinger

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The matrix of certain mammalian tissues contains several types of sulfated and non-sulfated mucopolysaccharides (cf. Meyer, 1948) in addition to other carbohydrates (cf. GIegg et al, 1954), cement substance and fibrils. One of the non-sulfated mucopolysaccharides, i.e., hyaluronic acid, has been demonstrated in connective tissue, in teeth, in brain tissue, in the intervertebral discs, bovine vitreous humor, synovial fluid, the lung and other tissue. (Bairati et al, 1952; Bensley, 1950; Friedman, 1953; Holland, 1954; and others). The mucopolysccharides are depolymerized under certain conditions by specific enzymes; thus hyaluronic acid is depolymerizcd by the "spreading factor" (Duran-Reynals, 1928), the "Eizytoplasma auflosende …

Adrenal Ascorbic Acid Depletion Without Eosinopenia In Hypophysectomized Rats Injected Lntrasplenically With Corticotrophin, Frederic A. Giere, W. J. Eversole Jan 1956

Adrenal Ascorbic Acid Depletion Without Eosinopenia In Hypophysectomized Rats Injected Lntrasplenically With Corticotrophin, Frederic A. Giere, W. J. Eversole

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Several workers (Greenspan et al., 1950; Reinhardt and Li, 1951; Stack-Dunne and Young, 1951) have reported a lack of correlation between the eosinopenic, adrenal ascorbic acid lowering activity, and maintenance of adrenal weights with various adrenocorticotrophic preparations. Reinhardt et al. (1951) have critically evaluated assay methods for adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and cautioned that differences in rate of absorption, variations in route of administration and dose-time-response relationships may influence the results obtained with different testing procedures. The study reported here was conducted under standardized conditions to determine whether the route of administration would influence the eosinopenic and adrenal ascorbic acid depleting …

Mammalian Predation On Mussels, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1956

Mammalian Predation On Mussels, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The remarkable reproductive potential of fresh-water mussels bears testimony to their rigorous conditions of existence. The external fertilization, and the parasitic larval phase are biological hurdles to the realization of that potential, while the settling of the immature bivalves after leaving the fish host involves the many physical risks of molar action and unsuitable substratum. Predation and disease are usual factors acting to further reduce the life expectancy of any animal but few predators are capable of utilizing adult mussels as food. Crayfish scavenge on injured or dying mussels. A snail in the stream studied, Campeloma decisum Say considered a …

Handbook Of Bacteriology For High School Teachers, David Loring Fagle Jan 1956

Handbook Of Bacteriology For High School Teachers, David Loring Fagle

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The study of bacteriology is frequently not included in the high school science curriculum and often, when it is taught, it is dealt with in only a superficial manner. There are various reasons for this. Very often high school science instructors lack training in courses relating to bacteriology and consequently, feel inadequate to handle the topic with their students. Another factor rests with the fact that bacteria are difficult to study without the aid or microscopes with high power objectives. Many high schools lack this equipment. A third factor is that some parents may feel that it may be dangerous …

A Plan For Preparing And Operating A Marionette Theatre At The Junior High School Level, Louis E. Glorfeld Jan 1956

A Plan For Preparing And Operating A Marionette Theatre At The Junior High School Level, Louis E. Glorfeld

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It was the purpose of this study to present a workable plan for preparing and operating a marionette theatre at the junior high school level. Although a great deal of material for the construction of the marionette theatre has been published and although the marionette theatre has been used in the junior high school, no material has been written specifically for use in the junior high school. This study presents a simple and workable plan for the operation of a marionette theatre which should be of value to the inexperienced teacher and to the teacher who is limited in facilities …

Colonel David B. Henderson: Speaker Of The House, Willard Hoing Jan 1956

Colonel David B. Henderson: Speaker Of The House, Willard Hoing

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The prominence of Iowa in national political affairs has long since declined. A little more than a half century ago her sons were high in the councils of state. Her Senators had acquired great prestige; her Representatives spoke with a voice of authority in Bouse committees. An Iowan was Speaker of the House of Representatives and ten important congressional committee chairmanships were held by Iowans. Two cabinet portfolios--the Treasury and Agriculture--were held by men from the Hawkeye state. Iowans twice neared the presidential office and one might have ridden into office on an assassin's bullet had he previously been willing …

Some Photographic Materials And Techniques For High School Biology Teachers, Robert L. Calentine Jan 1956

Some Photographic Materials And Techniques For High School Biology Teachers, Robert L. Calentine

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Biology teachers in the smaller high schools are often confronted with the problem of securing sufficient classroom teaching material: charts, specimens, and reference books. A relatively inexpensive method of obtaining resource material would prove valuable to teachers confronted with this problem. Granting that actual study of specimens is of greater value than indirect methods, it is often helpful to have a supply of supplementary visual aids.

The Effects Of Antibiotics Aureomycin And Terramycin On The Disease Crown Gall In Tomato Plants, Charles Raymond Anderson Jan 1956

The Effects Of Antibiotics Aureomycin And Terramycin On The Disease Crown Gall In Tomato Plants, Charles Raymond Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The disease crown gall manifests itself on various woody or herbaceous plants by the formation of tumor-like enlargements at the crown or on other parts or by extensive production of organs (roots, shoots). In both cases the abnormal development is an uncontrolled hyperplast, resulting in tumors or galls of varying sizes and form or in the production of organs, frequently out of normal position and in excessive numbers. Because of the frequent location of the galls on the stem or trunk near or at the ground level, the disease has been known as crown gall. Various other names such as …

Variation In Length Of Songs Of The Black-Headed Grosbeak During The Breeding Season, Henry G. Weston Jr.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

From April to September, 1945, and April to June, 1946, data were gathered on the breeding behavior of the black-headed grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) in Strawberry Canyon, on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley, California. Particular attention was given to the role of the sexes at the nest (Weston, 1947). Data were also gathered on variations of songs of the male during the breeding season.

Growth, Form And Survival Of Plantation-Grown Broadleaf And Coniferous Trees In Southeastern Lowa, Norman J. Hansen, A. L. Mccomb Jan 1955

Growth, Form And Survival Of Plantation-Grown Broadleaf And Coniferous Trees In Southeastern Lowa, Norman J. Hansen, A. L. Mccomb

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Old fields and degraded forest lands in southern Iowa were acquired by the State of Iowa during the period 1935 to 1941. A forestation program was initiated in conjunction with the Civilian Conservation Corps. Hundreds of acres of conifers and broadleafs were planted, principally during the years 1937 through 1941, on eroded upland ridge tops, steep side slopes and narrow drainage basins in the vicinities of Chariton, Keosauqua and Farmington, Iowa. Because of insufficient knowledge and experience concerning forestation practices applicable in this area, the selection of species and planting procedures was approached experimentally. A survey of these plantations was …
