A Cytochemical Effect Of Estrogens Upon The Reticular Tissue, R. F. Ruth
A Cytochemical Effect Of Estrogens Upon The Reticular Tissue, R. F. Ruth
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Most of the literature about the in vivo effects of estrogens seems to be primarily concerned with vertebrate reproduction. This emphasis is a natural extension of the earliest recognition of induced estrus. However, it has obscured some reports of the effects of estrogens on organs and tissues which have no known reproductive or post-reproductive functions. The main purpose of this report is to draw attention to one such case.
Effects Of Dietary Free C18 Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Dl-Methionine Choline Chloride Mixture On Plasma Cholesterol Of The Male Albino Rat, Erwin T. Janssen
Effects Of Dietary Free C18 Saturated And Unsaturated Fatty Acids And Dl-Methionine Choline Chloride Mixture On Plasma Cholesterol Of The Male Albino Rat, Erwin T. Janssen
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The relationship of dietary fatty acids and the cholesterol levels found in serum and liver is, and has been, under study by many investigators. The relationships involved are undoubtedly intricate and more complex than most investigators seem to imply. Although Jones et al. imply a close relationship between rats and man in dietary requirements and habits, it is good to keep in mind differences that are intrinsic to both man and experimental animals. Effects produced on experimental animals and those produced upon man in dietary studies in some cases may be vastly different. With this in mind, an attempt will …
Three Attempts To Determine The Effects Of An Appetitive Secondary Reinforcer On The Extinction Of An Avoidance Response, Harold Babb, Coral A. Fitterman, James H. Paulson
Three Attempts To Determine The Effects Of An Appetitive Secondary Reinforcer On The Extinction Of An Avoidance Response, Harold Babb, Coral A. Fitterman, James H. Paulson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A study by Pavlov (5, p. 30) indicated that normally painful stimuli applied while hungry dogs were feeding produced less overall avoidance behavior than at times when they were not feeding. In a still earlier study, Jones (3) reported that extinction of avoidance to a feared stimulus was hastened by gradually introducing the stimulus while the child subject was eating. More recently, Farber (1) has presented evidence that feeding in the presence of anxiety-producing cues hastened later extinction to those cues as compared to control animals which did not receive the feeding experience. In Miller's words (4): "Eating and …
Rapid Nuclear Staining Method For Frozen Sections, Robert Dzmura, Peter Gray
Rapid Nuclear Staining Method For Frozen Sections, Robert Dzmura, Peter Gray
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
To be of value, the frozen section technique must be simple, fast and must yield slides showing good definition. Most of the methods currently in use are rapid enough but fail to provide clear details; other methods give good definition but are too time-consuming. The method described here is fast, shows good details and results in permanent slides. It makes use of the stain coelestine blue B, employed earlier by Proescher and others (1946) as a nuclear stain in combination with azophloxine as a cytoplasmic stain. The mixture of the two dyes is unstable and has to be made up …
Influence Of A Hypotensive Agent Upon Coronary Blood Flow And Cardiac Metabolism, Steven M. Horvath, Enid A. Farrand, R. Farrand
Influence Of A Hypotensive Agent Upon Coronary Blood Flow And Cardiac Metabolism, Steven M. Horvath, Enid A. Farrand, R. Farrand
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
There has been considerable doubt as to the direct relationship of coronary blood flow and the level of arterial or perfusing pressure forcing blood into the vessels of the heart muscle. Attempts to delineate clearly these relationships have been complicated by concomitant effects induced by circulating epinephrine. The drug dibenzyline2 makes it possible to evaluate the influence of hypotension on coronary blood flow. Dibenzyline injection induces a fall in blood pressure while maintaining essentially unchanged the cardiac output and the cerebral blood flow (1).

Helminths Of Fishes From Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, Fred Paul Meyer
Helminths Of Fishes From Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, Fred Paul Meyer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1953 it was observed that the fishes taken by anglers in Trumbull Lake, Clay County, Iowa, were "grubby" or wormy" and hence considered unfit for human consumption. This study was undertaken to ascertain in greater detail the parasite fauna of that area. Work was begun in the summer of 1954 and collections were made intermittently through the summers of 1954 and 1955. All fish were examined at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory, Lake Okoboji, Iowa. Final identifications of the parasites were completed at Iowa State College during 1956 and 1957.

The Progression Of Spring In Southeastern Iowa, Lloyd W. Biard, Carlo M. Ignoffo
The Progression Of Spring In Southeastern Iowa, Lloyd W. Biard, Carlo M. Ignoffo
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Is this spring earlier or later than usual? When is the best time to plant? If the ground-hog comes out of his hole today will he see his shadow? Questions such as these have stimulated people to look for and record the occurrence of natural events either as hobbies, rules of thumb for farming or as methods of predicting and recording the arrival of spring. Natural events such as general thaw, leafing of trees and shrubs and plant-flowering have been used in the past by Jaques (1924, 1944), Dodd et al. (1934) and Hodson (1951). In many instances one biological …
A Fen In Southwestern Missouri, Henry S. Conard
A Fen In Southwestern Missouri, Henry S. Conard
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In "A Report on Greene County" by Edward M. Shepard in Geological Survey of Missouri, Volume 12, Part 1, 1898, we find the following description of "Shaking Mound Spring" in n.w. 1/4 Sec. 15, T29N, R24W. "Here the water rises from the summit and seeps off all over the low mound, which is 12 ft. high, and 50 x 70 ft. in dimension." It "is most remarkable from the fact that it shakes all over when walked upon. Poles are easily sunk through the tenacious turf down to a distance of 6 to 10 feet into the black muck that …
Chemical Determination Of Isoftavones, Edmund Cheng, Lester Yoder
Chemical Determination Of Isoftavones, Edmund Cheng, Lester Yoder
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Recent developments in ruminant nutrition by using estrogenic additives to stimulate the rate of gain and feed efficiency of beef cattle (Burroughs et al. 1954) indicated the important role of feeds and forages containing estrogenic substances. Forages such as clover and alfalfa have been shown to contain small amounts of estrogenic substances (Cheng et al. 1953a). An isoflavone derivative, genistein, isolated from soybean oil meal was found to be estrogenic by the mouse uterine weight assay (Cheng et al. 1953b). Several isoflavone compounds have been synthesized chemically (Yoder et al. 1954) and they have been shown to be estrogenic also …
Glucose Tolerance In Lambs As Affected By Type Of Ration, W. H. Hale, R. P. King
Glucose Tolerance In Lambs As Affected By Type Of Ration, W. H. Hale, R. P. King
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Metabolism of glucose is little understood in the ruminant animal. It has been demonstrated that little or no carbohydrate passes into the intestinal tract of adult ruminants on an all roughage ration (Heald 1951). Soluble carbohydrates of roughages are fermented to volatile fatty acids in the rumen. Available data show that 70% of total cellulose digestion occurs in the rumen and 30% in the cecum and large intestine with little or no cellulose digestion occurring in the small intestine (Hale, et al. 1947 and Gray 1951). The end products of cellulose digestion are the volatile fatty acids and not glucose. …

Antidiuretic Substance Levels In Rat Plasma, Frederic A. Giere
Antidiuretic Substance Levels In Rat Plasma, Frederic A. Giere
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In recent years it has been our desire to evaluate the presence of antidiuretic substance (ADS) in the blood of animals under various experimental conditions (Giere, 1951; Eversole, Giere and Rock, 1952; Giere and Eversole, 1954; Eversole and Giere, 1954). For these determinations we have used the method of Birnie, et al. (1950) and also our modification of the technic of Ames and van Dyke (1952). The results herein reported constitute a continuation of the above work to include other physiological and experimental conditions including such controversial subjects as the concentration of ADS in the adrenalectomized rat (Birnie, et al., …
Studies On Ciliates From Mollusks Of Iowa, James H. Penn
Studies On Ciliates From Mollusks Of Iowa, James H. Penn
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The ciliates which live a commensal life on the gills and in the mantle cavities of mollusks include several species of peritrichs, but most of them belong to a suborder of holotrichs called Thigmotricha (Chatton and Lwoff, 1922). Very little work has been done on the geographical distribution and host-specificity of the ciliates of mollusks. Emphasis has been placed rather upon the taxonomic and morphological features.
Effects Of Weather Conditions On The Winter Activity Of Mearns Cottontail, Ancel M. Johnson, George O. Hendrickson
Effects Of Weather Conditions On The Winter Activity Of Mearns Cottontail, Ancel M. Johnson, George O. Hendrickson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
An important phase of cottontail management is estimation of the populations. The accuracy of methods used to determine the numbers may be increased with greater knowledge of the effects of weather conditions on cottontail activity. The effects of temperature on cottontail activity have been observed by several investigators. In Michigan, Allen (1939) found that females tended to use burrows at temperatures of 10° F. Linduska (1947) reported the use of dens by cottontails in southern Michigan to be three times as great at temperatures of -8° to +12° F. as when the temperature ranged from 12° to 32° F., and …
A Broader Approach To High School Publicity Through Three Selected Media, Donald Dean Ambroson
A Broader Approach To High School Publicity Through Three Selected Media, Donald Dean Ambroson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Communication between the school and the community has been a problem to educators and patrons of school districts for some time. In the early years of our country, the school was the center of the community and nothing happened in the school that the people in the area did not know. As the urbanization of our country began to take place, the school gradually lost its top spot on the conversational list of the people within the school district. Only within the smallest communities did communication of school and community not suffer. Most of this communication was of the personal …

The Effect Of Low Levels Of Diethylstilbestrol And Plant Estrogens Upon Performance Of Fattening Lambs, C. D. Story, W. H. Hale, E. W. Cheng, Wise Burroughs
The Effect Of Low Levels Of Diethylstilbestrol And Plant Estrogens Upon Performance Of Fattening Lambs, C. D. Story, W. H. Hale, E. W. Cheng, Wise Burroughs
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The excellent feeding properties of good quality legume hay and certain vegetable oil meals have long been recognized by the livestock producer. The observed feeding values of these feedstuffs cannot be attributed entirely to their classical nutrient compositions. It has been long suspected that they contain unidentified .factors that are stimulatory to growth.
New Intermediates For The Synthesis Of Androgenic Groups, Lester Yoder
New Intermediates For The Synthesis Of Androgenic Groups, Lester Yoder
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A large number of compounds of steroid origin with variable androgenic activity have been described since Butenandt and Tscherning (1) first isolated androsterone in 1934. Later following the nitrogen balance experiments of Kochakian (2) with the more active androgen, testosterone, an anabolic activity was recognized as a closely asociated property of androgens. Moreover this anabolic activity in some of the newer steroid androgens has now been found to deviate independently from their androgenic activity (3) (4). These developments are of great interest not only in the production of more efficient gains in animal nutrition but also in the maintenance of …
The Effect Of Diethylstilbestrol On The Digestibility Of Dry Matter And Nitrogen And On Nitrogen Retention In Lambs, C. D. Story, P. G. Homeyer, W. H. Hale
The Effect Of Diethylstilbestrol On The Digestibility Of Dry Matter And Nitrogen And On Nitrogen Retention In Lambs, C. D. Story, P. G. Homeyer, W. H. Hale
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although the usefulness of orally administered diethylstilbestrol (stilbestrol) in increasing weight gains and feed efficiency of fattening cattle has been established, little is known concerning the mechanism by which it exerts its beneficial effect. Two possible modes of action may exist. First, the stilbestrol may have some effect on the rumen microorganisms which might cause an increased digestion of feed in the rumen. Brooks et al. (1954) have shown that stilbestrol increased the digestibility of cellulose in the artificial rumen. They also obtained increased cellulose and protein digestion in sheep when stilbestrol was fed. However the levels fed the sheep …
A Case Of Gila Monster Poisoning With A Summary Of Some Previous Accounts, Martin L. Grant, L. J. Henderson
A Case Of Gila Monster Poisoning With A Summary Of Some Previous Accounts, Martin L. Grant, L. J. Henderson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Since published accounts of the effects of Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum Cope) bites are variable and conflicting, due undoubtedly to the many uncontrolled factors involved, it has seemed appropriate to put on record the details of one which was observed under unusually favorable circumstances. In this instance the first author was the patient, or experimental animal, or victim, depending on the point of view, and the second author was the attending physician. They tried to play the additional part of impartial observers, and, if a built-in bias is to be detected, it can be blamed on the difficulty of separating …
Some Ecological Notes On The Alpine Tundra In The Area Of The Juneau Ice Field, Richard T. Ward
Some Ecological Notes On The Alpine Tundra In The Area Of The Juneau Ice Field, Richard T. Ward
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During the summer of 1949 an introductory study of the vegetation of nunataks and peripheral tundra areas of the Juneau Ice Field was made. The field work constituted a part of the Juneau Ice Field Research Project, which in addition to ecology includes investigations in the fields of geology, glaciology, meteorology, seismology, and cartography. Except for a small plant collection made by a reconnaissance party in the previous summer, the vegetation of this ice field was virtually unknown, as were in fact the other scientific aspects. The expedition of 1949 was the first group to spend an entire summer on …
Mental Health Research In A Psychiatric Setting, Irwin J. Knoff
Mental Health Research In A Psychiatric Setting, Irwin J. Knoff
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Modern psychiatric facilities are usually staffed by representatives of psychiatry, psychology, social work, nursing, occupational therapy, and recreational therapy. While each group has in one way or another indicated interest in research, the current overwhelming need for treatment and the dearth of professionally trained personnel have made it necessary for many workers to neglect research activities almost entirely. By tradition and purpose, most psychiatric hospitals focus on service functions and the clinician in this setting is expected to accept this as his principal responsibility. Too often research is viewed as a luxury to be enjoyed sometime in the future when …
