A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal
A Program Of Correlation For The Sixth Grade Teachers Of India, Jagdish C. Goyal
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The people of India had long been dissatisfied with the educational program which existed prior to the Basic system of education. The traditional system which preceded Basic education originated with the Charter Act of 1813 of the East India Company of Britain. Only a relatively few persons benefited directly from this system; it never reached the masses. This policy of "downward infiltration" created some complex and unfavorable results. It is important to note in this connection a statement from the 1958 UNESCO world Survey of Education that "owing to defects in the official policies, the position of mass education in …

Birth Weight Relations In Human Multipara, E. V. Enzmann, S. D. Miroyiannis
Birth Weight Relations In Human Multipara, E. V. Enzmann, S. D. Miroyiannis
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
It has been shown previously that the weight (W) of an entire litter of newborn young of multiparous mammals is proportional to the number (N) in the litter. This proportionality may be expressed by the empirical equation
K
W=N+C
where K is assumed to have the properties of a partition coefficient and expresses the manner in which a limited nutritional supply is shared by the members oi the litter. This relationship also holds for human multipara, though it is modified by the inability of the human mother to increase the nutritional level to the same extent as other species we …

Studies On The Effects Of Maintenance Of Hamster Adrenals In Vitro, Philip A. Kendall, Mona R. Miltzer, George R. Zimmerman
Studies On The Effects Of Maintenance Of Hamster Adrenals In Vitro, Philip A. Kendall, Mona R. Miltzer, George R. Zimmerman
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Whole adrenals of the young adult hamster were maintained in culture. In most of the experiments the organ was supported on lens paper, but, latterly, cellulose and gelatin sponge were used. The culture media employed were (1) Ringer's Solution (no nutrient), and (2) a nutrient mixture consisting of modified Krebs-Ringer's Solution, lactalbumen hydrolysate, yeast extract and horse serum. The maintenance period was up to seven days, and the culture medium was freshened regularly in certain cases. Organs were weighed at the beginning and end, and sometimes during maintenance. Histological appearance at termination was compared with that of a freshly extirpated …
Experimental Studies On The Effects Of Certain Environmental Factors On Fecundity And Longevity Of The Rotifer, Francis A. Pray
Experimental Studies On The Effects Of Certain Environmental Factors On Fecundity And Longevity Of The Rotifer, Francis A. Pray
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Philodina megalotrocha were grown in isolation culture in Knop's solution or variations thereof, buffered at pH 8.4, at a constant temperature of 30° C. Temperature toleration ranged from 5° C. to 35°C. Upper and lower limits of pH tolerance were pH 10.2 and pH 4.0. Longevity in low salt concentrations (0.02 percent) was increased over that of high concentrations; egg production was not altered except at high concentrations (0.06 percent), at which point it was very low. The effects were tested, one at a time, of high and low concentrations of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. In low calcium solutions longevity …
Modification By Light Of 24-Hour Activity Of White Rats, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
Modification By Light Of 24-Hour Activity Of White Rats, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The 24-hour rhythm of running activity of white rats originates from a light-cycle and can be reversed by illuminating at night rather than by day. If continuous light is used, the activity phase of the rhythm remains 8-12 hours in length but shows a regular, constant and definite amount of alteration or delay in the time of starting so that the activity block travels around the clock. Behavior modification such as this should be called a photoperiodic response. In the present studies the photoperiodic data were: (1) the delay in time of starting activity for rats in continuous light was …
Penned Game Birds In Dieldrin Treated Fields, M. E. Stempel
Penned Game Birds In Dieldrin Treated Fields, M. E. Stempel
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Granular dieldrin was applied by air to control Japanese beetles. Fourteen pheasants and 12 quail in four pens were exposed to the application. Nearby were wild quail, songbirds and starlings, but no pheasants. Later, remains of some wild birds were seen or reported. Nine quail and one starling "posted" at Ames had lesions similar to those in birds affected by toxemia. One quail that died before the operation and two pheasants that were examined did not show these lesions.
A Multiple Point Recorder For Small Animal Locomotor Activity, Harold W. Shipton, John W. Emde, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
A Multiple Point Recorder For Small Animal Locomotor Activity, Harold W. Shipton, John W. Emde, G. Edgar Folk Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
This recorder is intended to simplify the assessment of data gathered from photoelectric actometers registering total locomotor movements. The information is presented automatically in two forms: (1) a curve of total activity over a 24 hour period, (2) a bar graph of the activity in each 30 minute time interval. A further trace is used to enable the time of onset of bursts of activity to be judged with reasonable accuracy. A particular advantage lies in the fact that the recording pens are stationary, making it possible to plot the outputs from several activity counters across the whole width of …

Some Characteristics Of Bacteria Isolated From Diseased Larvae Of The European Corn Borer, Russell J. Beers, William R. Lockhart, Earle S. Raun
Some Characteristics Of Bacteria Isolated From Diseased Larvae Of The European Corn Borer, Russell J. Beers, William R. Lockhart, Earle S. Raun
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A large proportion of the bacteria isolated from diseased corn borer larvae are pleomorphic, with rods, diplococci, filaments and various transition forms occurring in many cultures. Gram reaction is negative, although the coccoid forms show a tendency to retain gram positivity. In morphology and biochemical characteristics, these isolates resemble certain entomogenous bacteria described by earlier workers, but are similar also to a group of bacteria from human sources which have been designated as members of the tribe Mimeae DeBord. Further studies have been initiated to determine the pathogenicity and the proper taxonomic position of these cultures.

Dna, Rna, Lipid Phosphorus, And Acid Soluble Phosphorus In Normal A-Jax Mouse Livers, D. S. Dudley, William H. Coppock, Leland P. Johnson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The concentrations of these substances in wet liver tissue from randomly selected, adult mice were determined colorimetrically. DNA exhibits a modal concentration near 320 mg. per 100 gm. of wet tissue. Cytoplasmic constituents do not exhibit modal concentrations. Preliminary measurements performed upon mice fed carbon tetrachloride in olive oil indicate lower concentrations of RNA, acid soluble phosphates, and lipid phosphates in experimental mice.

Host-Parasite Relationships Of Spirorchis Elegans Stunkard (Trematoda: Spirorchiidae), Patricia Jena Schroeder, Martin J. Ulmer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Twenty-eight turtles collected in northwest Iowa were examined for helminth infections. Spirorchis spp. were encountered in 16 Chrysemys picta belli and 1 Emys blandingi. At least 4 species were found, namely, S. elegans, S. scripta, S. artericoln, and S. pseudemyae. Spirorchis elegans was found in 7 of the 24 painted turtles and was always recovered from the lymphatics and from the sub-mucosa of the esophagus of the host. These specimens were all sexually mature. It appears that the family diagnosis for Spirorchiidae should be extended to include these habitats. Spirorchis pseudemyae was recovered from intestinal washings of C. picta belli …

The Arthropod Soil Fauna Of A Tall Grass Prairie And Adjoining Pasture, T. Edwin Rogers
The Arthropod Soil Fauna Of A Tall Grass Prairie And Adjoining Pasture, T. Edwin Rogers
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Soils of a native tall grass prairie and an adjoining grazed pasture in central Oklahoma were studied in an effort to determine some of the major groups of Arthopoda represented in the microfauna, and to see what effect, if any, moderate grazing had upon the animals present. During a period of 12 months, 132 cylindrical samples of soil approximately 3 inches deep and 1.6 inches in diameter were taken. Half came from each area. Animals were separated from the soil by the use of Tullgren funnels. Soil temperatures, moisture content, and volume weight of samples were recorded. From the prairie …
Notes On The Mites Of An Iowa Cave, Michael T. Irvin
Notes On The Mites Of An Iowa Cave, Michael T. Irvin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
An investigation was made of some of the environmental factors which are most important in determining the distribution of Acarina in caves. Because of the relative stability of the environment, Bogus Cave, Jones County, Iowa, was selected for the study. A moistened camel's hair brush, an aspirator, and the flotation method were used to collect specimens. Three families of mites (Eupodidae, Ascaidae, and Belbidae) were found; none were troglobites. The data indicate that the mites in Bogus Cave are limited to areas of constant humidity and temperature, a good organic soil cover, relatively small soil particles (100μ to 150μ), and …
Evaluation Of Effectiveness Of Pheasant Flushing Bars In Iowa Hayfields, Eugene D. Klonglan, Russel L. Robbins, Bromfield L. Ridley
Evaluation Of Effectiveness Of Pheasant Flushing Bars In Iowa Hayfields, Eugene D. Klonglan, Russel L. Robbins, Bromfield L. Ridley
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A three year study on 394 acres of hayfields revealed an overall reduction in hen mortality of 38 percent through the use of flushing bars. This was significant at the .01 probability level. For the individual years, only 1954 showed a significant reduction in hayfield mortality, the observed 54 percent decrease being significant at the .05 probability level. The bars were most effective in flushing hens that were in the hay hut not sitting on the nest at the instant before the mower passed. A large proportion of hens on the nest was saved if incubation had not been started. …
Operant Discrimination In The Schooling Fish, Brachydanio Rerio, Bill B. Jackson
Operant Discrimination In The Schooling Fish, Brachydanio Rerio, Bill B. Jackson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although many species of fishes normally congregate in schools, the majority of these fishes will successfully survive in an individual existence. However, the question has been raised as to what extent the operant behavior of schooling fishes remains unchanged when they are isolated from the group. Experiments by Welty (1934) have indicated that goldfish learn mazes more rapidly when grouped than when isolated. Further, he found that motor responses are retained by a group better than by an individual. Breder and Halpern (1946) point out that fishes will sometimes not feed until they see a companion feeding. In order …
The Contribution Of De Bary To Our Knowledge Of Myxomycetes, G. W. Martin
The Contribution Of De Bary To Our Knowledge Of Myxomycetes, G. W. Martin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The slime molds have been known scientifically for over two centuries. Even before Micheli's time, there is record of references to Fuligo, and in 1729 Micheli published recognizable descriptions and illustrations of several genera and species. Other pre-Lipnean botanists studied the group, but it was not until Linnaeus had stimulated interest in things botanical (although, as is well known, he added nothing to our knowledge of the fungi and slime molds) that extensive study was devoted to the group. The work of Batsch, Bulliard, Schrader, Schweinitz and some of their contemporaries gave us a taxonomic basis for the species, while …
Recent Locality Records For Some Iowa Mammals, Emmett Polder
Recent Locality Records For Some Iowa Mammals, Emmett Polder
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1953 the writer published a Checklist of Iowa Mammals with notes on new species and changes in distribution since 1937. At that time it was apparent that much information was lacking on distribution of some species. A few forms were small, retiring, and difficult to collect. A large number were conspicuous fur bearers and game species that had moved into new territory or had escaped notice of systematic mammalogists in the past. Some larger mammals for which considerable distribution data were lacking included the otter, grey fox, wildcat, woodchuck, chipmunk, red squirrel, grey squirrel, and white-tailed jack rabbit. Most …

Pilot Knob Bog As A Habitat, Paul E. Smith, Richard V. Bovbjerg
Pilot Knob Bog As A Habitat, Paul E. Smith, Richard V. Bovbjerg
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The purposes of this paper are to introduce some of the physical characteristics and to summarize the geological and recent history of a northern Iowa Sphagnum bog. The marshy portion of Dead Man's Lake, Pilot Knob State Park, was referred to as a bog by L. H. Pammel (1928) and described as a sphagnum mat by Grant and Thorne (1954). The park is located on the Hancock side of the Hancock-Winnebago county border in sections three and four of Ellington township. It is four miles east of Forest City.
