Upgrade Of Rare Earth Element Concentrate By Selective Dissolution And Ion Exchange, James Patrick Lepke
Upgrade Of Rare Earth Element Concentrate By Selective Dissolution And Ion Exchange, James Patrick Lepke
Theses and Dissertations
The rare earth elements (REEs) are irreplaceable in modern technology as theyplay a central role in catalysts, fiber optics, permanent magnets, and a myriad of other final products. These products go on to serve a variety of industries, including medical research and renewable energy. Crustal deposits of rare earths that are economically exploitable are very uncommon, with the largest known deposits occurring in China. During trade disputes, China has shown they are willing to exploit this natural monopoly over REEs, causing turmoil and large price fluctuations in the market for these critical minerals. This uncertainty led many countries to explore …

A Review On The Influence Of Processing Methods On Corrosion Rates Of Mg-Cnt Nanocomposites, Jiselle Thornby, Ali Alshami, Meysem Haghshenas
A Review On The Influence Of Processing Methods On Corrosion Rates Of Mg-Cnt Nanocomposites, Jiselle Thornby, Ali Alshami, Meysem Haghshenas
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
Several studies have reported the corrosion rates of magnesium carbon nanotube nanocomposites, but their corrosion behavior is still not well understood. Adding carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to magnesium (Mg) matrices almost always results in an increase in mechanical properties, e.g., increased elastic modulus, hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and yield strength. However, this increase in mechanical properties usually comes at the expense of compromised corrosion resistance. Galvanic interactions between the carbon nanotubes and the magnesium matrix are the usual culprits of nanocomposite corrosion. It is important to study the corrosive behavior of these materials further to create a nanocomposite that is less …

Hydraulic Fracture Propagation And Its Geometry Evolvement In Transversely Isotropic Formations, Dezhi Qiu
Hydraulic Fracture Propagation And Its Geometry Evolvement In Transversely Isotropic Formations, Dezhi Qiu
Theses and Dissertations
During the last two decades, the oil and gas industry started production from unconventional reservoirs, thanks to the rapid development of hydraulic fracturing technology. Fractures such as joints, faults, veins, and bedding planes are ubiquitous in unconventional formations such as laminated reservoirs. These discontinuities always form complex networks affecting the hydrological and mechanical behavior of subsurface rocks. Ideally, hydraulic fractures are expected to communicate these fracture networks to form a continuous path for fluid flow. However, the interaction mechanism between hydraulic fracture and natural fractures may result in different propagation paths to form various fracture geometries and stimulated reservoir volume …

Numerical Simulations Of Hydraulic Fracturing Through Perforated Wellbores, Omar Akash
Theses and Dissertations
Unconventional reservoirs such as tight formations and plays, are known by their ultra-low permeability. To economically produce hydrocarbon from these reservoirs, technology-based solutions need to be deployed. hydraulic fracturing is a widely accepted and applied technology for successful development of unconventional reservoirs.
The fractures initiated near wellbore can have different lengths, widths, and heights. As a result, a complex fracture network is expected to be formed near wellbore. The hydraulic fracturing design is related to several parameters. Some of these parameters cannot be altered such as the geological attributes and mechanical properties of the targeted formation and the field in-situ …

Role Of Gravin/Akap12 Variants In Regulating Endothelial Cell Behavior, Ashrifa Ali
Theses and Dissertations
A functional endothelium must maintain an equilibrium among processes such as endothelial cell (EC) migration, barrier function and angiogenesis. The endothelium is constantly exposed to external factors that that result in a complex network of signaling wired to several possible cellular outcomes. A-kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) have a critical role in regulating cell signaling by providing spatial and temporal control of signaling proteins to increase downstream target specificity. Several studies have linked gravin (also called SSeCKS or AKAP12), an AKAP, to migration, barrier function, and angiogenesis. However, the functional significance of each gravin variant in ECs has not been investigated …

A review of the two landslide remediation …
Photometric And Astrometric Analysis Of Three Near-Earth Asteroids, Steven D. Newcomb
Photometric And Astrometric Analysis Of Three Near-Earth Asteroids, Steven D. Newcomb
Theses and Dissertations
Asteroid astrometry can provide precise information on an object’s orbital position and motion, while lightcurve photometry can help determine its rotational spin rate, its shape, and the possible presence of a binary satellite object in orbit around it.
This thesis therefore reports the astrometric and photometric study of three near-Earth objects (NEOs): 68347 (2001 KB67), 494999 (2010 JU39), and 455432 (2003 RP8). Because NEOs represent a record of the early solar system, serve as possible sources for minable material, and sometimes present an impact hazard to the planet Earth, the study of these asteroids is important for understanding their orbital …
An Evaluation Of Ci Asteroid Regolith As A Plant Growth Medium For Space Crop Production, Steven Jon Russell
An Evaluation Of Ci Asteroid Regolith As A Plant Growth Medium For Space Crop Production, Steven Jon Russell
Theses and Dissertations
Asteroids are small, undifferentiated bodies that materialized during the formation epoch of the solar system. With a concerted effort to establish a long-term presence in space, crewed missions to asteroids should not be ignored. A critical aspect of human missions is self-sustainability, primarily growing crops via in-situ resource utilization. CI carbonaceous asteroids are a primitive type of asteroid that retain elements found during that early solar system formation. More importantly, the regolith on these asteroids contains soluble elemental nutrients, such as phosphorous and potassium, that crops can use for growth and development. This thesis focuses on the ability of CI …

Performance And Motivation Of Pre- And Early-Career Professional Pilots, Nicholas David Wilson
Theses and Dissertations
The path from student pilot to professional aviator is lengthy, expensive and full of obstacles (Philips, 2016, Wilson & Daku, 2016). An individual pilot’s motivations to persevere and ultimately succeed within this field are yet to be clearly defined. Two motivation theories, Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) (Bandura, 1986) and Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 1985) may inform our understanding the connection between motivation and performance. Through three studies of a program of research, the researcher investigated relationships between distinct types of motivation and performance within the applied discipline of Aviation and Airline Pilot career performance. To begin the research, …
Monolayer Sorption Isotherm Model For Surface Tension Of Aqueous Surfactant Solutions Containing Electrolytes And Organic Mixtures, Kaiser Ahmed Bhuiyan
Monolayer Sorption Isotherm Model For Surface Tension Of Aqueous Surfactant Solutions Containing Electrolytes And Organic Mixtures, Kaiser Ahmed Bhuiyan
Theses and Dissertations
The surface tensions and compositions of aqueous aerosols dictate surface-mediated processes, especially the growth of aerosol particles into cloud nuclei and interfacial chemical reactions. Surface tension is also an indirect proxy for the partitioning of organics to the surface due to enhanced organic activity, driven by a reduction in solubility. Model predictions are generally not available for most surfactant-laden multi-component aqueous solutions, despite the importance of surface tension. Our recent multi-component surface tension model uses competitive adsorption at the interface, but these results are not consistent with salting out.1 We have now applied these techniques to surfactants in pure water …

Metal-containing nanoparticles (MCPs) have been applied in fields ranging from environmental monitoring to biomedicine. This breadth is due to the outstanding behavior of MCPs as catalysts and imaging agents, and the ease with which nanoparticle morphology, composition, and reactivity (such as agglomeration) can be controlled. The work described in this dissertation will have two fundamentally different foci that are both essential for further development of MCPs as tools for chemical and bioanalysis. The first focus is on particle-by-particle characterization MCPs and the second focus is on creation of new composite MCPs. A total of four projects are included in this …
Ammonia/Water Thermodynamic Cycle For Lunar Power Applications, Jeremy David Harris
Ammonia/Water Thermodynamic Cycle For Lunar Power Applications, Jeremy David Harris
Theses and Dissertations
For long-term presence on the lunar surface, a reliable and efficient power source is required. A novel thermodynamic bottoming cycle which utilizes ammonia and water—the Kalina Cycle—is evaluated for use on the lunar surface. Terrestrial utilization of the Kalina Cycle shows higher efficiencies at lower temperatures and more compact packaging when compared to some other solar-powered systems. The research question is, "Can an ammonia-water thermodynamic cycle have benefits over other proposed power generation schemes on the lunar surface?" To analyze this question, an analysis of alternatives is performed which evaluates the Kalina Cycle against previously analyzed lunar power systems. Eight …
Numerical Investigation Of Aerodynamic Effects On Ash Impaction And Outside Ash Deposition Rates During Second Generation Atmospheric Pressure Oxy-Coal Combustion, Monika Kuznia
Theses and Dissertations
Oxy-combustion is one of the most competitive technologies for retrofitting existing pulverized coal-fired power plants to facilitate carbon capture and sequestration processes to reduce fossil fuel-derived carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. However, one of the obstacles hindering the widespread commercialization of this technology is the need to recirculate large volumes of flue gas to the boiler. Second generation atmospheric pressure oxy-combustion technologies have been developed to reduce the volume of recirculated flue gas by using high oxygen concentrations in the inlet oxidizer streams. However, recent experiments have shown that an increased ash deposition propensity is associated with these oxygen-enriched …

Investigation Of Factors That Affect Site Selection For Geothermal Energy Extraction In North Dakota, Ogonna Obinwa
Theses and Dissertations
Geothermal energy is independent renewable energy extracted from deep and shallow subsurface to provide electricity and heat for many applications. At shallow depths of about 3000 feet (914 meters), temperatures as high as 70 degrees Celcius could be extracted and used for domestic and commercial heating systems. Deeper and hotter resources are usually available at depths greater than 10000 feet (3048 meters). The hotter the extracted fluid temperature, the better it is suited for electricity generation. New technologies such as binary cycle systems have made it possible to use moderately hot liquids for electricity generation. However, specific conditions must be …
