Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

Aromatic polyimides are known for their remarkable thermal and chemical properties which are greatly influenced by their precursors. In this study, we report synthesis and characterization of four different aromatic polyimides. The four different dianhydrides (ODPA, BTDA, BPDA and PMDA) were reacted with a diamine (BisAPAF) via azeotropic imidization under same conditions. FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of aromatic polyimides and all but one polyimide (HPIBPDA) were found to be completely soluble in common solvents. The obtained molecular weights were between 16,000-32,000 Da, glass transition temperatures were between 250-275°C, degradation temperatures were above 550°C and the d-spacing values were around …

Earth System Science and Policy Faculty Publications

Non-point source (NPS) pollution from agricultural lands is the leading cause of various water quality problems across the United States. Particularly, surface depressions often alter the releasing patterns of NPS pollutants into the environment. However, most commonly-used hydrologic models may not be applicable to such depression-dominated regions. The objective of this study is to improve water quantity/quality modeling and its calibration for depression-dominated basins under wet and dry hydroclimatic conditions. Specifically, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) was applied for hydrologic and water quality modeling in the Red River of the North Basin (RRB). Surface depressions across the RRB …

Investigating The Impact Of Offset Fracture Hits Using Rate Transient Analysis In The Bakken And Three Forks Formation, Divide County, North Dakota, Cody Lee Brown

Theses and Dissertations

The common development plan for operators in the Williston Basin has been to initially drill and complete one well in order to hold a 1280 acre spacing unit. Once acreage is secure across the asset, operators return to each spacing unit and drill infill wells. By the time infill wells are drilled, reservoir depletion from the original (parent) well can be observed within the spacing unit. Reservoir depletion increases the likelihood of existing wells experiencing inter- communication when infill wells are hydraulically fractured. Such inter-well communication, or frac-hits, often have detrimental effects on existing wells. As such, understanding the effect …

Interfacing The Cfd Code Mfix With The Petsc Linear Solver Library To Achieve Reduced Computation Times, Lauren Clarke Jan 2018

Interfacing The Cfd Code Mfix With The Petsc Linear Solver Library To Achieve Reduced Computation Times, Lauren Clarke

Theses and Dissertations

A computational bottleneck during the solution to multiphase formulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is often during the implicit solution of the pressure-correction equation that results from operator-splitting methods. Since density is a coefficient in the pressure-correction equation, large variations or discontinuities among the phase densities greatly increase the condition number of the pressure-correction matrix and impede the convergence of iterative methods employed in its solution. To alleviate this shortcoming, the open-source multiphase code MFiX is interfaced with the linear solver library PETSc. Through an appropriate mapping of matrix and vector data structures between the two software, the access to …

Specifically, column-integrated aerosol optical thickness (AOT) observations, like those from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR) instruments, have been leveraged for this task. In this doctoral research study, the issues and limitations with estimating PM2.5 from passively-retrieved MODIS and MISR AOT over the contiguous United States (CONUS) were first explored. …

Mechanisms Of Cold Region Hydrologic Changes To Recent Wetting In A Terminal Lake Basin, Diane Frances Van Hoy Jan 2018

Mechanisms Of Cold Region Hydrologic Changes To Recent Wetting In A Terminal Lake Basin, Diane Frances Van Hoy

Theses and Dissertations

The recent changes in hydroclimatic conditions in the Northern Great Plains (NGP) have led to an increase in precipitation and wetland connectivity over the last few decades. The most recent wet period started at 2005 after the last NGP drought (1999-2004). The current wetting is expected to continue and could potentially last into 2038 and beyond. The increases in precipitation during the recent wet period yield an integrated response resulting in hydrologic changes in the NGP. However, the underlying mechanism of the hydrologic changes caused by recent wetting is poorly understood requiring a physically-based modeling framework in order to decipher …

In contrast to young and healthy, people with impaired autonomic control due to aging or disease find regulating blood pressure rather demanding during orthostatic challenge. This thesis performed an assessment of blood pressure regulatory controls during orthostatic challenge via traditional as well as novel approaches with two distinct applications 1) to design a robust automated system for early identification of hypovolemia and 2) to assess orthostatic tolerance in humans. In chapter 3, moderate intensity …

Effect Of Nanopolymer Modified Binder On Hot Mix Asphalt, Gus Yazdani Jan 2018

Effect Of Nanopolymer Modified Binder On Hot Mix Asphalt, Gus Yazdani

Theses and Dissertations

There are some distresses in asphalt pavements such as high temperature permanent deformation (rutting), low-temperature (thermal) cracking, and load-associated fatigue cracking.

Rutting is caused by the accumulated plastic deformation (flow) in the asphalt mixture with repeated application of loads at upper pavement service temperatures. It is predominantly influenced by the aggregate and mix design. Modifiers can stiffen the binder and provide a more elastic material.

Thermal shrinkage cracking results from either a single thermal cycle where the temperature reaches a critical low temperature (Single Event Thermal Cracking) or from thermal cycling above the critical low temperature (Thermal Fatigue).

In this …

Scale-Up Feasibility And Novel Method Of Separation Of Carbon From An Oxygen Carrier, Nicholas A. Dyrstad-Cincotta

Theses and Dissertations

This project targets the development of a technology for segregating fuel-based contaminants (char/carbon) from oxygen carrier material in the context of chemical looping combustion applications. In chemical looping, the well-mixed solids that flow from the fuel reactor consisting of char, ash, and oxygen carrier particles cannot be completely separated into their constituents before they enter the air reactor. The slip of carbon leads to char oxidation in the wrong reactor and poor carbon dioxide separation efficiency. The buildup of ash that is not rejected necessitates rejection of larger quantities of oxygen carrier material, resulting in a high operating cost penalty. …
