Evaluation Of Streambank Stabilization Options On The Tongue River In Cavalier, Nd Utilizing Hec-Ras Hydraulic And Sediment Transport Simulations, Alexa Rene Ducioame
Evaluation Of Streambank Stabilization Options On The Tongue River In Cavalier, Nd Utilizing Hec-Ras Hydraulic And Sediment Transport Simulations, Alexa Rene Ducioame
Theses and Dissertations
The Tongue River in Cavalier has experienced severe erosion and bank failures in recent years. Two homes have been evacuated and demolished, and another lost ten ft of their yard overnight when a tree slumped into the river. The city lies downstream of Renwick Dam and nine other dams upstream of it which have greatly reduced the average flows through town. The resulting lowered water surface is a probable source of the streambank instability. A series of rock weirs was proposed to be installed in town to raise the minimum water surface elevation and potentially provide benefit to all problem …

Theses and Dissertations
This research employs an integrated geological modeling and numerical simulation method on an ultra-tight rock formation to determine if the surfactant imbibition process is a feasible enhanced oil recovery method. The ultra-tight rock formation studied was the Bakken Formation in East Mountrail County, North Dakota. A detailed geological model and numerical simulation model of the formation was established by various technologies, e.g. ArcGIS 10.4, Geologic Evaluation System (GES2016), and Computer Modeling Group (CMG) – STARS programs. All data was collected from actual field measurements and well-log readings of in place formations. The reservoir model provided a 500 ft. × 500 …
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy/Spectroscopy Measurements And Density Functional Theory Calculations On Iridium-Modified Silicon Surfaces And Self-Assembled Monolayer Of Organic Molecules On Graphite, Fnu Fatima
Theses and Dissertations
Research was carried out on two different topics, metal induced modifications in various cuts of silicon (Si) surfaces and molecular thin films. But both projects reveal the underlying theme of self-assembly. It is needed to discover functional means to create components for integrated circuits as well as electronic and photonic devices since nature can rely upon self-assembly at the nano-scale.
Scanning Tunneling Microscopy and Spectroscopy (STM/STS) studies were performed to characterize the morphology of thin octanoic acid film on graphite and the outcome of 1-deecanethiol adsorption on the electronic properties of iridium (Ir) modified Si (110) surface. It was established …

The Application Of Nanoindentation Technology With Simulation On The Micromechanical Properties Of Bakken Formation, Hao Fu
Theses and Dissertations
The application of hydraulic fracturing technology has caused a boom in Bakken oil production since 2000. The geomechanics tests need to be used in optimization of hydraulic design and mechanical properties are important factors that control or influence fracture geometry. Conventionally, in order to know Young's modulus, the industry either uses cores to carry out dynamic and static tests on plugs or sonic logs. These methods are more expensive comparing with nanoindentation. In this study, nanoindentation tests were performed on core samples from Middle and Lower Bakken Formation. This work is especially useful for the optimization of drilling activities, as …
3-D Stress Redistribution During Hydraulic Fracturing Stimulation And Its Interaction With Natural Fractures In Shale Reservoirs, Jun Ge
Theses and Dissertations
The hydraulic fracturing (also called fracturing, or fracking) technique has been widely applied in many fields, such as the enhanced geothermal systems (EGS), the improvement of injection rates for geologic sequestration of CO2, and for the stimulations of oil and gas reservoirs, especially for unconventional reservoirs with extremely low permeability. The key point for the success of hydraulic fracturing operations in unconventional resources is to connect and reactivate natural fractures and create the effective fracture network for fluid flow from pores into the production wells. To understand hydraulic fracturing technology, we must to understand some other affecting factors, e.g. in-situ …

Removal Of Emerging Poly- And Per-Fluoroalkyl Substances By Water Treatment, Ryan Alexander Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (per- and poly-PFASs) are emerging contaminants that have raised great concern in recent years. Two anionic per-PFASs in particular, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), has received worldwide attention for their persistence in the natural environment, resistance to typical environmental degradation, bioaccumulation potential, and adverse health effects in humans. The stable chemical characteristics have enabled these chemicals to be used in many industrial and consumer products over the past 50 years. They have been detected all over the world in various environmental matrices.
The water treatment removal of per-PFASs has been well documented, but the full …

Risk Assessment Of Space Mining Ventures Using Decision Modeling And Monte Carlo Simulation, Michael Roy Jude
Risk Assessment Of Space Mining Ventures Using Decision Modeling And Monte Carlo Simulation, Michael Roy Jude
Theses and Dissertations
Private space exploration is beginning to receive a lot of attention, primarily driven by commercial efforts to mine asteroids. Such endeavors ultimately will require substantial amounts of investment. Yet, potential investors have no way of gauging the risk associated with space mining. The problem statement that drives this study is relatively simple: current estimates of space mining viability do not adequately factor risk into their analysis. Rather than attempting to build a business case for space mining, this research adopts a well-documented business plan and then attempts to assess the risk implicit in that plan. This research is not concerned …

Examination Of Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis In Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty, William Kucera
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
Elective total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most frequently performed inpatient surgical procedure in the United States (Kurtz, Ong, Lau, Mowat, & Halpern 2007). Complications of this procedure include deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), collectively referred to as venous thromboembolism (VTE). Various pharmacological agents exist for VTE prophylaxis. Warfarin and low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) were commonly used for VTE prophylaxis in the past, but with the emergence of novel anticoagulants including factor Xa inhibitors and direct thrombin inhibitors (DTIs), warfarin is used far less frequently. Aspirin is also approved for VTE prophylaxis. The purpose of this study was …
