Resiliency As A Moderating Factor For The Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences On Substance Use In American Indian And Caucasian College Students, Emily Sargent

College students engage in frequent substance use behaviors and experience related consequences. Previous research suggests American Indians (AIs) experience higher rates of substance use and related consequences. Further, AIs may experience negative substance use outcomes given higher rates of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). However, resiliency (i.e., experiencing positive outcomes despite adversity in one’s life) may be one factor that moderates the relationship between ACEs and substance use to in order to reduce use and negative consequences. Birds that nest on the ground in open areas, such as Piping Plovers (Charadrius melodus) and Interior Least Terns (Sternula antillarum athalassos), are exposed to high temperatures in thermally stressful environments. As a result, some ground-nesting avian species have adapted behavioral strategies to maintain thermal regulation of eggs and themselves. We assessed the impact of sand temperature on shorebird nesting behaviors by installing video cameras and thermocouples at 52 Least Tern and 55 Piping Plover nests on the Missouri River in North Dakota during the 2014–2015 breeding seasons. E-textbooks have become more popular with college students, but there are concerns that reading is not as effective from screens as paper. In addition, students may not take advantage of tools afforded by e-textbooks. The purpose of this study was to determine if encouraging students to read from paper or modeling e-textbook tools would be better for students in terms of reading and using their textbooks. In this paper, the feasibility of using deep learning models (DLMs) for evaluation of bridges with overlay systems is investigated. Several laboratory-made concrete specimens with artificial subsurface defects and overlay systems (bonded and debonded) made of cement and asphalt overlay materials were tested using impact echo (IE). One-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) convolutional neural networks (CNNs) were developed, trained, and tested on the IE data. The proposed 1D CNN was the most successful in detecting debonding and subsurface defects; it achieved an average accuracy of 0.68 on the cement overlay specimens and 0.58 for asphalt overlay specimens. Utilizing Clinical Key, NCBI database, Dynamed Plus, Cochrane Review, and the websites for the CDC and FDA, a literature review was produced, encompassing recent research and human studies related to CDI.
