A Physical Fitness Comparison Between Rural And Urban Children And Canadian Fitness Standards, Daniel E. Rosin

The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not Manitoba school students of rural areas were better physically fit than students of urban areas. The investigator was also interested in finding out how these two areas (urban and rural) compared to the National Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation (CAHPER) standards. The comparisons were made by (1) comparing the mean of the rural and urban test results based on the findings of the Centennial Athletic Awards Programme: (2) by compar- ing the mean of rural and urban areas with the CAHPER mean.

A study of the reproductive ecology and brood food habits of sharp-tail grouse (Pedioecates phaslanel.lus jamesi Lincoln) was conducted in southwestern North Dakota during 1967 and 1968. A qualitative and quantitative analysis of the nest and brooding cover selected by the female was made to determine the effect of intensive grazing. Radio telemetry was utilized to monitor dispersals of 13 females from three dancing grounds; eight nests were located. Nest sites were selected in areas of moderate grazing with residual vegetation, or in non-use areas associated with intensive grazing' and land-use. A Study Of The Status Of Physical Education For The Educable Mentally Retarded In North Dakota Schools, Richard G. Studsrud

This study was conducted during 1969 to determine current practices in the physical education programs for the educable mentally retarded in North Dakota schools. The purpose of the study was to obtain and analyze data concerning the following aspects of physical education: teacher qualification, scheduled class periods, type of instruction provided, activities, facilities, equipment and supplies used, tests or evaluation procedures used, and attitudes toward physical education.

Ninety-eight questionnaires were sent to physical education teachers of educable mentally handicapped students. Eighty-two questionnaires were returned and analyzed.

Findings of the study warranted a number of conclusions. A high percentage of teachers …

Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship of several selected variables to the first year undergraduate grade point average of Canadian inale freshmen enrolled at the University of North Dakota during the 1967-1968 academic year.

Procedure: The subjects used in this study were 59 Canadian male freshmen who were enrolled in the University of North Dakota in the Fall of 1967. The subjects were randomly selected from the total Canadian male freshmen population.

Problem

The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine whether college males who had no primary patterns on an SVIB administered in 1966 developed primary patterns on a 1968 retest and whether there were significant proportional differences in the number of students having one or more primary patterns on their 1968 SVIB among the three treatment groups and the control group; and (2) determine if there were significant differences between the scale means of the 1966 and 1968 SVIB for two groups of students who were dichotomized according to primary or no primary patterns in 1968.

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in fitness levels shown among a Control Group and two Experimental Groups over a two year period. The Control Group consisted of seventy-two boys not taking instructional physical education or participating in any athletics. Experimental Group I consisted of one hundred subjects taking the regular physical education classes; Experimental Group II, of forty-eight subjects involved in a year round athletic program in addition to the regular physical education classes.

A Histochemical And Fine Structural Study Of Extracellular Fibrils In The Developing Chick Embryo, James J. O'Connell

The histochemistry of developing connective tissues and its relation to early connective tissue fibrils was investigated in the chick embryo. An area well suited to correlated histochemical and electron microscopic study occurs around the notochord. Here early microfibrils later contribute to the cartilaginous model of the future vertebral body. Chick embryos were sacrificed at one, two, three, four, six and ten days of incubation and were prepared routinely for both light and electron microscopy. A series of five histochemical stains (PAS, alcian blue, Hale colloidal iron, metachromatic toluidine blue, methenamine silver) and two histological techniques (Mallory's connective tissue; Weigert's elastin) …

The Effectiveness Of Cognitive Conflict And Active Participation As Methods Of Inducing The Conservation Of Substance, Leila K. Beard

This study was concerned with the possibility of training for conservation. With the component elements held constant across all groups, the effectiveness of two methods of presentation, cognitive conflict and active participation, were tested by a pretest-training-posttest procedure using a 2 x 2 design with a common control group. Within the treatment groups, a conflict presentation of addition-subtraction and perceptual components was contrasted with a non-conflict presentation of the same addition-subtraction and perceptual components, each in a separate series. An active manipulation procedure was contrasted with passive participation. Results indicated that conservation responses increased within the treatment groups significantly more …

Distribution, Food And Life History Of Tiger Salamanders In Devils Lake, North Dakota, Gary L. Buchli

Food, growth, distribution, migration, metamorphosis, neoteny, and breeding habits of Ambystoma tigrinum diaboli Dunn were studied in Devils Lake, North Dakota. Salamanders I vere captured in gill and frame nets, and growth and metamorphosis were followed on specimens caged in the lake, lood habits were ascertained from stomach analyses and migrating adults were caught in gill nets and trench-barrier t raps.

Salamander adults breed readily in Devils Lake and display a sex ratio of 13 females to 10 males. The population appears to consist of larvae, neotenous gilled forms, aid adults. Adults leave the lake in fall and return in …
