The Biology And Ecology Of River Carpsucker, Carpiodes Carpio (Rafinesque), In The Little Missouri Arm Of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, Darrell John Trzpuc

The life history, growth, and ecologic distribution of river carp- sucker, Carpiodes carpio (Rafinesque), were studied in the Little Missouri Arm of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota, between May 15 and August 14, 1970. In the course of the study 745 river carpsuckers were captured. The distribution of this species in the Little Missouri Arm was influenced by turbidity and water temperature. Dissolved oxygen content and hydrogen ion concentration did not affect their distribution. The condition factor of 2.94 indicated that carpsucker growth in the arm was good . The primary purposes of this study were to determine if any differences exist in creativity between New School and non-New School fourth grade children, between Indian and non-Indian fourth graders, and among urban, rural, and Indian fourth grade children.

Procedure: The research population used in this study consisted of 237 fourth graders enrolled in North Dakota elementary schools. The experimental group consisted of 62 boys and 64 girls who had been enrolled in New School classrooms for a minimum period of six months during the 1969-1970 school year. The study attempted to clarify the relationships between expressed attitude and observed teacher behavior. The purpose was to find positive ways of causing educators to incorporate cognitive and affective processes into their educational activities. At the same time, ways of meeting student needs in a confluent setting were sought.

The review of the literature provided relevant information already available through the efforts of other researchers. A multidiscipline approach in this review resulted in several conclusions:

1. Certain bio-self needs result in feelings that cause behavior.

2. Feelings and learning can be correlated so that behavior change takes place.

Problem: The purpose of this study was to determine whether in-service science assistance will affect positively the attitudes and practices of elementary teachers and students.

Procedure: The investigator designed and implemented a six month in- service science program for elementary teachers and students. The study population consisted of 12 first through sixth grade teachers and their 313 pupils in one elementary school in East Grand Forks, Minnesota.

Change in attitudes and practices of teachers was measured by comparing pre-test and post-test scores on the Actual Science Classroom Environment instrument, which was designed to determine what types of activities teachers perceived …

A Comparison Of The Sportsmanship Values Of Athletes Versus Non-Athletes, Roy D. Schodtler

This study was designed to determine whether there were any significant differences in the sportsmanship attitudes of high school athletes as compared to their non-atbletic peers.

Johnson's (1969) "Sportsmanship Attitude Scale" (SA Scale) was administered to 621 boys enrolled in grades nine through twelve at Palatine High School in Palatine, Illinois. The boys were divided into three major groups—Athle.tes, Non-Athletes, and No Sports—as determined by their experience in organized athletics. The Athletes group was further divided into ten sub-groups, according to the sports in which the subjects had participated.

Vegetation Of The Forest River Biology Area In Relation To Environmental Gradients And Some Patterns And Processes Of Nutrient Cycling, Douglas A. Wikum

Vegetation-environment relationships were studied in 40 plots located on the slopes and the floodplain within the University of North Dakota Forest River Biology Area in northeastern North Dakota. Three of these plots, each dominated by a different major tree species, were selected for a detailed study (May to October, 1971) of nutrient input by litterfall, throughfall, and stemflow.

Coverage values for 109 species of vascular plants and basal area, frequency, density, and mensuration data were determined for seven tree species. A total of 10 species of mosses and 15 of lichens are reported for the 40 plots.

Blood smears and bone marrow smears obtained from sixteen White Leghorn chickens varying in age from five to seventy days after hatching mere stained with Wright's stain, and histological sections of the bone marrow mere stained with Maximow's eosin- azure II stain.

This study of the origin and differentiation of the definitive series of thrombocytes has yielded information that confirms the work of Lucas and Jamroz (19S1) which shows that the thrombocytes are a separate series of blood cells that have an origin independent of the origin of all other blood cells.

Physical educators claim numerous attributes of their program, namely, teaching the whole person; his or her social, mental, and physical well-being. This study purports to measure the relationship of the social status in comparison with physical fitness of ninth grade girls.

The test used to measure the fitness level was the AAHPER Fitness Test. It was administered to all ninth grade girls at Jim Hill Junior High School in Minot, North Dakota. The seven items in the test battery were transformed to norms in the form of percentile scores and then averaged to obtain one fitness score for each subject. …

Two species of thatching ants (Formica obscuripes and F. oreas comptula) are common to the ecotone and woodland habitats of the Forest River Biology Station near Inkster, Grand Forks County, North Dakota. The general ecology for each species was determined with emphasis on mound morphogenesis, colony-founding and population characteristics. For each species the following samples and data were collected: random samples of each population, thatch sample, external and internal mound measurements, and field maps of distribution patterns.

The morphogenesis of F. obscurlpes mounds was found to follow a predictable pattern with three well defined but transitional nest forms: (1) Stage …

This investigation was designed to study current attitudes of women to female roles. An adapted form of the Maferr Inventory of Feminine Values was given to 23 full-time secretaries and 19 feminist women. The inventory consisted of traditional and non-traditional items, and general statements and specific examples, which were rated in appropriateness separately for women and men. Two predictions were made about the subjects' responses: (1) The secretaries would make a greater differentiation between male and female roles, by judging traditional female statements more appropriate for women than men, and non-traditional female role descriptions more appropriate for men than women. …

Multiple unit recording is a relatively new electrophysiological recording technique which records spike potentials from many neurons. In several laboratories, systematic changes have been observed during classical and instrumental conditioning but none under other conditioning procedures. The present study attempts to extend the method of multiple unit recording to discrimination learning using rats as experimental animals.

Five permanent electrodes were implanted in each of six rats. The sites implanted were the dorsal medial hypothalamus, the amygdaloid complex, the reticular formation, the medial geniculate, and the inferior colliculus. The purpose of this study was to determine what histological parameters of the rat's spleen were altered as a result of the anesthetic agent used. It also was desired to determine which anesthetic agent might be the most suitable to use in a transillumination study of the microcirculation of the living rat's spleen.

It was found that sodium Amytal administered intraperitoneally results in splenic dilatation. Chloral hydrate and sodium thiopental, given intraperitoneally, resulted in splenic contraction. Penthrane, ether, and chloroform administered by inhalation technique also resulted in splenic contraction. Penthrane and chloral hydrate while producing splenic contraction appear to do …

Aquatic vascular plants were collected in Walsh, Grand Forks, and Traill Counties, North Dakota, a tier of counties that lie in two physiographic areas; the Red River Valley and Drift Prairie. Collection sites were selected on a geographical basis to include all types of aquatic habitats. A total of 470 collections encompassing 141 species was made during one field season. A sum of 204 species was recorded by the inclusion of records from North Dakota and Minnesota herbaria. Analyses of the 470 collections revealed two species not previously recorded for North Dakota: Carex lenticularis and Ranunculus longirostris. and an extension …
