Morphogenesis Of Photoreceptors In The Chick Retina: An Electron Microscopic Study, Mark D. Olson

An electron microscopic investigation of the morphogenesis of photoreceptor cells in the domestic fowl (Gallus gallus) retina is presented in this study. The fine structural observations illustrate photoreceptor development ranging from five to twenty-one days of incubation and one to two days post-hatching. Retinal tissues were fixed in buffered aldehyde fixative, post-fixed in buffered 2% osmium tetroxide and otherwise conventionally prepared for electron microscopy.
The neural (sensory) retina of the chick is largely occupied by undifferentiated cells within the outer neuroblastic layer from the 5th to 9th days of incubation. This layer is later divided into the inner and outer …

A Comparison Between Teacher-Directed Instruction And Student Self-Directed Study In Physical Science For Undergraduate Elementary Education Majors, Douglas L. Magnus

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this research was to compare the learning which occurred in a college physical science class for pre-service elementary teachers between two teaching-learning methods identified as teacher- directed instruction and student self-directed study. The specific areas investigated were: (1) knowledge of physical science content, (2) development and application of the processes of science, (3) attitude toward physical science and (4) attitude toward student self-directed study.
Procedure: The research sample used in this study consisted of 95 elementary education majors enrolled in four sections of Chemistry 327 which is a required physical science course. The …

The Food Habits And Age And Growth Of Goldeye, Hiodon Alosoides (Rafinesque), In Beaver Creek, Lake Oahe, North Dakota, 1971-72, Paul T. Schadewald

Goldeye from Lake Oahe were studied during 1971-72 to determine their food habits and age and growth. Stomachs were collected from 833 goldeye during twelve 24-hour periods, Contents were analyzed to determine bihourly and spring and summer food habits, Cladocera, principally Daphnia sp.t comprised 75% of the average stomach volume, Frequency of occurrence was 98.4% for Cladocera and 87.2% for Insecta. Young-of-the-year goldeye fed entirely on microcrustaceans. The diet of older age classes was predominantly microcrustaceans, but always included insects. Feeding occurred during all hours of the day, but increased significantly at night. Goldeye were concentrated in surface waters when …

The major purpose of this study was to clarify the meaning of communication in the existential philosophy of Karl Jaspers. The study also attempted to relate communication to the process of existential counseling.The study began with an introduction to existential philosophy in order to place Jaspers’ writings in the perspective of the existential movement. A biographical sketch of Karl Jaspers was also presented, as well as an overview of his philosophical method.Next, the concepts of Existenz, history, and freedom were developed as preconditions to existential communication.Then the concept of communication was considered. Tabulate and rugose corals are described from the Ordovician Red River) Stony Mountain, and Stonewall Formations in southern Manitoba and the Ordovician Bighorn Formation in northern Wyoming. Fifty-four species, 12 of which are new, are distributed in 20 genera. The Flower Model of coral evolution, based on wall microstructure of colonial corals, is extended to include the septa! Microstructure of colonial and solitary corals. "Primitive" corals are characterized by non t-rabeculate walls and septa whereas "advanced" forms are characterizedby trabeculate walls and septa. "Mid-range" corals are those with intermediate stages of trabecular development in walls .and septa. Corals in the …
