Postglacial Ostracod Distribution And Paleoecology, Devils Lake Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, James B. Van Alstine

Sediment cores were taken from Main Bay and Creel Bay of Devils Lake (in 1975 and 1976) and East Devils Lake (in 1978), within the Devils Lake basin, and from Red Willow Lake (in 1979), a control lake outside of the Devils Lake basin, northeastern North Dakota. The cores were sampled, for the recovery of the ostracods, at 10-cm intervals. Fifteen species of ostracods were present in the studied cores: 8 candonids, 1 cyclocyprid, 3 cyprids, and 3 limnocytherids. Two distinct faunas are recognized. Problem. Recently the trend of chemical use by increasingly more and younger adolescents has become recognized as a potentially serious societal problem. National studies have found significant proportions of adolescents who use a variety of chemicals frequently and heavily (Alibrandi 1978; Johnston, Bachman & O'Malley 1979). Although drug use and abuse have clearly been documented in the literature as a serious problem for the adolescent population, there is little conclusive evidence of why some adolescents abuse drugs and others do not.Procedure. The counselor brings to the counseling relationship certain assumptions regarding human nature, its limits, possibilities and processes. Usually these assumptions are not articulated and sometimes they are not known. Counseling, as an endeavor which touches human lives, requires examination of its premises. Hibernation in Richardson's ground squirrels, Spermophilus richardsonii richardsonii, was studied for three winters. Animals were maintained at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous light (LL) during the first winter and at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous darkness (DD) during the second and third winters. The typical ground squirrel hibernation pattern was observed throughout the study although the duration of the total and individual hibernation bouts was shorter than that reported in the field.Histological analyses of the gonads during hibernation indicated a greater amount of gonadotropic activity in male ground squirrels than in female ground squirrels. The primary purpose of this study was to examine empirically Crites' Model of Career Maturity. The rational structure of Crites' model was compared with a statistical structure derived from a hierarchical clustering of items from the Career Maturity Inventory. Paleoenvironmental Analysis Of A Late Holocene Deposit : Stanton Site, West-Central North Dakota, David W. Fischer

The Stanton Site (W1/2NE1/4 sec. 16, T. 144 N., R. 85W.), eastern Mercer County, North Dakota, contains a late Holocene organic deposit in the cutbank of an ephemeral stream on the Missouri Plateau. Strati graphic units of the 104-cm section are, in ascending order: (l) gravel; (2) silty, organic, sandy clay; (3) organic silt; (4) silty, sandy, organic clay; (5) organic silt; (6) sandy, silt, organic clay; and (7) sand. A radiocarbon date of wood from the base of unit 2 indicates initiation of deposition at 325±_115 radiocarbon years B.P.

The present investigation concerns itself with the phenomenon of natural language phonetic symbolism. Proponents of phonetic symbolism, or the hypothesis of phonetic universals, as it is sometimes called, claim that human speech sounds have inherent meaning apart from their learned association with referents in the world. Since phonetic symbolism had been used to explain both success in guessing the meanings of foreign words and also a consistent tendency to attribute particular meanings to selected nonlinguistic verbalizations, it was hypothesized that phonetic symbols were part of an underlying stratum of semantic invariance. The feasibility of liquid extraction as an economic alternative to the ternary azeotrope distillation of an ethanol-water fermenta tion mixture was studied. Experimentation included the determination of the attractiveness of the potential solvents "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, ethyl ether, unleaded gasoline, and #2 diesel fuel. Selectivities and distribution coefficients for these solvents were determined. Analysis included generation of a process flowsheet and the resultant energy requirements and process economics.

Unleaded gasoline was selected aver #2 diesel fuel as the more attractive solvent based on the distribution coefficients, and "Freon" TF, 1-pentene, and ethyl ether were ruled out as potential solvents.

The Relationship Between Transitional Object Attachments In Early Childhood And Psychological Functioning In Later Life, Keith Cohen

This study focused upon assessing various relationships between the presence or absence of a transitional object in early childhood and aspects of psychological functioning in later life. The nature of the inanimate object attachments were determined by stringent criteria involving both self- and parental-reports. Personality differences were found between those subjects demonstrating strong singular attachments that persisted for a considerable period of time and those having no such significant attachments. The nature of what might be considered optimal object attachments was discussed in light of the findings.

The Problem: The purpose of this study was to develop an analytic profile of a secondary education theatre arts program. Five major areas were exam ined: (1) the students, (2) the school's administration, (3) the theatre arts faculty, (4) theatre arts course work, and (5) theatre arts produc tion work. In addition, an examination of the self concepts of theatre students and non-theatre students was made to see if differences existed between the two groups.
