The literature suggests that women have been under-utilized in higher education administration. This study was designed to determine what selected women holding an administrative position of President or Chancellor, Vice President, Dean of an Academic College, or Dean of Students in an Upper Midwest public four-year institution of higher education perceived to be: (1) Significant constraints to career advancement in administration for women in general and in their own career in regard to training and experience; intra-institutional processes, procedures, and attitudes; extra-institutional processes, procedures, and attitudes; and self-imposed factors or behaviors. Melancholia or severe depression is a poorly explored phenomenon within mentally retarded populations. Traditional self-report measures of depression are of limited utility for most mentally retarded individuals. Data from a biological test for depression, the dexamethasone suppression test (DST), in conjunction with data from behavioral rating scales, may provide a more reliable means of delineating the nature of severe depression in mentally retarded individuals.Seven hundred and sixteen of the 810 residents of a large institution for mentally retarded individuals were rated by attendants for various characteristics of severe depression. Wood Lake is a kettle lake within the McHenry end moraine (late Wisconsinan) in eastern Benson County, North Dakota. It is part of the Devils Lake interior basin, near the drainage divide between the Devils Lake basin and the Big Coulee - Sheyenne River drainage. The moraine deposits, part of the Coleharbor Group, are composed of complexly interfingering lenses of gravel, sand, silt, and clay within the till.

Water levels in piezometers around Wood Lake indicate groundwater flows from the southwest into the west side of the lake and out of the lake along the east shore, toward the northeast. …

Environmental perceptions and psychological characteristics of American Indian students were studied to assess the impact of the higher education environment on their psychological development. The sample consisted of high school seniors and university students from freshmen to graduate levels. Each participant responded to a biographical questionnaire, the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and the College University Environment Scales II (CUES II).The responses were analyzed in terms of research questions designed to address (1) the relationship between the psychological and environmental domains, (2) student progress in higher education, (3) the prediction of academic achievement, and (4) differences between males and females and …

The ability to cognitively separate oneself from the immediate behavioral environment has been identified in the literature as the concept of distancing. It has been suggested that the child's distancing abilities are a reflection of his early experiences with the distancing language of significant others in his environment. Several curricula have been developed that focus on strategies that teachers can employ for facilitating distancing in children. Very little is reported in the literature, however, about the distancing language of teachers in practice. The peripheral electrophysiological manifestation of different attentional systems was investigated by recording heart rate. Two groups were differentiated using the personality variable locus of control. Subjects were given a perceptual task, Navon figures, which had figures that differed on global and analytical features. A warning stimulus (x) cued the subjects to the beginning of each trial. Following this task subjects were trained on viewing line drawings in either a global or an analytic style. The Effect Of Hydrocortisone On Auditory Sensitivity, Rodney J. Haug

In order to test the effect of cortisol on auditory thresholds, seventy-five volunteer right-handed college males were given either a 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg dose of hydrocortisone, or placebo, or were part of a control group in a double blind design. Right ear auditory thresholds were determined for frequencies of 500, 1,000, 4,000 and 8,000 Hz using the method of limits. The results were converted to mean threshold change scores by using threshold scores obtained for the same subject prior to treatment. Results indicated that treatment with 20 mg of cortisol reduced sensitivity at 8,000 Hz as compared …

The purpose of this study was to compare learning disabled with nonlearning disabled secondary school students (grades 7 through 12) on their responses to four cognitive style dimensions: (1) psychological differentiation, (2) locus of control, (3) conceptual tempo, and (4) breath of categorization. It was hypothesized that the variables could be used in a discriminating fashion in helping to distinguish the two groups. In addition age was investigated with junior high students being compared to senior high students.Participants for this study were junior-senior high learning disabled and normal students (27 LD and 33 nonLD). She was never famous, but rather was one of the countless numbers of teachers who so profoundly influenced and shaped American education.The life of Kathrine Belanger Macdonald Tiffany, or KB as she was more generally known, spanned a full century, 1878-1978. She both witnessed and participated in much of this country's history, from homesteading to politics. The purpose of this study was to investigate writers' perceptions of how they came to name themselves as writer. While many researchers have investigated the act of writing, little has been done to discover what the adult writer perceives to have been experientially important as a child and adult in the process of becoming and naming one's self writer. Conodonts Of The Bakken Formation (Devonian And Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Michael D. Hayes

Theses and Dissertations

The Bakken Formation is a thin (maximum 145 ft., 44 m), predominantly elastic unit in the subsurface of the Williston Basin in the United States and Canada. The formation consists of two, mostly non-calcareous, grayish-black to brownish-black shales separated by light to dark gray, calcareous and dolomitic siltstone and fine-grained sandstone. The carbonaceous, black shales of the Bakken produce a distinctive geophysical marker and are a major source rock for hydrocarbons in the Williston Basin.

Conodonts were selectively sampled from cores of the Bakken in North Dakota in an effort to determine the age and thermal maturity of the formation. …
