Late Quaternary Environmental And Climatic History Of The Southern Chilean Lake Region Interpreted From Coleopteran (Beetle) Assemblages, John W. Hoganson

A diverse Coleoptera fauna of 462 species in 48 families was collected from 41 locations in the Parque Nacional de Puyehue and adjacent parts of the Lake Region of southern Chile. The sample locations ranged from rain forest habitats at sea-level to Andean tundra habitats at 1500 m msl. Cluster analysis of a Dice similarity coefficient matrix revealed a broad pattern of bioassociations within the large data base, Boundaries between the bioassociations correspond largely with those of the major vegetation zones implying that the distribution of the fauna is strongly influenced by the distribution of plants. Petrology Of The Beulah-Zap Lignite Bed, Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene), Mercer County, North Dakota, David R. Kleesattel

The Beulah-Zap lignite bed is one of several economically important lignites in the Sentinel Butte Formation (Paleocene). This lignite occurs as a subsurface unit in the Knife River Basin of Mercer and I Oliver counties of North Dakota. The Beulah-Zap lignite is a heterogeneous carbonaceous rock unit composed of megascopic and microscopic I components, which are lithotypes and macerals, respectively. Relationships between the maceral contents of the lithotypes follow patterns similar to those of bituminous coals. Coal petrology, the study of maceral and lithotype occurrence and I distribution, was applied to determine: 1) mode of coalification, and 2) depositional environment …

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if significant relationships existed in the way business education faculty, business education departmental chairpersons, academic deans, and college presidents in small four-year public collegiate institutions rated the degree of importance of selected duties of business education departmental chairpersons. A Study Of Chymotrypsin By Active Site Labeling (Fluorescence, Infrared, Modification, Titration, Quenching, Urea)., Jeffrey Lynn Carlson

In order to characterize the environmental and ionic nature of the active site of chymotrypsin (Chy), a number of derivatives were prepared and investigated using direct titration, FTIR and fluorescence spectroscopy. Chymotrypsin anthranilate (CA) fluorescence and it quenching was studied as a function of pH, ionic strength and urea concentration. The emission maximum of CA exhibits a blue shift with increasing pH and titrates with a pK(,a) of 7.7. This pK(,a) decreases for CA derivatives with surface carboxyls blocked. The titration of His 57 is likely responsible for this pH shift. Acrylamide was a better quencher at pH 8 than …

Atmospheric Emissions From A Gasifier Wastewater Fed Cooling Tower, Sheila J. Galegher

Atmospheric emissions from a gasifier wastewater fed cooling tower were studied to determine their environmental effects and their contributions to single-component cooling tower mass balances. The feasibility of using a multicyclone device to separate cooling tower drift from evaporate was also investigated, as was the applicability of sensitive paper and isokinetic tube drift measurement. Data was collected during the operation of a pilot scale cooling tower at the University of North Dakota Energy Research Center. This forced-draft counter flow tower was fed with minimally treated wastewater generated in slagging fixed-bed gasification of lignite, and operated at ten cycles of concentration. …

Rheological Study Of A Direct Liquefaction Feed Slurry, Dennis L. Laudal

A rheological study was made of a liquefaction startup- feed slurry. The slurry consisted of North Dakota lignite sized to 70% less then 200 mesh and a carrier solvent of an thracene oil. The rheological behavior of the slurries, o with coal concentrations of 0 to 40% at 40 C, was shown to be Newtonian, allowing Bernoulli's equation to be used for direct calculation of pressure drop. Calculated values pre dicted the measured data within 10% for the test conditions.
