Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
The North Dakota Physical Therapy Association, the state professional organization for physical therapy practice, asked several of its members involved in the area of pediatric practice to develop guidelines for physical therapy practice in the public school setting in North Dakota. Eleven physical therapists met to give input on developing these guidelines. A list of topics to include in the guidelines was generated, and several therapists volunteered to research and develop one or several of the topics on the list. This independent study report developed information on the topics of qualifications, roles, advanced competencies, and job descriptions for physical therapy …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether people with generalized joint hypermobility also demonstrate hypermobility at the temporomandibular joint. In addition, an attempt was made to determine the relationship between general joint mobility, gender, temporomandibular joint symptoms, and oral parafunction.
Forty-seven physical therapy students worked in pairs under supervision to measure and record: 1) the Beighton hypermobility criteria, 2) maximum mandibular range of motion, and 3) a questionnaire of temporomandibular joint dysfunction and oral parafunctional habits.
The mean Beighton score for males was 1.21 and for females 2.14. Twelve out of the forty-seven subjects (15.5%) had a Beighton …

Eriogonum visheri A. Nels. (Polygonaceae) is a plant species whose distribution in North Dakota is incompletely known. The plant species is listed by North Dakota Heritage Program personnel as a G5/S2S3 [G5 = demonstrably secure globally, although it may be rare; S2 = imperiled in the state (6-20 occurrences) or vulnerable to extirpation; S3 = rare in the state (20+ occurrences)]. The species is Federally listed as C2 [current information indicates that listing as endangered or threatened may be warranted, but information about the species is presently inadequate to support immediate ruling] (Northern region, USDA Forest Service, 1991). Nonenzymatic Glycation Of Cytoskeletal Proteins In Diabetes Mellitus., Michael Ray Brown

Prolonged hyperglycemia, as seen in diabetes, results in nonenzymatic glycation of proteins and DNA. Previous investigation by others has shown that many intracellular proteins are glycated, both, in vivo and in vitro. Nonetheless, only a few proteins have been analyzed for the effect of glycation on their function.Glucose and galactose were found to modify a large number of the lysyl residues in selected cytoskeletal proteins. These results led to the study of myosin and S-1 (subfragment-1 of myosin), first with FITC (fluorescein isothiocyanate; isomer #1) and later with comparatively less reactive sugars (sorbitol, glucose, fructose, and ribose).FITC caused a decrease …

A Study Of Ninth Grade Students' Satisfaction With School And Self-Esteem In Two Grade Organization Patterns, Marcia Jane Brokenik Fivizzani

This study focused on ninth grade students attending school in two grade organization patterns, 7 through 9 and 9 through 12. Students' satisfaction levels with school as measured by the NASSP Student Satisfaction Survey and students' self-esteem measures on the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory were assessed to determine whether a relationship between grade organization, gender, satisfaction with school, and self-esteem existed. Ninth graders from one upper midwest community who attended a four-year high school (N=317) or a 7 through 9 junior high school
Findings revealed that both schools scored within the average range on all subscales of the Student Satisfaction Survey. …

The Effects Of Chronic Migraine And Tension Headache On Neuropsychological Functioning, Kerri J. Lamberty

The present study was designed to examine possible neuropsychological deficits in migraine and tension headache subjects. Past research has been inconclusive, with some studies indicating that chronic migraine headache sufferers do exhibit some neuropsychological deficits such as short-term memory difficulties, gross motor slowing, and verbal memory deficits, while other studies have indicated that no deficits are seen in this group Also examined were headache precipitant and headache-related behaviors that these groups partake in when experiencing headache pain. Past research has suggested that migraine headache sufferers tend to deal with their headache pain differently than tension headache sufferers.

Regulation Of The Nucleosome-Free Promoter Region Of Simian Virus 40., Dianne Marie Kube

We proposed that SV40 T-antigen binding SiteI and adjacent sequences are involved in the regulation of the proportion of SV40 chromosomes containing a nucleosome-free promoter (NFP) region. Wild-type and SiteI/T antigen defective SV40 chromosomes were analyzed by promoter-specific restriction endonuclease digestion and electron microscopy. SiteI/T antigen mutant chromosomes showed a significant increase in the proportion of chromosomes containing a nuclease hypersensitive promoter region. This increase corresponded to a similar increase in the proportion of chromosomes with a LARGE (greater than 4 times the average internucleosomal distance) nucleosome-free region in the SiteI/T antigen mutants as visualized by electron microscopy.
