Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Physical therapists play an important role in the rehabilitation and management of the traumatic brain injured (TBI) patient. Physical therapy is accomplished through therapeutic strategies, intervention techniques, and recommendations for placement and discharge. Many times P.T. services are discontinued for various reasons, two of which are loss of reimbursement or the perception that the patient no longer requires P.T. services. Many times, however, services are discontinued due to a lack of awareness of available services.

The population of elderly individuals is continually growing due to advancements in medicine and technology. Several physiological and psychological changes occur throughout the aging process. Regular physical activity is an effective therapy for slowing the aging process and preventing many of the conditions that occur with aging, such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity, diabetes, depression, and anxiety. In addition, the active individual is more independent and functional in his or her activities of daily living compared to the person who remains sedentary. Prey Selectivity By Naticid Gastropods From Tertiary Sediments Of The United States Coastal Plain, Robert N. Sickler

Previous studies have shown that naticid gastropod predators are highly selective of prey species in accordance with the Kitchell et al. (1981) cost-benefit model. In addition, earlier studies have demonstrated selectivity of drillhole siting and intraspecific prey size. This study focuses on prey selectivity by Oligocene naticid gastropods and is used to test Vermeij's (1987) hypothesis of escalation. The hypothesis of escalation states that biologic hazards have increased during the Phanerozoic and that organisms have either had to adapt to these hazards or face possible extinction (Vermeij, 1987). Developmental Morphology Of Hysterothylacium Dollfusi (Nematoda: Anisakidae) In Paddlefish (Polyodon Spathula) And An Analysis Of The Host-Parasite Relationship, With A Brief Note On Maintenance Of Juvenile Paddlefish., Christopher Anthony Ottinger

To determine the suitability of juvenile paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) as experimental animals, fish were maintained for 154 d in a 378-L aquarium with distilled, deionized water in a flow-through system with a low inflow rate. Un-ionized ammonia levels were higher (median of 7-d mean values = 0.66 mg/L) than is considered optimal for warmwater fish. Weight gain varied from 0.05 to 0.33 g/d. Juvenile paddlefish were fully anesthetized in 4-6 min with tricane at a concentration of 66.1 mg/L. Blood collection was safer and more efficient when the caudal vessels were used rather than cardiac puncture.Sera, macrophages and alimentary canals …

Preserving genetic diversity is important for maintaining the evolutionary potential and fitness of endangered species such as the Hawaiian goose (Branta sandvicensis), or nene. I used DNA fingerprinting to assess genetic diversity in captive nene from Hawaii and England and in wild nene from Hawaii. I used pedigrees and DNA fingerprinting to assess the effects of inbreeding on reproductive success in captive nene. I determined (1) differences in mean similarity coefficients between unrelated and related nene within and between captive colonies and the relationship between coancestry and similarity coefficients in captive nene from Hawaii, (2) differences in mean similarity coefficients …
