Women Who Choose: The Theme Of Mothering In Selected Dramas, Becky K. Becker

Too often, the drama treats mothering as the expected outcome of marriage or as a biological necessity for women. Yet, dramatic texts which address the issue of mothering do exist. This paper examines the unique mothering choices made by the central characters in three dramatic texts: Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal. Ruth Wolff’s The Abdication, and Wendy Wasserstein’s The Heidi Chronicles.

Chapter One introduces the selected theories of Ann Dally, Nancy Chodorow, and Barbara Katz Rothman, theorists whose diverse perceptions concerning mothering converge to provide an analysis of the complexity of mothering choices. Chapters Two through Four include analyses of the three …

Contemporary playwrights, Ruth Wolff and Pam Gems, create portrayals of Queen Christina of Sweden in Wolff’s The Abdication and Gem’s Queen Christina, both of which can be perceived to contain the issues of culturally- encoded gender and sexual roles.

To compare and contrast the influence of these culturally-encoded gender and sexual roles within these plays, I have applied Adrienne Rich’s theory of “compulsory heterosexuality," which serves as a critical tool to clarify the similarities and differences of these issues within the selected dramatic texts. According to Rich, “compulsory heterosexuality” refers to the ideas that male-female coupling is the preferred choice …

Spontaneous Luteolysis In The Cyclic Golden Hamster: Evidence For Mediation Through Inflammation And Apoptosis, Mark W. Rodacker

Mammalian corpora lutea (CL) are transient ovarian glands which function to support pregnancy by secretion of progesterone (P). Sustained P secretion during pregnancy in the hamster requires gonadotrophic support, i.e., follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and prolactin (Prl). Infertile cycles require CL regression. In luteolysis, CL first regress functionally (FL) and then structurally (SL). FL permits the next estrous. Estrous occurs every fourth day in the hamster such that CL form, function briefly, and then regress rapidly and completely. With only one generation of CL present in each ovary at any one time, the hamster is an ideal model for studying …

Mothers' And Fathers' Responses On The Child Behavior Checklist: Are There Systematic Differences?, Ralph E. Casazza

This study examined parental responses on the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), and considered variables that may affect rating reliability. Subjects for the study were 82 matched parent-pairs who completed CBCL protocols on their clinic-referred children. Research variables included parent gender, child gender, and level of item objectivity. The data was analyzed at the CBCL scale (narrowband) and broadband (Externalizing and Internalizing) levels, utilizing analysis of mean differences, repeated-measures analysis of variance, and clinical classification agreement.

Results showed little or no mean difference between mothers' and fathers' scores, but a large degree of discrepancy for parent-pairs was evident. None of the …

The purposes of the study were to determine (a) perceptions of parents about the importance of the national Division for Early Childhood (DEC) family-centered competencies, (b) parent-perceived training needs of early intervention personnel in the area of family-centered services, and (c) the degree of relationship between family- centered competency items perceived by parents as important and items perceived by parents as needed areas of training for early intervention personnel. A three-part survey instrument which incorporated family-centered competence statements from the DEC Compilation of Professional Competencies for Early Intervention Personnel (1992) was used to gather information for this study. Dynamic protein-protein interactions may be a basis for regulation of enzymes that share cross-road metabolites. This type of control could direct metabolites through different pathways depending on which groups of enzymes are associated. Enzymes at the point of convergence of gluconeogenesis, glycolysis and the aspartate-malate shuttle were investigated for interactions. Phosphoenolpyruvate is a product of enolase and a substrate for phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, and pyruvate kinase. Oxalacetate is shared with malate dehydrogenase, aspartate transaminase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase. Guanine nucleotides are shared between nucleoside diphosphate kinase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase.The rabbit liver cytosolic enzymes mentioned above were either purified or commercially purchased to …

The degree to which elementary teachers of North Dakota perceived the "scientific attitudes" aspect of science as an important goal to foster in relation to fostering scientific products and scientific processes was examined. Elementary teachers' receptivity to changing the emphases placed on these aspects of science in their grading practices was documented. The teachers' demographics, science teaching practices, and perceived needs for additional learning related to the different aspects of science, pedagogy, and assessment also were surveyed.A survey instrument developed by the researcher was mailed to 995 elementary teachers in North Dakota. Cellular Precursors Supporting Coronary Vessel Vasculogenesis In The Embryonic Quail Heart., Ann Marie Valder

Little is known concerning origins of vascular precursors and associated regulatory mechanisms involved in intramural coronary vessel vasculogenesis occurring in the subepicardial space of the embryonic vertebrate heart. This process appears to derive from reciprocal tissue interactions between the myocardium, dorsal mesocardium (DM) and continuous epicardium. Epicardial formation in the Japanese quail was investigated using scanning and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy, and light microscopy (LM). In situ indirect immunocytochemistry was utilized with monoclonal antibodies specific for cellular fibronectin, endothelial, and vascular smooth muscle precursors. The purpose of this study was to investigate a method for improving undergraduate science education. The method investigated is called link-teaching. It is the linking of a core science class with a writing class, with the topics covered in the science class being the same topics used for the writing assignments in the writing class. For the purpose of this study a physics class (Natural Phenomena) and an astronomy class were both linked with expository writing classes.The research was done in the context of two theories of learning, Ausubel's Assimilation Theory and Gowin's Theory of Education. The changes in ACL rehabilitation protocol are due to clinical observations and trends in ACL rehabilitation across the country. Electromyographic (EMG) biofeedback is gaining popularity as a treatment modality in physical therapy. It is used in the areas of neurological and orthopedic rehabilitation as well as injury prevention and performance improvement. The use of this modality can aid in the rehabilitation process by identifying weak muscles which need to be strengthened. Physical therapy also utilizes EMG biofeedback to identify and change movement patterns which may contribute to injury through the overuse or incorrect use of various muscles. Large quantities of petrified wood occur in the Paleocene Sentinel Butte Formation in western North Dakota. An examination of this petrified wood has provided information about modes and degrees of fossilization, silica phases present, organic structure preservation, and parent tree type. In the study site, fossilized tree stumps were concentrated along one continuous clay horizon. Twenty petrified wood samples were obtained. Five representative samples were chosen for thin section characterization. Microscopic analyses revealed well preserved plant structures including rays, tracheids, and growth rings. These structures were suitable for identifying parent tree type, which was determined to be a gymnosperm. Silica …

Renwick Reservoir, on the Tongue River near Cavalier, North Dakota, was constructed in 1962 as part of a flood control project. The cost at completion was about $350,000. The reservoir was built assuming a 50-year life expectancy. North Dakota's W ater Quality Assessment Plan concludes that sediment accumulation has already diminished storage capacity and negatively affected recreational uses. Primary problems include pollutants consisting of nutrients, sediment accumulation, turbid water and organic enrichment. Forty-one percent of the sediments deposited are in the newly-formed riparian wetland at the headwaters of the reservoir. This problem illustrates a need to characterize wetlands in reservoirs. …

Manual therapy, though clinically valuable, lacks published research to support efficacy. The purpose of this project was to survey therapists in the U.S. who use manual therapy · in their clinical practice. Methods: All orthopedic clinical specialists (OCS) in the United States (n=325) as recognized by the American Physical Therapy Association's 1993 Directory of Clinical Specialists were sent a survey that contained questions regarding demographics, frequency of documentation, and items included in documentation. . It is widely understood that anabolic steroids and other drugs can be very dangerous. As a result, more and more athletes are seeking safer alternative methods in order to enhance athletic performance. Physical therapists treat patients with wounds. Debridement is one area of wound care which physical therapists frequently perform. Debridement is a particularly difficult skill to learn in the classroom due to the inability to simulate authentic conditions.
