Stereoselective Synthesis Of C-Glycosides Using S-Stabilized Intermediates., Hui Liu Feb 2003

Stereoselective Synthesis Of C-Glycosides Using S-Stabilized Intermediates., Hui Liu

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is focused on the stereoselective synthesis of β- C-glycosides. C-glycosides, including, glucose derivatives, possess a broad array of physiological activity, e.g., enzyme and platelet aggregation inhibition, antibacterial, antitumor and antiviral activity. These carbohydrate derivatives are also important chiral precursors in synthesis of natural products. During recent years, C-glycosides have generated interest as stable mimics of O-glycosides. Numerous synthesis routes have been reported for C-glycosides. However, their stereoselective preparation remains a challenge. Two approaches for the stereoselective preparation of β-C-glucosides was achieved using sulfur-stabilized intermediates. In the first approach, arylsulfenyl chloride (ArSCl) adducts of tri-O-benzyl-D-glucal were converted to a …

The Characterization Of The Expression And The Function Of Slrps In The Human Sclera., Janell Mae Johnson Feb 2003

The Characterization Of The Expression And The Function Of Slrps In The Human Sclera., Janell Mae Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The collagenous network of the extracellular matrix (ECM) contributes to the strength and organization of connective tissues. Interspersed among this collagenous network, are a number of tissue specific proteoglycans (PG's) that are thought to guide matrix assembly and organization through protein/protein and/or protein/carbohydrate interactions. In recent literature, attention has been focused on a small leucine rich PG family (SLRPS) found to bind a variety of ECM components via their core proteins. The family is made up of nine members including: decorin, biglycan, lumican, fibromodulin, proline arginine end leucine rich repeat protein (PRELP), keratocan, chondroadherin, epiphycan, and osteoglycin. Recent studies have …

Characterization And Role Of Lumican In Scleral Extracellular Matrix., Bobbie Ann Austin Jan 2003

Characterization And Role Of Lumican In Scleral Extracellular Matrix., Bobbie Ann Austin

Theses and Dissertations

Changes in scleral extracellular matrix, which is composed of proteins including glycoproteins, proteoglycans, and collagen, allow axial elongation of the eye resulting in myopia. Theoretically, changes in any scleral component could result in changes leading to increased axial length. The purpose of this study is to characterize and study the function of one protein found in scleral extracellular matrix, lumican.

White Racial Identification As A Predictor Of Prejudice In Simulated Criminal Sentencing., Scott David Guldseth Jan 2003

White Racial Identification As A Predictor Of Prejudice In Simulated Criminal Sentencing., Scott David Guldseth

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to assess the validity of the White Racial Identity Attitude Scale (WRIAS: Helms & Carter, 1990) and Modem Racism Scale (MRS: McConahay, Hardee & Batts, 1981) in the prediction of discriminatory behavior. These measures were hypothesized to predict prejudiced behavior associated with simulated criminal sentencing as reflected in the Criminal Justice Questionnaire (CJQ) developed for purposes of the present study. The CJQ was administered on two occasions separated by a one month interval. Descriptions are given for six crimes (shoplifting, robbery, DWI, murder, rape, and child molestation) and the perpetrator race is manipulated in a …

Multi-Reference Electronic Structure Techniques And Their Application To Important Atmospheric Molecules., Timothy James Dudley Jan 2003

Multi-Reference Electronic Structure Techniques And Their Application To Important Atmospheric Molecules., Timothy James Dudley

Theses and Dissertations

While electronic structure methods that are able to describe accurately excited states exist (e.g., MRCI), they are often prohibitively expensive for all but the smallest systems (i.e., up to three atom systems with a moderate-sized basis set). This is because the inclusion of dynamic electron correlation, which is necessary for obtaining accurate energies and often required for obtaining reliable geometries, is computationally demanding. Since reactions typically involve more than three atoms, techniques able to describe excited states and include dynamic correlation in a much more computationally reasonable fashion than MRCI are highly desirable. Multi-reference perturbation theories (MRPT) are able to …

Physics is fundamental for science, engineering, medicine, and for understanding many phenomena encountered in people’s daily lives. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between student success in college-level introductory physics courses and various educational and background characteristics. The primary variables of this study were gender, high school mathematics and science preparation, preference and perceptions of learning physics, and performance in introductory physics courses. Demographic characteristics considered were age, student grade level, parents’ occupation and level of education, high school senior grade point average, and educational goals. A Survey of Learning Preference and Perceptions was developed to …

Social Integration Of Hispanic Adolescents In A Predominately White Public School., Terri L. Eide Jan 2003

Social Integration Of Hispanic Adolescents In A Predominately White Public School., Terri L. Eide

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify those factors that affect the social integration of Hispanic adolescents in a predominately white public school. The sample includes seventh through twelfth grade students (N = 954) in two school districts located in small size Midwest cities. Subjects completed a questionnaire about themselves, their family and their educational experiences. Survey items specifically addressed the student’s sense of belonging to the school environment, their perceptions o f peers and school staff, their social involvement in school-sponsored activities, substance use, and experiences of being bullied. Factor analysis reduced the 64-item survey to eight dependent …

Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond Jan 2003

Copper Deficiency In Hl-60 Cells Increases Their Susceptibility To Apoptosis When Treated With Antioxidants., Laura Jean Raymond

Theses and Dissertations

The location and function of the electron transport chain render the mitochondria the primary source for potentially damaging reactive oxygen species in aerobic cells. Normally, the concentration of superoxide anion in mitochondria is controlled, at least in part, by the sequential action of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. However, when the terminal steps of the electron transport are impaired or inhibited, superoxide anion production may rise to levels that overwhelm the normal protective enzymes. Studies have shown that copper deficiency causes a reduction in the activity of cytochrome-c oxidase, the copper dependent, terminal respiratory complex of the electron transport chain. …

An Electromyographic Analysis Of The Abdominal Musculature In The Production Of Vocalization Intensity During Singing, Chris Huravitch, Nyle Relay, Kristine Schulte Jan 2003

An Electromyographic Analysis Of The Abdominal Musculature In The Production Of Vocalization Intensity During Singing, Chris Huravitch, Nyle Relay, Kristine Schulte

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

The purpose of this study was to determine if a relationship existed between electromyographical (EMG) activity in the abdominal muscles and the intensity of sound production. Currently, no consensus existsin the music profession regarding the appropriate use of the abdominal muscles during singing, even though it is known that the abdominal muscles playa significant role in sound production. As musicians strive to improve performance and therapists work to rehabilitate musicians and others who suffer from vocal deficits, understanding the basic muscular requirements of this activity/profession is essential to affect positive outcomes.

Eleven subjects with choral experience were recruited from the …

Thirty Endangered Languages In The Philippines, Thomas N. Headland Jan 2003

Thirty Endangered Languages In The Philippines, Thomas N. Headland

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

There are 6,809 languages spoken in the world today. Conservative estimates are that the world's languages are currently dying at the rate of at least two languages each month, and linguists predict that most of today's languages will die out in the next 100 years. Since 1962, the author has been gathering field data on some of the smallest language groups in the world-the Philippine Negritos. This paper will explain why the thirty-plus Negrito languages in the Philippines are endangered, and what the projected future is for these numerically tiny post-foraging societies in the 21st century. The argument will be …
