Self Concept And Gender Identity Differences In Children's Opposite-Sex And Same-Sex Friendships, Erin M. Rooks
Self Concept And Gender Identity Differences In Children's Opposite-Sex And Same-Sex Friendships, Erin M. Rooks
Theses and Dissertations
Opposite-sex friendships are an area of continued study for children especially in regards to the type of children who encompass opposite-sex friendships and the differences that they have over children who do not, specifically in regards to gender identity and self-concept. Self-concept and gender identity differences were examined in this study between third and fourth grade children (N = 41) who have one or more opposite-sex friendships and those children who have only same-sex friendships. Participants were from an area school in the Midwest with a population of approximately 10,000 people. Participants were asked to make a list of children …

The Peripheral And Central Auditory Performance Of A Child With Brachmann-De Lange Syndrome, Anne R. Burgard
The Peripheral And Central Auditory Performance Of A Child With Brachmann-De Lange Syndrome, Anne R. Burgard
Theses and Dissertations
This study evaluated the peripheral and central auditory performance of a 13 year-old male with Brachmann-de Lange Syndrome (BdLS). Clinical, behavioral, and peripheral audiometric tests, and a central auditory processing test battery consisting of seven subtests were administered. The results from the peripheral tests and central auditory processing test battery are reported. This study provides a detailed profile of the auditory performance of one individual with BdLS. In addition, it contributes to the limited literature available on hearing as a characteristic of Brachmann-de Lange Syndrome. The results of this study also provide useful information about the hearing characteristics of a …

Isolated Ventricular Myocyte Contractile Function Is Depressed In Rats Fed High Fat And/Or Marginally Copper -Deficient Diets., David P. Relling
Theses and Dissertations
Obesity is influenced by dietary consumption of fat while much of the population consumes a diet deficient of the trace mineral copper. Obesity and copper deficiency can alter cardiovascular function; including cardiac hypertrophy, increased myocyte lipid droplet volume, and cardiac contractile depression. Interestingly, lipotoxic dysfunction is characterized by many of the same mechanistic alterations that are observed in obesity and copper deficiency. Additionally, the sphingolipid ceramide is elevated in lipotoxic dysfunction. However, functional leptin:leptin receptor signaling prevents lipotoxic dysfunction. The purpose of my dissertation was to determine the role of a high fat and marginal copper deficient diet on cardiac …
Coping With Infertility: A Qualitative Study Of The Infertile Experience And How Others Can Help, Carolyn A. Senchuk-Lavergne
Coping With Infertility: A Qualitative Study Of The Infertile Experience And How Others Can Help, Carolyn A. Senchuk-Lavergne
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study is to qualitatively examine the experience of infertility from the individual's perspective and how friends, family, and counselors can assist these individuals. Six individuals were surveyed about their experiences concerning their infertility. The male and female partners were surveyed individually in order to preserve the phenomenological nature of the study. Results showed that the experience of infertility was consistently identified in five domains: infertility decreases self-worth, it is all-encompassing, the downfall of treatments, angry and resentful feelings, and concern for spouse. Support systems were identified in three domains: friends/family, outside resources, and counseling. This …

Status Of Migratory Shorebirds At An Inland Stopover Site In The Northern Plains Prairie Pothole Region, Corinne A. Carey
Status Of Migratory Shorebirds At An Inland Stopover Site In The Northern Plains Prairie Pothole Region, Corinne A. Carey
Theses and Dissertations
Teeming with macroinvertebrates, hundreds of tiny wetlands dotting the prairie region of North Dakota provide nutrient rich foraging sites for large numbers of migratory shorebirds. Because these wetlands are typically small, dispersed and ephemeral, documentation of shorebird numbers in the region has been a difficult task. Large variation in survey data has resulted in an overall underestimate in the value of this shorebird habitat.
To assess the status of local migratory shorebirds, I conducted weekly shorebird surveys at eight sites within Kelly's Slough National Wildlife Refuge. These surveys included a bi-weekly inventory of resident invertebrates, a well established prey base …
