Hate: Juror Perceptions Of Crime Classification, Attributions Of Blame, And Impact Of Extra-Legal Factors, Karyn M. Plumm Aug 2006

Hate: Juror Perceptions Of Crime Classification, Attributions Of Blame, And Impact Of Extra-Legal Factors, Karyn M. Plumm

Theses and Dissertations

A jury simulation paradigm was employed in this series of studies exploring hate crime. In the first two studies., crime label (i.e., bias-motivated assault ·vs. first degree assault) and victim gender were varied within the context of a sexual orientation motivated (study 1) or gender motivated (study 2) hate crime scenario. Results from the first study indicated that attributions of blame against the victim varied as a function of participants' attitudes toward minority sexual orientation. Results of study two indicated that participants in the assault condition were more likely to find the defendant guilty than those in the hate crime …

Contextual And Mediating Factors In Body Image Dissatisfaction, Kiri A. Faul Aug 2006

Contextual And Mediating Factors In Body Image Dissatisfaction, Kiri A. Faul

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the specific nature of the interaction and contribution of variables related to body image in a nonclinical population using a path analysis. This paper discusses various theoretical models and variables in the development and maintenance of body image dissatisfaction and eating concerns. Several variables and personality traits have been suggested as etiological factors in the development of body image dissatisfaction. These variables stem from different theoretical models. The five theoretical models discussed are: (1) Developmental, (2) Social-comparison, (3), Self-discrepancy, (4) Self-objectification, and (5) Feminist theory. From these broad theoretical models, many variables …

Writing System Development And Reform: A Process, Elke Karan Aug 2006

Writing System Development And Reform: A Process, Elke Karan

Theses and Dissertations

Orthography issues are complex. Although literature about writing systems has flourished in recent years, issues which preoccupy practitioners involved in orthography design or reform are rarely addressed.

This thesis provides an overview of theory relating to establishing orthographies for unwritten languages and modifying existing systems. It presents principles and recommendations which favor popular acceptance and successful implementation. Introductory chapters explain the recent increased interest in orthography, define terms, introduce pertinent literature, and give an overview of writing system typology. Remaining chapters present linguistic and non-linguistic factors which influence orthography decisions, examine writing system adaptation options, discuss orthography testing, consider motivations …

Prevalence Of The Metabolic Syndrome In A Midwestern Community, Hanna R. Thomas

Theses and Dissertations

The metabolic syndrome (MS) has been linked to a significantly higher risk of heart disease and diabetes. It affects approximately 25% of Americans today with its prevalence continuing to increase as the population becomes heavier and more sedentary. With Pender’s Health Promotion model as a theoretical base, this study examined the prevalence of the risk factors, preventative and treatment measures for the metabolic syndrome among a Midwestern North American population. A non-experimental secondary data analysis comparative survey design approach was used through a chart review of 101 male patient charts and 101 female patient charts. Significance was established at p …

The Effect Of Repeated Visual Or Verbal Worry On Thought Intrusions And Habituation, Jessica C. White Plume Aug 2006

The Effect Of Repeated Visual Or Verbal Worry On Thought Intrusions And Habituation, Jessica C. White Plume

Theses and Dissertations

The avoidance model of worry proposes that verbal and visual cognitive activi ty serve to maintain or reduce worry, respectively. The present study tested this model in a laboratory setting. One-hundred one undergraduate college students (77 female, 24 male; mean age = 20.55 years) identified as high or low worriers underwent two fifteen-minute sessions of visually imagining, or verbally thinking about, personally relevant worry topics. Outcome measures included post-exposure thought intrusions, and psychophysiological and subjective arousal. As expected, high worriers reported higher subjective anxiety and more negative thought intrusions throughout the experiment. Visual exposure did not reduce negative thought intrusions …

Ligand-Induced Conformational Changes Of Extracellular Loop Two In The Dopamine Transporter, Jon D. Gaffaney Jun 2006

Ligand-Induced Conformational Changes Of Extracellular Loop Two In The Dopamine Transporter, Jon D. Gaffaney

Theses and Dissertations

The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a transmembrane spanning protein responsible for the clearance of dopamine from the dopaminergic synapse. Uptake blockers such as cocaine inhibit transport resulting in elevated levels of dopamine in the synapse. DAT is predicted to contain twelve transmembrane spanning domains (TMs) connected by alternating intra- and extracellular loops, however, the spatial arrangement of these regions is unknown. Extracellular loop 2 (EL2) is composed of approximately 80 amino acids and connects TM3 and TM4, two regions associated with uptake blocker binding. Using limited proteolysis we analyzed the aqueous accessibility of EL2 in the presence or absence of …

The Relationship Of Social Capital To High -Risk Behavior Engagement By High School Students, Erin M. Curran Jun 2006

The Relationship Of Social Capital To High -Risk Behavior Engagement By High School Students, Erin M. Curran

Theses and Dissertations

Social capital theory suggests that there are assets inherent in social relations that may be used to facilitate enhanced social, cultural, economic, and education outcomes for individuals and groups. More specifically, this theory can be extended to include those relational investments in youth that may serve to enhance their developmental, social, and educational outcomes. Proponents of social capital theory have asserted that youth with increased access to social capital may be less likely to exhibit social and behavioral difficulties. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social capital and engagement in high-risk behaviors (including substance use, …

The Characterization And Distribution Of Renshaw Cells In The Rat Spinal Cord, Richard A. Zaruba Jun 2006

The Characterization And Distribution Of Renshaw Cells In The Rat Spinal Cord, Richard A. Zaruba

Theses and Dissertations

There is an abundance of electrophysiological and pharmacological data describing Renshaw cells (RC), however comparatively little is known about their distribution, metabolism, ionic regulation, modulation or exact role in motor behaviors. In this dissertation enzyme histochemistry and immunohistochemistry in conjunction with light, fluorescent and confocal microscopic methodologies were used to address the hypothesis that "the distribution of RC is contingent on their functional role in specific α motoneuronal pools and their unique electrophysiological and functional characteristics are reflected by their neurochemistry and synaptic inputs." The highest concentration of RC (number of RC per mm2) was found in the thoracic region …
