Development And Validation Of The Coping, Alcohol/Drugs, And Trauma Scale (Cats), Patricia J. Hunter Dec 2006

Development And Validation Of The Coping, Alcohol/Drugs, And Trauma Scale (Cats), Patricia J. Hunter

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to develop and investigate the validity of a coping scale (Coping, Alcohol/Drugs, and Trauma Scale; CATS), which could be used to predict problematic alcohol and drug (AOD) use patterns among college women, based upon historical stressors. It was predicted that the CATS would have strong convergent validity with the Michigan Alcohol Screening Test-Revised (MAST-R), moderately strong convergent validity with the Coping Response Inventory - Avoidant Scale (CRI- Avoidant), and moderate convergent validity with the Traumatic Events Questionnaire (TEQ). Additionally, the CATS was expected to have strong correlations to binge drinking as measured by the Khavari Alcohol …

Funny Ha-Ha Or Funny Strange: The Structure And Meaning Of Laughter In Conversation, Linda Houts-Smith Dec 2006

Funny Ha-Ha Or Funny Strange: The Structure And Meaning Of Laughter In Conversation, Linda Houts-Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Although laughter has been studied for centuries, the work has occurred in several different fields, and the lack of an interdisciplinary approach has hindered the integration of results. Work in philosophy has focused on why we laugh but has lacked a basis in empirical data, resulting in ungrounded theories. Studies in neuroscience and linguistics rest on empirical data, but stop short of a full description of the phenomenon of laughter, focusing on when and how we laugh, but not why. This study seeks to describe the phenomenon of laughter more fully, to describe both the nature of the laughable and …

North Dakota Dual Credit: Initial Impact 1997-2004, Anita K. Decker Dec 2006

North Dakota Dual Credit: Initial Impact 1997-2004, Anita K. Decker

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of enrollment in North Dakota’s dual credit program on the students who had been enrolled from Fall 1997 through Spring 2004. Participants are identified by gender, by year in school, by courses taken for dual credit, and by high school size. Analysis of post-high school college entry data by matriculation, graduation, and grade point average are included.

Dual credit students took over 12,000 courses from the eleven public colleges in the North Dakota University System and from five nonpublic or out-of-state colleges. Students were divided between seniors, who took 9836 …

The Role Of Boron In The Regulation Of Inflammation: Studies In Vivo And In Vitro, Kelly Ann Durick Nov 2006

The Role Of Boron In The Regulation Of Inflammation: Studies In Vivo And In Vitro, Kelly Ann Durick

Theses and Dissertations

I demonstrated here that the presence of physiological amounts of boron was able to prevent the onset of and ameliorate ongoing collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). I also show a mechanism for boron's anti-inflammatory properties, in that boron was able to down regulate a number of pro-inflammatory mediators, all of which are under transcriptional control of NF-κB. Boron-supplemented diets, 2.0 mg B/kg and 12 mg B/kg, rendered CIA susceptible mice significantly more resistant to the onset of clinical arthritis, compared to mice fed boron-deficient chow, or commercial rodent chow. Dietary boron supplementation was also shown to prevent the onset of experimental autoimmune …

Laboratory -Induced Aggression Among Participants With And Without A History Of Alcohol -Related Aggression, Matthew D. Bailly Nov 2006

Laboratory -Induced Aggression Among Participants With And Without A History Of Alcohol -Related Aggression, Matthew D. Bailly

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of alcohol-related and mixed alcohol and non-alcohol-related histories of aggression on aggressive responding in the laboratory were investigated using the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP). Forty-five male college students were selected for participation in the present study using a questionnaire consisting of modified items from the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI; Buss & Durkee, 1957) and Overt Aggression Scale (OAS; Yudofsky et al., 1986) that allowed for assignment to an alcohol-related, mixed, or no history of aggression control condition. Participants performed four 25-minute PSAP sessions in sequence during one laboratory visit. The short version of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality …

Social Anxiety And The Recognition Of Auditory And Visual Emotional Cues, Ryan D. Hartmann Nov 2006

Social Anxiety And The Recognition Of Auditory And Visual Emotional Cues, Ryan D. Hartmann

Theses and Dissertations

Cognitive theory attributes social anxiety to a host of perceptual biases that transform harmless interpersonal stimuli into threats. Socially anxious college students were expected to misinterpret visual and auditory cues of emotion in others more readily than their more confident counterparts. This group of socially anxious men and women were also expected to perceive negative emotion from visual and auditory cues that were determined to be neutral or positive through an external validation process. A total of 16 participants were assigned into each of the four cells of this 2 (gender) by 2 (Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale-Self Report median split) …

Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch Nov 2006

Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch

Theses and Dissertations

Persistence is the ability of a small fraction of bacteria (one-in-a-million) to survive antibiotic exposure, yet the survivors are as susceptible to antibiotic as the parental cells. "High persistence" in Escherichia coli is linked to mutations in hipA, the toxin entity of the toxin-antitoxin module hipBA. The wild type hipA gene encodes a "toxin" while hipB encodes a DNA-binding protein that autoregulates hip operon expression and binds to HipA to nullify its effects. The hipA7 allele confers persistence to 1:100 cells and serves as a model system to study persistence. Wild-type HipA, when in excess of HipB, causes culture growth …

Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Actin Polymerization: Pathophysiological Implications And Relations To Portal Hypertensive Conditions, Xuesong Chen Nov 2006

Regulation Of Vascular Smooth Muscle Actin Polymerization: Pathophysiological Implications And Relations To Portal Hypertensive Conditions, Xuesong Chen

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic portal hypertension is an end-state clinical condition associated with cirrhosis and other diseases that elevate portal vascular resistance. An intriguing vascular consequence of chronic portal hypertension is impaired vasoconstrictor function which favors a chronically vasodilated condition. This vasoconstrictor dysfunction has been linked to prolonged activation of protein kinase A (PKA). However the cellular mechanism(s) responsible for the altered vasoconstrictor function is still not clear. The present studies tested my hypothesis that PKA mediates impaired vasoconstrictor function by affecting the actin filament dynamics via two small heat shock proteins, HSP20 and HSP27. Studies were conducted in isolated small mesenteric arteries …
