Workplace violence is increasing in the healthcare and emergency department (ED) violence is escalating to the point where nurses experience violent assaults at 12 times the national average (U. S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2008). The Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) conducted a survey of over 3,000 emergency nurses and found 86% of those surveyed had encountered physical violence within the last three years (Emergency Nurses Association [ENA], 2008) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (2011) and the Joint Commission (2010) require healthcare facilities to organize a plan to provide for the safety and security of employees and …

Suicide is a national public health concern which can result in emotional and physical devastation for individuals, families, and communities. Suicide leads to unanswered questions for families and communities directly impacted by suicide. There are approximately 30,000 suicidal deaths nationally in the United States; however in the American Indian population the suicide rate is 1.7 times higher than all races in the United States (Wexler & Gone, 2012). Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the 15-24 age groups in the American Indian/Alaskan Native (AVAN) population. This literature review evaluated suicidal ideation among adolescent and young adults with eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN) and binge eating disorder (BED) along with the association of gender, psychological comorbidities, self-injurious behaviors, family systems and cultural implications. Eating disorders, with co-occurring psychological comorbidities tend to have a higher incidence of suicidal intent and self-injurious behaviors. For example eating disorders with a comorbidity of depression tend to have a higher association with suicide attempts. Eating disorders who exhibit suicidal ideation need to have prompt attention. In order to compete in a global economy, employees across the United States are forced into shift work in increasing numbers. Shift workers often encounter health concerns not faced by those who work normal hours, including sleep disturbances, mental health issues, and injuries related to fatigue and exhaustion. The aim of this paper was to identify issues faced by shift workers, particularly nurses. Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most common chronic diseases seen in ambulatory care. It is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, and heart failure. According to the recent statistical facts on high blood pressure, 67 million American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure costs the nation$ 47.5 billion annually in direct medical expenses and$ 3.5 billion each year in lost productivity. About half (47%) of people with the disease have their condition under control (Centers for Disease and Prevention).

Depression is one of the most prevalent disabling diseases affecting millions of people around the world. Many depressed individuals also suffer from co-morbid conditions that complicate treatment of their depression. Joe is a 65 year old male being seen for fatigue and a PHQ-9 score of 10. Initiation of treatment for depression was commenced with the serotonin reuptake inhibitor, sertraline. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRis) are first line medications for the treatment of depression.
