Inorganic Arsenite [I-As (Iii)] Represses Human Renal Progenitor Cell Characteristics And Induces Neoplastic-Like Transformation, Md Ehsanul Haque Jan 2025

Inorganic Arsenite [I-As (Iii)] Represses Human Renal Progenitor Cell Characteristics And Induces Neoplastic-Like Transformation, Md Ehsanul Haque

Theses and Dissertations

Studies on populations exposed to inorganic arsenic (iAs) have shown an association between this particular exposure and the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). However, there are few studies addressing how acute exposure of the human kidney to iAs might lead to long-term alterations that might lead to CKD or RCC. This study’s hypothesis is that renal exposure to iAs might alter the renal cells responsible for the repair and regeneration of nephrons damaged by iAs exposure or other renal toxicants. The kidney possesses a minority epithelial cell population that co-express PROM1 and CD24 that …

Evaluation Of Schlafen Family Proteins In Triple Negative Breast Cancer, Savannah Brown

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the role of Schlafen (SLFN) family proteins in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), a subtype known for its aggressive behavior and poor response to treatment. Through a series of studies, this dissertation examines the interplay between multiple SLFN proteins, chemotherapy resistance, and immune modulation, revealing the potential of SLFN12 as both a biomarker and therapeutic target for improving treatment outcomes, particularly in overcoming chemoresistance in TNBC.

Breast cancer, the most common cancer worldwide, includes various subtypes like TNBC, which lacks estrogen, progesterone, and HER2 receptors, making it resistant to conventional therapies. SLFN proteins, first discovered in mice, regulate …

Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity And Adaptive Responses In Renal Progenitor Cells: Molecular Insights From Transcriptomic And Proteomic Analyses, Eloho Ighofose Jan 2025

Cisplatin-Induced Nephrotoxicity And Adaptive Responses In Renal Progenitor Cells: Molecular Insights From Transcriptomic And Proteomic Analyses, Eloho Ighofose

Theses and Dissertations

Cisplatin is a widely used chemotherapeutic agent known for its efficacy against various solid tumors, but its clinical utility is limited by dose-dependent nephrotoxicity. The renal proximal tubule, particularly its epithelial cell population, is highly susceptible to cisplatin-induced injury due to its role in solute transport and high metabolic activity. Recent advances suggest that renal progenitor cells play a key role in epithelial repair following nephrotoxic injury; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying their response to cisplatin remain poorly understood. This study investigates the impact of both acute and chronic cisplatin exposure on immortalized human renal progenitor cells (HRTPT, CD24⁺/CD133⁺) using a …

The Effects Wind Has On Ocean Current Speeds For Marine Renewable Energy Applications, Parkerjay Hoaglund, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

This paper explores the influence of wind on ocean current speeds at varying depths and its implications for marine renewable energy systems, particularly underwater turbines. By analyzing the fluid mechanics of ocean currents and applying the Navier-Stokes equations under simplified assumptions, velocity and pressure profiles were developed to model the interaction between wind and water. The research highlights the dependence of ocean current velocity on wind speed and depth, demonstrating that maximum current speeds and power generation potential occur near the ocean surface. Using MATLAB simulations, power generation by an underwater turbine was analyzed under varying wind speeds and depths, …

Effects Of Pollution On The Flow Of The Gowanus Canal, Eleanore Dzija, Carson Running Dec 2024

Effects Of Pollution On The Flow Of The Gowanus Canal, Eleanore Dzija, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

This paper explores how pollution affects the flow of the Gowanus Canal. Four scenarios are modeled to represent different phases of pollution remediation: no remediation, dredging and capping of the canal bottom, combined sewer overflow capture, and dredging and capping with combined sewer overflow capture. Dredging and capping of the canal bottom resulted in the greatest increase in velocity. Dredging and capping with combined sewer overflow capture resulted in the greatest decrease in pressure. This indicates that dredging and capping of the canal bottom may be the most efficient pollution remediation strategy and should be the focus of the cleanup …

The Effect Of Temperature On Power Output From A Hydroelectric Penstock, Taylor Hartell, Carson Running Dec 2024

The Effect Of Temperature On Power Output From A Hydroelectric Penstock, Taylor Hartell, Carson Running

Mechanical Engineering Student Publications

Hydroelectric power is a form of renewable energy that uses the power from water to generate electricity. One of the ways this is done is by diverting water from a river with a penstock leading to a turbine. Hydroelectric systems rely on water as the source of power, and the viscosity of water varies with temperature. When temperatures are low, viscosity is high, and when temperatures are high, viscosity is low. Other works have studied the optimal dimensions of penstocks for power generation and the effect of hydroelectric power on river temperatures. In this research, the effect of temperature on …

Investigation Of Real-Time Gaseous Thermal Decomposition Products Of Representative Per- And Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Pfas), Kateřina Litvanová, Bethany Klemetstrud, Feng Xiao, Alena Kubatova

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The thermal decomposition of per- and poly fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) is poorly understood. Here, we present an innovative, comprehensive analytical method to investigate their thermal decomposition, including perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), alcohol, sulfonates, and GenX (acid dimer), focusing on identifying their breakdown products. In this study, evolved gas analysis–mass spectrometry (EGA-MS) was used for fast real-time screening to determine the significant temperatures to be investigated with the thermal desorption-pyrolysis coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (TD-Py-GC-MS), which provided detailed information about evolved PFAS and their breakdown products. This approach enabled a systematic study of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) ranging from C3 to …

Spectrometric Detection Of Microplastics In The Environment: A Novel Approach Using Hyperspectral Imaging System, Mansurat Abdulmalik Ali Dec 2024

Spectrometric Detection Of Microplastics In The Environment: A Novel Approach Using Hyperspectral Imaging System, Mansurat Abdulmalik Ali

Theses and Dissertations

Microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles ranging from 1 μm to 5 mm, have emerged as one of the significant environmental contaminants due to their widespread presence in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. MPs originate from primary sources, such as industrial pre-production pellets and microbeads in personal care products, or secondary sources, such as the breakdown of larger plastic particles. Their persistence in the environment is due to their resistance to degradation and capacity to transport toxic substances and pathogens. These characteristics raise concerns about their ecological impacts and potential entry into food chains, ultimately affecting human health. Despite extensive research …

Exploring The Potential Of Hybrid Wind-Solar Energy Systems For Residential Applications In North Dakota, Toluwase Testimony Omojiba

Theses and Dissertations

North Dakota's high residential energy consumption, driven by extreme weather, is largely met by fossil fuels, contributing significantly to CO₂ emissions. This study evaluates the technical performance, environmental benefits, and economic viability of hybrid wind-solar-energy systems for residential applications in the state.

Using HOMER modeling, two scenarios were analyzed: homes using a combination of utility gas and electricity, and homes relying solely on electricity. Simulations for Grand Forks, Bismarck, and Dickinson showed that hybrid systems reliably met residential energy demand, covering 100% of the annual load in the gas-electric scenario across all locations. In the all-electric scenario, systems achieved at …
