A Q-Methodological Study Of The Kubler-Ross Stage Theory, Anne M. Metzger
A Q-Methodological Study Of The Kubler-Ross Stage Theory, Anne M. Metzger
Theses and Dissertations
Kubler-Ross (1969) identified a progression through stages of denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance as a completion of the dying process. These stages are encompassed by feelings of hope which extend throughout the course of illness. The present study was designed to investigate the correspondence between the stage changes hypothesized by the Kubler-Ross theory and the perception of the course of illness by seriously ill patients and their spouse. An additional focus of the study was an evaluation of Q-methodology as a research procedure with the terminally ill.
A thirty-six item structured Q-sort was administered on two occasions to …

An Investigation Of Phonetic Symbolism, Joann K. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the present study was to investigate the patterning of phonetic symbolism of selected vowels and consonants and the effect on that patterning of selected personal attributes of the subjects making the judgements of phonetic symbolism.
Forty parents and forty unmarried college students participated in the study. The subjects were required to complete two experiments involving forced-choice judgements of the phonetic symbolism of nonsense syllables with regard to ten aspects of meaning presented as the following antonymic pairs of words: Hot-Cold, Light-Heavy, Beautiful-Ugly, Quiet- Noisy, High-Low, Large-Smal1, Slow-Fast, Good-Bad, Hard-Soft, and Strong- Weak .
Chi-Square was applied to …
Dependency Attachment And Exploration: Their Interrelationships In One-Year-Old Children, Elizabeth S. Baraga
Dependency Attachment And Exploration: Their Interrelationships In One-Year-Old Children, Elizabeth S. Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
Attachment and dependency are two important related infant-mother relationships which develop in the first year of life. Attachment has been defined as an affectional bond that one person forms to another specific individual which is both discriminating and enduring. Dependency, on the other hand, has been defined as a class of behaviors learned in the context of the infant's dependency relationship with his mother, reinforced in the course of her care of him and generalized to other caretakers. Operationally, attachment has been defined by proximity- seeking while dependency has been defined by attention-seeking. The purpose of the present study was …
A Comparison Of Conservation Training Procedures And A Proposed Criterion For Diagnosing The Presence Of Conservation Of Weight, David R. Anderson
A Comparison Of Conservation Training Procedures And A Proposed Criterion For Diagnosing The Presence Of Conservation Of Weight, David R. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Sixty first and second grade students were administered Piagetian conservation of weight tasks utilizing materials from the Goldschmid-Bentler Concept Assessment Kit. Ten natural conservers , and fifty nonconservers and partial conservers were identified . The nonconservers and partial conservers were assigned to a no-training control group or one of four training groups where the training procedures were based on invariant quantity principles, reversibility principles, compensation principles, or direct verbal reinforcement. The natural conservers constituted a second control group which did not participate in the training phase of the study . Following training, all subjects were administered a conservation of weight …
The Literary Achievement Of Esquire Magazine During The Great Depression, Clarence Adolph Bina
The Literary Achievement Of Esquire Magazine During The Great Depression, Clarence Adolph Bina
Theses and Dissertations
Although Esquire has been in publication for forty-one years, few attempts at serious critical evaluation of its merit as a popular culture magazine or its significance as a literary magazine have been made. Because it was a magazine which confronted the major political, moral, and aesthetic issues of the 1930's and because it established a new type of male entertainment magazine characterized by literary and sexual sophistication, such serious critical evaluation is crucial to an understanding of life and literature of the Great Depression.
For quantitative information I went to the magazine itself, reading every issue from 1933 through 1941. …

Three Dimensions Of The Parental Role In Selected Childrens' Literature 1950-1974, Paula Reigh Boothby
Three Dimensions Of The Parental Role In Selected Childrens' Literature 1950-1974, Paula Reigh Boothby
Theses and Dissertations
In this study the conceptualization of the parental, role in selected children's books was analyzed. The analysis of the parenting figure (i.e., the character who undertook the care and responsibility of the child for a continuous length of time) was accomplished using the following three dimensions: (1) Need-Gratification and Control, (2) Stimulation-Maturity, (3) Affection-Emotional Interchange.
The sample consisted of twenty-six books representing txjo time periods 1950-1960 (Early Period) and 1964-1974 (Later Period) equally. A comparison between these two periods was made in view of changes in the characterization of the parenting role. This included looking at the above three dimensions …
Touching In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Cassandra L. Tyson
Touching In Psychotherapy: A Case Study, Cassandra L. Tyson
Theses and Dissertations
There is a wide range of opinion among psychotherapists as to the appropriateness of physical contact between therapist and client. Some suggest that touching facilitates the development of the therapeutic relationship; others, however, argue that potentially harmful effects far outweigh possible benefits.
In the present case study, touching was manipulated using an ABA reversal design during each of four initial meetings of a male therapist and female client. Dependent measures included therapist and client immediacy and speech production, and client self-disclosure. Time series data for each dependent measure were examined to determine whether client and/or therapist behavior changed in response …

The Effectiveness Of Different Methods For The Control Of Muscle Tension, Carmen Rita Kaimann
The Effectiveness Of Different Methods For The Control Of Muscle Tension, Carmen Rita Kaimann
Theses and Dissertations
Several methods of training in muscle control are utilized, singly or concurrently, to facilitate tension reduction in both student and clinical populations. Electromyographic methods involving audio and/or visual feedback, verbal instructions in tension- relaxation exercises, and autogenic suggestions are the three most common procedures employed to reduce muscle tension. However, several studies in this area (Paul, 1969 ; Cleaves, 1970; Haynes, 1974) have shown conflicting results regarding the effectiveness of the various methods of muscle control training. Psychologists, such as Green, Green, and Walters (1970) interested in utilizing biofeedback procedures have made clinical applications combining some form of verbal instruction …

A Study To Determine The Effects Of A Perceptual-Motor Program Upon The Improvement Of Motor Skills And The Enhancement Of Self-Concepts Of Primary School Children, Grades One Through Three, Thomas G. Hall
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study wa3 to determine whether a perceptual-motor program, conducted by primary classroom teachers, could improve not only children*3 motor skills, but also enhance their self-concept.
Two hundred and thirty-four children in grades one, two, and three, from the Great Palls Public School District, were divided into two groups, experimental (N=121) and control (N=113). The experimental group received eight weeks of treatment (a perceptual-motor program) on a daily basis from their classroom teacher who themselves had received twelve to sixteen hours of in-service instruction in perceptual-motor training. The control group continued to receive physical education instruction from …
Personality Needs And Patterns Of Friendship, Robert J. Bateen
Personality Needs And Patterns Of Friendship, Robert J. Bateen
Theses and Dissertations
Several approaches to the study of friendship based on Murray’s (1938) need model have been suggested. Winch (1955) proposed that a person who is high on one need would be attracted to another who is high on a complementary need. Izard (1960a) failed to support Winch's hypothesis but found instead that friends tended to have similar needs. Izard suggested that people who were striving for the same goals could engage in mutual need satisfaction and would therefore be attracted.
Since need satisfaction is a theme common to both Winch's and Izard's approaches, the current author suggested an approach which would …
Maternal Personality Variables And Their Effect On Interaction With Their One-Year Old Children, David Baraga
Maternal Personality Variables And Their Effect On Interaction With Their One-Year Old Children, David Baraga
Theses and Dissertations
Attachment behavior is defined as the diversity of behaviors which promote proximity, contact and communication with the figure or figures to whom the child is attached. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that personality traits of the mother influence the manner in which she characteristically relates to her child. These traits, therefore, influence the quality of attachment of the child.
To accomplish this task, thirty-six mothers and their one- year-old children participated in a controlled laboratory situation consisting of eight episodes in which the child alternately played with the mother, with, a stranger, and alone. Observations were made …
Changes In Clients' Perception Of "Curative Factors" During A Short-Term Therapy Group, Jack B. Schaffer
Changes In Clients' Perception Of "Curative Factors" During A Short-Term Therapy Group, Jack B. Schaffer
Theses and Dissertations
Tlic present study was designed to examine participants' perceptions of specific therapeutic mechanisms which may promote learning or behavior change in therapy groups. Yalom (1970) suggests the possibility that such "curative factors" may be therapeutic at different stages of group development, a general hypothesis which provides the basic framework for this study. Drawing from the theoretical literature on group development (e. g . , Martin and Hill, 1957, Tuckman, 1965), hypotheses were also formulated concerning changes in the perceived importance of specific therapeutic mechanisms as the group develops.
A short form of Yalom's Curative Factors Q-sort was administered on four …

Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to compare scores obtained on the two subtests comprising the Goldman-Fristoe-Woodcock Test of Auditory Discrimination (GFW) to determine test-retest reliability and internal reliability of the GFW.
Twenty-three subjects between the ages of six years, six months to ten years, three months previously identified as exhibiting a learping disability (LD) were matched by age levels with twenty-three subjects identified as exhibiting normal learning abilities (NL) . These two groups were administered the Quiet and Noise Subtest of the GFW followed by a retest within seven days.
Statistical analysis of the test-retest scores of the Quiet …
Effects Of Background Music On Interpersonal Immediacy, Roberta Schwab Stephens
Effects Of Background Music On Interpersonal Immediacy, Roberta Schwab Stephens
Theses and Dissertations
The prosent study was designed to demonstrate the e f fects of background music on immediacy behaviors observed during dyadic interaction. I t was predicted that background music introduced during an ongoing male-female interaction would increase interpersonal immediacy re lat ive to a preceding no-sound baseline. I t was further predicted that immediacy would be enhanced more by background music than by "cont ro l " exposures to white noise.
Six male-female dyads were observed during 36 minutes of continuous interaction. Following an A.-B-A.-C design, the interaction period was divided into four 9-minute segments two baseline segments and two treatment …

The Effects Of Suggestibility And Expectancy On Systematic Desensitization, Dennis L. Johnson
The Effects Of Suggestibility And Expectancy On Systematic Desensitization, Dennis L. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The present study investigated the effects of subject suggestibility and instruction induced expectancies in systematic desensitization. It was hypothesized that subject suggestibility, instruction induced expectancies, and the interaction of suggestibility and expectancies would affect the outcome of systematic desensitization. Students in introductory psychology classes were asked to fill out the Suinn Test Anxiety Behavior Scale (STABS). The Barber Suggestibility Scale (BSS) was later administered to 105 high STABS scorers. High and low BSS scorers were then selected for further participation in the study. High and low suggestibility subjects were randomly assigned to each of the three treatment groups: the high …
