The Effects Of Training In Rapid Reading On The Reading Rate And Comprehension Of Braille And Large Print Readers, Myrna R. Olson Dec 1975

The Effects Of Training In Rapid Reading On The Reading Rate And Comprehension Of Braille And Large Print Readers, Myrna R. Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of rapid reading training (as described by Vearl McBride) on the reading rates and comprehension of large print and braille readers. Of specific interest were comparisons among a group taught by McBride and two taught by the researcher under McBride’s tutelage, furthermore, it was a purpose of this study to investigate differences that exist between informal and formal tests given before and after sixteen hours of rapid reading training. Informal testing consisted of oral reporting on individually chosen prose fiction to achieve an estimated "book report" comprehension. This is the …

The Selective Retention Of Favorable, Neutral, And Unfavorable Statements About Men And Women Measured By Signal Detection, Ronald L. Matthew Dec 1975

The Selective Retention Of Favorable, Neutral, And Unfavorable Statements About Men And Women Measured By Signal Detection, Ronald L. Matthew

Theses and Dissertations

The selective retention hypothesis states that people tend to remember information which is consistent with their attitudes and forget information which is contrary to their attitudes. This hypothesis has been shown to depend upon such factors as the sex of the subject, ego-involvement, the function that learning the material may serve for the subject, the nature of the audience to whom one must communicate, the affective nature of the material, prior familiarity with the material, and the cognitive structure of the subject.

The present study is an attempt to further explore the role of affective material and cognitive structure as …

Short And Long Term Free Recall Of Nouns As A Function Of Learning Instructions And Noun Concreteness, Gregor Konzelman Dec 1975

Short And Long Term Free Recall Of Nouns As A Function Of Learning Instructions And Noun Concreteness, Gregor Konzelman

Theses and Dissertations

The present study was designed to investigate immediate and delayed recall of abstract and concrete nouns learned using a verbal or imagery set. On the basis of the Dual Coding Hypothesis, it was predicted that concrete nouns would be recalled better than abstract nouns for both immediate and delayed recall. It was further expected that imagery instructions would facilitate recall of concrete nouns more than abstract nouns for both immediate and delayed recall. A secondary interest was to investigate the amount of organization in the recall protocols of subjects for both immediate and delayed recall. According to the Organizational Hypothesis …

An Investigation Of Pure Tone Threshold During Menses And Post Menses Using Short Duration Signals, Sandra Hedler Washer Dec 1975

An Investigation Of Pure Tone Threshold During Menses And Post Menses Using Short Duration Signals, Sandra Hedler Washer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if threshold change occurred during menses and two post menses time periods. Sixteen female subjects, using the Bekesy tracing method, determined thresholds for 1 KHz and 4 KHz for signal durations of 2 msec, 20 msec, and 500 msec.

The results indicated that there was no significant difference (p>.05) for the thresholds of 1 KHz and 4 KHz at any duration over the three test times. However, there was a significant second degree trend present at 1 KHz for the 20 msec signal.

A comparison was made between the thresholds obtained …

The Effect Of Dependency On Acceptance Of Positive And Negative Generalized Personality Interpretations, Richard L. Templeton Dec 1975

The Effect Of Dependency On Acceptance Of Positive And Negative Generalized Personality Interpretations, Richard L. Templeton

Theses and Dissertations

The study examined the relationship between dependency and acceptance of generalized personality interpretations (both positive and negative). It was hypothesized that (1) positive interpretations would be accepted more readily than negative interpretations by both dependent and independent subjects; (2) independents and dependents would not differ in their acceptance of positive interpretations; and (3) independents would accept negative interpretations less readily than would dependents.

Results from two data analyses based on rating scales showed that positive interpretations were rated as significantly more accurate than negative interpretations. A third analysis based on subjects' open-ended responses revealed no differences between subjects who received …

The Effects Of Manning Level On Behavior Setting Occupants: A Laboratory Experiment, John A. Call Aug 1975

The Effects Of Manning Level On Behavior Setting Occupants: A Laboratory Experiment, John A. Call

Theses and Dissertations

For mare than two decades Roger Barker, Herbert Wright and their associates have been concerned with the habitat, related structural prop erties, and content of human behavior. From their investigations stemmed Barker's theories concerning the subjective and behavioral effects of the greater inherent "claim," or demand for superior occupant performance. This "claim" is hypothesized to be experienced more often in the under manned behavior setting as opposed to the optimally manned behavior set ting. Recently, however, Allan W. Wicker has criticized much of this early research. Wicker concluded that future experimentation dealing with behavior settings would need more precise definitions …

A Critical Analysis Of Bennett Reimer's Philosphy Of Music Education, James William Hildebrand Aug 1975

A Critical Analysis Of Bennett Reimer's Philosphy Of Music Education, James William Hildebrand

Theses and Dissertations

The study is a critical analysis of Reimer's expressionistic philosophy of music education. The purpose of the study is to determine the ontological nature of the ar-symbol which evolves out of Reimer's philosophy of music and music education. The result is a developmental and evaluative perspective regarding the contemporary music educator as the listener, the performer, and the composer.

This study traces inductively the origins of Reimer's philosophy to Benedetto Croce's concept of the expressionistic mind, John Dewey's concept of an art work, and Susanne K. Langer's concept of the art-symbol. reier synthesizes these origins into three basic concepts: creation, …

The Effects Of Learned Helplessness Upon Appetitive Responding, Thomas R. Foster Aug 1975

The Effects Of Learned Helplessness Upon Appetitive Responding, Thomas R. Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of learned helplessness and its relationship to depression were discussed. It was concluded that if learned helplessness was a valid experimental model for depression it should have detrimental effects on positively reinforced behavior. A number of rats were divided into two yoked groups and these two groups were put on the same food deprivation schedule. The animals were then trained in an aversive situation in a shuttle box. One group received escape training and one group received helplessness training. The yoked pairs received the same mean time of shock exposure. Approximately 24 hours later, both groups were tested …

The Ticket-Splitter: A New Psephos In The American Electorate, Thomas A. Godzala Aug 1975

The Ticket-Splitter: A New Psephos In The American Electorate, Thomas A. Godzala

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the emergence of a new force in the American electorate: The Ticket-Splitter. The ticket- splitter as a contemporary psephos or voting pebble has filled the ballot box at all election levels during the past two decades with a decision that verifies the sudden and persistent growth of ticket-splitting. Moreover,, this increased ballot-splitting has minimized the strength and influence of the two major political parties. But who actually is this ticket-splitter?

In the past, most voting behavior studies have relied on the self-classification by respondents from surveys in order to obtain the overall political identification of the American …

The Divorce Process And Psychological Adjustment, Gary R. Hackney Aug 1975

The Divorce Process And Psychological Adjustment, Gary R. Hackney

Theses and Dissertations

Divorce has become more and more prevalent. Despite the fact that the number of divorces is rapidly increasing, scientific researchers have not taken this opportunity to thoroughly study divorce in general and the divorced in particular. At present, the main body of psychological literature in this field has been predominantly focused on the children and their reactions and future adjustment patterns as a result of going through the unfortunate experience of a parental divorce. Although researchers and laymen alike readily agree that the divorce process is also very difficult on the two spouses, no one has actually researched or defined …

A Comparison Of Mean Occurrences Of Saad Sentences And Transformations, Judith E. Courtney Aug 1975

A Comparison Of Mean Occurrences Of Saad Sentences And Transformations, Judith E. Courtney

Theses and Dissertations

The. purposes of the present .study were to compare the frequency of occurrence of five simple, active, affirmative, declarative (SAAD) sentence patterns and twenty selected transformations in one-hundred utterance oral language samples of sixty preschool children (three, four, and five years of age) and twenty adults (eighteen to twenty-three years of age) and to determine if the first fifty utterances of the language samples differed from the second fifty utterances of the samples with regard to the frequency of occurrence of those same sentence patterns and transformations.

Sixty preschool children and twenty college age adults served as subjects for this …
