Informal Caregiving Strain: Exploring The Impact Of Gender, Race, And Income, Bria Elaine Willert Jan 2018

Informal Caregiving Strain: Exploring The Impact Of Gender, Race, And Income, Bria Elaine Willert

Theses and Dissertations

Informal caregivers are those who provide care without compensation. In the US, eighty-five percent of elderly individuals receive care from an informal caregiver, and this number is expected to increase at a steady rate in future years. Within this role, caregivers often experience different types of strain, stemming from physical, emotional, and financial demands. Guided by intersectionality theory, this thesis explored the relationship between informal caregiving strains and gender, race, and income. This thesis also took into consideration various control variables, including age, marital status, education, number of hours spent providing care, and employment status. Data from the 2015 Caregiving …

Bystander Self-Efficacy To Prevent Sexual Assault: An Evaluation Of The Impacts Of Online And In-Person Bystander Intervention Training, Morgan Paige Devine Jan 2018

Bystander Self-Efficacy To Prevent Sexual Assault: An Evaluation Of The Impacts Of Online And In-Person Bystander Intervention Training, Morgan Paige Devine

Theses and Dissertations

To address the alarming rates of sexual assaults on college campuses, the 2013 Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act required publicly funded colleges to provide some form of sexual assault intervention training to college students. While bystander intervention training is the most common form of primary prevention, there is little research indicating whether online or in-person bystander training is more effective at producing strong bystander self-efficacy and whether bystander intervention is actually occurring. Utilizing data from the 2017 Multi College Bystander Education Efficacy survey taken online by undergraduate students (N = 387) at a Midwestern university, an analysis of self-reported bystander …

Parental Involvement And Academic Outcomes Among First Generation College Students, Jordan A. Jaeger Jan 2018

Parental Involvement And Academic Outcomes Among First Generation College Students, Jordan A. Jaeger

Theses and Dissertations

Higher education can be a challenging culture to navigate for any college student. One group of students that may be at a disadvantage when navigating the this culture is first generation students, those whose parents have not earned a four year degree, compared to their continuing generation peers, those who have at least one parent with a four year degree. The key purpose of this study is to use the theory of cultural capital, with parental involvement as a proxy, to examine relationships between these groups of students, parental involvement, and academic outcomes (academic motivation, class preparedness, and academic performance). …

Women Engineering Majors' Choice To Stay: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Persistence Experiences, Victoria Morrissette Jan 2018

Women Engineering Majors' Choice To Stay: A Phenomenological Exploration Of Persistence Experiences, Victoria Morrissette

Theses and Dissertations

The historical underrepresentation of women in engineering persists for women engineering majors in college and once they enter the workforce. While some engineering disciplines have seen an increase in women students, overall the numbers still have fallen well behind other STEM disciplines despite years of research. Most studies on this issue have been quantitative and have looked at factors associated with why women leave engineering. This qualitative study, in contrast, gave women engineering majors the opportunity to share their experiences in answer to the question of why women choose to stay in an engineering major. Phenomenological methods, including semi-structured interviews, …

Exploring The Experiences Of African American Nurses: An Emancipatory Inquiry, Laurie Pierce

Theses and Dissertations

This inquiry provided a critical and in-depth analysis of African American nurses’ situations within the context of the work environment. Through this examination, multiple oppressions were illuminated. Participants identified both personal experiences of oppression and oppression related to administrative and interdisciplinary hierarchies. Additionally, the participants provided their insights on the concept of empowerment. Definitions of empowerment included being a voice for self and others and empowering others is empowering to self. Thus, the concept of relational empowerment was explicated. Furthermore, the participants envisioned an ideal environment where administration is supportive of nurses, nurses have time to care for the patients, …

Academic Interventions In Secondary Schools: Examining Teachers' Perceptions Of Implementing A Multi-Tiered System Of Support, Shannon Mortrud Dec 2017

Academic Interventions In Secondary Schools: Examining Teachers' Perceptions Of Implementing A Multi-Tiered System Of Support, Shannon Mortrud

Theses and Dissertations

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (2015) only 34% of eighth grade students in the U.S. scored at or above proficient in reading and only 33% were at or above proficient in math. Reading comprehension is essential for the acquisition of knowledge in all coursework and those students who have reading deficits may experience increased academic failure. Deficits in math skills may also increase core academic failure for secondary students expected to complete rigorous courses in algebra and beyond. In a review of the literature, Blount (2012) deduced that academic failure is one of the main predictive risk …

Do The Lessons From Micro-Conflict Literature Transfer To High Crime Areas?: Examining Mexico’S War On Drugs, Muhammad Nasir, Marc Rockmore, Chih Ming Tan Nov 2017

Do The Lessons From Micro-Conflict Literature Transfer To High Crime Areas?: Examining Mexico’S War On Drugs, Muhammad Nasir, Marc Rockmore, Chih Ming Tan

Economics & Finance Faculty Publications

Exposure to political violence has been found to affect behavioural parameters. The effects of high levels of criminal violence, however, are largely unknown. We examine the effects of Mexico’s war on drugs on risk aversion, mental health and pro-social behaviour. Using a nonlinear difference-in-differences (DiD) model, we find that the post 2006 surge in violence significantly increased risk aversion and reduced trust in civic institutions without any simultaneous strengthening of kinship relationships. Although the deterioration of mental health due to violence exposure has been hypothesised to explain changes in risk aversion, we find no such effect.

Student Attitudes Toward Group Discussions, Virginia Clinton, Alison E. Kelly Nov 2017

Student Attitudes Toward Group Discussions, Virginia Clinton, Alison E. Kelly

Educational Foundations and Research Faculty Publications

Student attitudes toward active learning techniques, such as group discussion, are often negative. The purpose of this study was to determine if an intervention informing students of the usefulness of group discussions affects their attitudes on group discussions. Students were randomly assigned to view a video and answer an essay question either on the value of group discussions (treatment) or on how group discussions were graded (control). Students in the treatment indicated group discussions as more useful as students in the control. Importantly, there were no differences in attitudes prior to the intervention. In addition, students reported their perceptions of …

Application Of P300 Event-Related Potential In Brain-Computer Interface, Ali Raider, Reza Fazel-Rezai

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

The primary purpose of this chapter is to demonstrate one of the applications of P300 event-related potential (ERP), i.e., brain-computer interface (BCI). Researchers and students will find the chapter appealing with a preliminary description of P300 ERP. This chapter also appreciates the importance and advantages of noninvasive ERP technique. In noninvasive BCI, the P300 ERPs are extracted from brain electrical activities [electroencephalogram (EEG)] as a signature of the underlying electrophysiological mechanism of brain responses to the external or internal changes and events. As the chapter proceeds, topics are covered on more relevant scholarly works about challenges and new directions in …

What Do Supervision Officers Do? Adult Probation/Parole Officer Workloads In A Rural Western State, Adam K. Matz Oct 2017

What Do Supervision Officers Do? Adult Probation/Parole Officer Workloads In A Rural Western State, Adam K. Matz

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

For several decades time studies have been used as a decision-making tool in criminal justice settings to assist in staffing allocation decisions. Despite their prevalence, these studies have rarely been documented in empirical journals or subjected to peer-review. Publication bias is a likely issue, with only those providing favorable results reaching a public audience. This study reviews the literature and documents a time study of probation and parole officer workloads conducted in a rural Western state. Results reveal probation and parole rely heavily on office-based interactions with probationers and parolees. An over-reliance on compliance enforcement, substantiated by other research in …
