Crew Training Requirements For Long Duration Missions, Ann Wargetz
Crew Training Requirements For Long Duration Missions, Ann Wargetz
Theses and Dissertations
After reviewing the journals of astronauts, cosmonauts, and others who lived and worked in confinement, a new pre-mission training approach for missions in confinement was developed. This new training approach is founded on the idea that conflicts in confinement often arise due to humanity's propensity to focus on how others behave rather than our own behavior. After reviewing the stresses experienced during spaceflight and astronaut training and selection methods, a survey was written and distributed to researchers with experience living and working in confined environments. The questions sought to discover whether conflicts arise for these reasons based on the participant's …

Cultural Identity And Behavioral Health Risk In Northern Plains American Indian Adolescents, Wanmdiwi Jessi Rose
Cultural Identity And Behavioral Health Risk In Northern Plains American Indian Adolescents, Wanmdiwi Jessi Rose
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if Northern Plains AI adolescents identifying oneself as being "traditional' or "non-traditional" as measured by the Northern Plains Bicultural Inventory III (NPBI-III) would affect health-risk behavior scores as measured by the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS). It was hypothesized that American Indian adolescents identifying as traditional would have lower health- risk behaviors and that cultural identification would influence health-risk behaviors between males and females.
Northern Plains AI adolescents (N=60, age 14 to 19) were administered the YRBS and NPBI-III during the 2012 UNDIA Time out Wacipi Powwow in Grand Forks, ND. Results …
Interprofessonal Education: Two Analyses Of Revised Instruments, Comparisons Of Professions, And Effectiveness Of An Interprofessional Health Care Course, Andrew Knight
Theses and Dissertations
The purposes of study #1 were to assess the reliability of the Readiness for Interprofessional Learning Scale (RIPLS-2010, Parsell & Bligh, 1999) instrument that was used in an Interprofessional Health Care (IPHC) course at University of North Dakota from 2010-2012 and compare students by discipline. The IPHC course curriculum team includes the director of Interprofessional Education, a course coordinator, and one faculty representative from medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, social work, music therapy, communication science and disorders, and nutrition/dietetics. The purposes of study #2 included an analysis of the reliability of a different version of the RIPLS (called RIPLS-2013) …
Climate Change And Ragweed Allergy Risk Assessment: A Study Of The Grand Forks Metropolitan Statistical Area, Shumila Rani Ahmad
Climate Change And Ragweed Allergy Risk Assessment: A Study Of The Grand Forks Metropolitan Statistical Area, Shumila Rani Ahmad
Theses and Dissertations
Nowadays the association between anthropogenic climate change and public health is in the early stages of universal recognition. Yet one fundamental aspect that remains largely unappreciated is the impact of climate change on ragweed (Ambrosia species) biology and the ensuing pathophysiology of human systems. Ragweed pollen is one of the primary causes of seasonal pollen allergy in the world. Allergic reactions to ragweed pollen can range from mild hay fever to life-threatening asthma attacks. The aim of this thesis was to conduct a ragweed allergy risk assessment for the Grand Forks ND-MN Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).
The study area is …

Dexmedetomidine As An Adjunct To General Anesthesia In The Adult Obese Surgical Population, Bryan J. Phelps
Dexmedetomidine As An Adjunct To General Anesthesia In The Adult Obese Surgical Population, Bryan J. Phelps
Theses and Dissertations
Current estimates place over one-third of the adult population in the obese category. Obesity is associated with a number of pathophysiologic disturbances that complicate the anesthetic course for these patients. The increasing prevalence of obesity and the established positive outcomes for surgical weight loss therapies have led to obese patients presenting for surgery at a rapidly increasing rate. Obesity places the surgical patient at an increased risk for cardiovascular events, respiratory dysfunction, airway management difficulties and increased postoperative pain. It is imperative for the anesthesia provider to be aware of these risks, unique anesthesia considerations, along with alternative therapies, which …
Assessment Of The Impact Of Integrated Simulation On Critical Thinking And Clinical Judgment In Nursing Instruction, Rita Allen Meyer
Assessment Of The Impact Of Integrated Simulation On Critical Thinking And Clinical Judgment In Nursing Instruction, Rita Allen Meyer
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of using simulation and didactic instruction on critical thinking and clinical judgment with student nurses enrolled in a fall semester medical-surgical class. Specifically, it was of interest to compare the performance of these fall semester nursing students with the performance of nursing students enrolled in a spring semester class who received only didactic instruction.
The study consisted of 18 participants who were nursing students enrolled in the senior level Adult Medical-Surgical 111, the third medical-surgical class in the curriculum. There were two non-randomized groups. The experimental group received the intervention, …

Arsenic, Cadmium And Neuron Specific Enolase (Enolase-2, Enolase-Gamma), Expression In Breast And Bladder Cancer, Maureen Achey Soh
Arsenic, Cadmium And Neuron Specific Enolase (Enolase-2, Enolase-Gamma), Expression In Breast And Bladder Cancer, Maureen Achey Soh
Theses and Dissertations
Arsenic and cadmium (Cd+2) are well established environmental pollutants. Human exposure to arsenite (As+3) and Cd +2 have been associated with many types of cancers including skin, bladder, liver, prostate, stomach and lung. Epidemiological studies have associated Cd+2 exposure with breast cancer development while As +3 has not been directly associated with breast cancer development, although both As+3 and Cd+2 have been implicated in estrogen receptor mediated gene transcription and endocrine disruption. In the present study, the ability of both these heavy metals to transform the immortalized human breast epithelial (MCF-10A) cell line was examined. For this purpose, the MCF-10A …

Older Adult Perceptions Of Physical Activity, Selinda Janssen
Older Adult Perceptions Of Physical Activity, Selinda Janssen
Theses and Dissertations
Physical activity (PA) decreases the risk of age-associated illness and functional impairments; however, older adults engage in PA at a lower rate than any other age group (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006). The purpose of this study is to determine how PA becomes sustainable in older adults over the age of 65 in order to guide effective wellness programming. This Will help older adults age in place rather than having to move into institutions due to illness or functional impairments. This is a phenomenological study that includes interviews and observations of 15 community dwelling older adults. In the …
