Class Is Out: Mental Health Professionals' Social Class Identification And Classist Attitudes Toward Low-Income Clients, Kipp Ryan Pietrantonio

Theses and Dissertations

Social class as a variable of culturally competent psychology remains a misunderstood and understudied phenomenon. This study was designed to explore how mental health providers’ social class of origin and classist attitudes impact their beliefs and treatment of clients from different economic backgrounds. This was accomplished by exploring five domains across two vignettes that varied in SES indicators (Low-‐Income vs. Middle Class Vignette). The domains of study included classist beliefs, GAF scores with or without treatment over time, positive and negative stereotype endorsement, perceptions of the therapeutic relationship, and potential treatment modalities. Clinicians did not rate the vignettes differently in …

Self Management In Heart Failure Education, Michelle Brown

Heart failure is a growing health problem in the United States, costing the healthcare system billions of dollars and having a significant impact on patients' quality of life. To improve heart failure outcomes and reduce associated costs, we must educate patients to properly manage their disease condition. Traditionally, this patient education takes place during a standard office visit with a provider. However, in a self-management program, the provider, through individualized education, empowers the patient to become an active participant in their care. The purpose of this literature review was to explore the effect of self management programs, in comparison to …

Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to complete a review of literature and determine methods providers can use to increase the implementation rates of advance directives (ADs). A growing elderly population coupled with an increase in chronic disease is making the implementation of advance directives more important than ever, yet the percentage of completed advance directives continues to be poor. Utilizing a review of evidence-based research, barriers to implementation were identified. This includes communication, timing and setting, appropriate end-of-life care and utilization of Provider Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) to provide a detailed format therefore lessening miscommunication. A pamphlet …

Educational Intervention To Promote And Facilitate Smoking Cessation In Pregnant Women, Jessica Stadick

Theses and Dissertations

Smoking during pregnancy is the single most preventable and modifiable risk factor that is responsible for poor maternal and fetal outcomes, yet it remains a major public health problem. Despite the abundance of well-known risk factors and adverse health outcomes associated with maternal smoking, many women continue to smoke during pregnancy. Maternal smoking is responsible for low birth weight babies, preterm deliveries, and sudden infant death syndrome and long term chronic health conditions of the child. During pregnancy women have an increased desire to quit smoking and health care providers need to take advantage of this opportune time and help …

A Guide To Seasonal Migration: Increasing Snowbirds' Longevity, Stephanie Haselkamp, Jenny Styles Jan 2013

A Guide To Seasonal Migration: Increasing Snowbirds' Longevity, Stephanie Haselkamp, Jenny Styles

Occupational Therapy Capstones

With the demographic shift of the aging population within the United States, and the push for preventative healthcare measures, occupational therapy (OT) practitioners need to adjust the way they are delivering their services to best meet this growing population's needs. Falls prevention is a method for occupational therapists to get involved in preventative care. The need for preventing falls is further supported by the concept of aging-in-place. Aging-in-place is popular amongst the older population, as older adults often wish to remain in their homes and natural contexts for as long as possible. Homes can come in many different forms; and …

The Effect Of Health Expenditure And Other Determinants On Health Outcomes, Yi Liu Jan 2013

The Effect Of Health Expenditure And Other Determinants On Health Outcomes, Yi Liu

Theses and Dissertations

A major question in determining health policy is to what extent the additional health care expenditure yields benefits in the form of improved health outcomes. However, establishing relationships between them is very complex, because there are numerous factors besides health expenditure that could contribute to health outcomes, and some data especially individual level nutrition and exercise data, are nearly impossible to gather. Another difficulty involves which indicator we should choose to measure health outcomes.

This study examines life expectancy, all-cause age adjusted mortality rates and infant mortality as the "output" of the health care system, and health expenditure, various life-style, …

The Impact Of Continuous Prenatal And Early Postpartum Maternal Vitamin D Supplementation On The Vitamin D Status Of Exclusively Breastfed Infants, Doria K. Thiele Jan 2013

The Impact Of Continuous Prenatal And Early Postpartum Maternal Vitamin D Supplementation On The Vitamin D Status Of Exclusively Breastfed Infants, Doria K. Thiele

Theses and Dissertations

In the United States, at least 50% of breastfeeding mothers are vitamin D deficient, increasing risk for vitamin D deficiency in exclusively breastfed infants. A gap in knowledge exists regarding best practices in maternal vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy and lactation that will yield adequate infant vitamin D levels. The objective of this study was to identify the combined effect of maternal prenatal and postnatal vitamin D supplementation on vitamin D transfer to exclusively breastfed infants. Additionally, due to the immune modulating effects of vitamin D, maternal pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were measured across pregnancy and the postpartum. A double-blind, …

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Skilled Dementia Care: Improving Quality Of Life, Kelly Bainbridge, April Benoit Jan 2013

The Role Of Occupational Therapy In Skilled Dementia Care: Improving Quality Of Life, Kelly Bainbridge, April Benoit

Occupational Therapy Capstones

The occurrence of dementia has been increasing over the years. It is estimated that the number of people with dementia will increase to more than 45 million within the next 20 years (Ferri et al., 2005). This increase will lead to an increased demand for occupational therapists to work with individuals with dementia within skilled care units to meet the vast needs of this population and promote quality of life. Occupational therapists are skilled in working with people with dementia; yet, most occupational therapists do not feel confident in their role with skilled dementia care. This has been found to …
