Increasing Palliative Care Referrals In Terminal Lung Cancer Patients, John Edward Roll

Theses and Dissertations

Late referrals to palliative care services for patients suffering from terminal lung cancer is an ongoing problem that unnecessarily shortens patient survival time by inadequate and poorly timed symptom control that affects the remaining quality of life for both patient and family. The latest mortality figures available (2011) showed approximately 157,000 people died due to cancer of the lung, trachea, and bronchus (CDC, 2014a). The purpose of this independent study was to review and effectively analyze the literature and understand the reasons and barriers to early referral of palliative care services by health care providers for their clients diagnosed with …

Low Bone Mineral Density In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Molly K. Torvik Apr 2015

Low Bone Mineral Density In Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Molly K. Torvik

Theses and Dissertations

Low bone mineral density is a common and detrimental extra-intestinal complication in inflammatory bowel disease (IBO). There are several factors known to contribute to low bone mineral density in this population. The case outlined reviews a postmenopausal female with osteoporosis. While low bone mineral density in postmenopausal women is well-studied and often applied to 180, the process of bone loss is different in IBD which makes treatment more difficult. The literature review discusses the increased 1isk for low bone mineral density in IBD, factors increasing its risk, current screening and preventive care recommendations, barriers to improved bone mineral density in …

Dietary Habits And Colorectal Cancer Risk, Stacie M. Frovarp, Apr 2015

Dietary Habits And Colorectal Cancer Risk, Stacie M. Frovarp,

Theses and Dissertations

According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) (2014), colorectal cancer (CRC) is the "3rd leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States"(p. 3). Researches have hypothesized how dietary habits could increase an individual's risk of developing CRC. Diets high in red meat for example, have long been thought to produce carcinogens through cooking and digestive processes. These carcinogens damage colon DNA, leading to neoplastic changes (Raskov, Pommergaard, Burcharth, & Rosenberg, 2014). On the other hand, fiber has been suggested as having a protective nature to individuals with CRC risk. Throughout this literature review a case involving 65-year-old female …

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Effective Breastfeeding Education, Emmalee Schubring Apr 2015

The Impact Of Health Literacy On Effective Breastfeeding Education, Emmalee Schubring

Theses and Dissertations

Many studies have shown that any amount of breastfeeding decreases a child's risk of otitis media, gastroenteritis, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity, and type 2 diabetes . Breastfeeding for one month or more decreases the risk of SIDS; two months or more decreases the risk of celiac disease; and breastfeeding for more than three months decreases the risk of type 1 diabetes, atopic dermatitis, and asthma. The benefits continue to grow if a child is breastfed more than six months (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2012) .

Even though the benefits of breastfeeding are well documented, low-income women are still less likely …

Osteochondritis Dissecans (Ocd): A Case Report, Brady Meyer Jan 2015

Osteochondritis Dissecans (Ocd): A Case Report, Brady Meyer

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

Background and Purpose: Osteochondritis Diseccans, (OCD) is the separation of articular cartilage and its adjacent underlying subchondral bone from the articular surface of a joint. Multiple hypotheses have been put forward regarding the cause of OCD including inflammation, ossification abnormalities, ischemia, and repetitive microtrauma. At this time, there is no single cause regarding the etiology of OCD. The purpose of this case study is to describe the physical therapy interventions performed on a college athlete for non-operative treatment of OCD. To also look at the non-operative treatment that the patient underwent, and determine if treatment could delay or stop …

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Society, Jessica Lee Clark Jan 2015

The Effects Of Income Inequality On Society, Jessica Lee Clark

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an examination of the relationship between income inequality and numerous indicators that capture the physical health of the citizens, additionally controlling for numerous other confounding factors. The analysis contributes to the literature by examining this relationship at a more disaggregated level within the Unites States than previous studies. This approach may help us to explore any impacts of income inequality on health that are lost in aggregation. The analysis also includes the most recent recession and adds to the literature the impact of inequality on health during a period of economic crisis. Results suggest that there is …

Disaggregating Tree And Grass Phenology In Tropical Savannas, Qiang Zhou Jan 2015

Disaggregating Tree And Grass Phenology In Tropical Savannas, Qiang Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Savannas are mixed tree-grass systems and as one of the world’s largest biomes represent an important component of the Earth system affecting water and energy balances, carbon sequestration and biodiversity as well as supporting large human populations. Savanna vegetation structure and its distribution, however, may change because of major anthropogenic disturbances from climate change, wildfire, agriculture, and livestock production. The overstory and understory may have different water use strategies, different nutrient requirements and have different responses to fire and climate variation. The accurate measurement of the spatial distribution and structure of the overstory and understory are essential for understanding the …

The Relationship Between A Series Of Vitamin D Levels And A Blood Glucose Level In Pregnant Women In The Upper Midwest, Jeanine Louise Senti Jan 2015

The Relationship Between A Series Of Vitamin D Levels And A Blood Glucose Level In Pregnant Women In The Upper Midwest, Jeanine Louise Senti

Theses and Dissertations

Hyperglycemia during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes for both mother and offspring. In order to facilitate glucose delivery to the fetus, insulin resistance increases as gestation progresses which results in hyperglycemia if the mother’s body is unable to compensate by producing adequate insulin in response to these changes in glucose metabolism. Evidence suggests that calcidiol (vitamin D) influences insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism in the non-pregnant population yet there are inconsistent findings on the effects of calcidiol on maternal glucose levels during pregnancy. A secondary analysis was completed on a de-identified data set. The original prospective study included a …
