Aligning Problem Solving And Gameplay : A Model For Future Research And Design, Woei Hung, Richard Van Eck
Aligning Problem Solving And Gameplay : A Model For Future Research And Design, Woei Hung, Richard Van Eck
Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications
Problem solving is often discussed as one of the benefits of games and game-based learning (e.g., Gee, 2007a, Van Eck 2006a), yet little empirical research exists to support this assertion. It will be critical to establish and validate models of problem solving in games (Van Eck, 2007), but this will be difficult if not impossible without a better understanding of problem solving than currently exists in the field of serious games. While games can be used to teach a variety of content across multiple domains (Van Eck, 2006b, 2008), the ability of games to promote problem solving may be more …

Weight Loss Surgery Decision Process: A Grounded Theory Study, Martha Lystad
Weight Loss Surgery Decision Process: A Grounded Theory Study, Martha Lystad
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to investigate the decision making process of morbidly or severely obese individuals who engage in weight loss surgery and the role of nurses in this process using a grounded theory research design. Morbid or severe obesity is a chronic illness that is increasing in prevalence throughout the United States. The Center for Disease Control (2007) reported the obesity population of adults doubled from 15.1% in 1976-80 to 30.9% in 1999-2000. The current most effective long-term treatment for morbid or severe obesity is weight loss surgery, most commonly gastric bypass or gastric banding. Furthermore, …

A Behavioral Health Intervention For Decreasing Weight Gain In First Year University Students, Sonia E.A. Marrone
A Behavioral Health Intervention For Decreasing Weight Gain In First Year University Students, Sonia E.A. Marrone
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the current study was to evaluate two interventions proposed to improve health behaviors and decrease weight gain among first-year university students, utilizing a health risk appraisal (HRA), telephone health coaching, and monthly health-related emails. The HRA assessed and provided individualized feedback for several behavioral health risk factors. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups: (1) Health coaching (HC): HRA with individualized feedback, health coaching and health-related emails; (2) Minimal intervention: HRA with individualized feedback and monthly health-related emails; and (3) Control: HRA without feedback. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) tests were performed, adjusting for baseline levels …
Anesthetic Considerations For The Obstetrical Patient With Multiple Sclerosis, Jennifer Pedersen
Anesthetic Considerations For The Obstetrical Patient With Multiple Sclerosis, Jennifer Pedersen
Theses and Dissertations
The obstetrical patient with pre-existing Multiple Sclerosis (MS) presents the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) with specific concerns regarding anesthetic management. The physiological and pathophysiological changes of pregnancy and of the disease process itself must be taken into consideration. Despite a lack of controlled studies to support clinical practice, CRNAs have traditionally avoided regional anesthesia in these patients due to the fear of disease relapse or because of legal concerns. Several authors have attempted to link regional anesthesia to MS relapse in the obstetrical patient, however no research has shown a direct link between any anesthetic technique and an increase …

Depression And Health Among American Indian And Alaska Native Elders, Crystal R. Evans
Depression And Health Among American Indian And Alaska Native Elders, Crystal R. Evans
Theses and Dissertations
There is evidence of an association between depression, chronic disease, health status, and functionality among the elderly population. Research examining these relationships among American Indian elders is limited. This paper used data from the Identifying Our Needs: A Survey of Elders II to examine the relationships between target health variables and depression in a national sample of 10,743 American Indian elders. The data suggests that depression is significantly related to self-rated health, overnight hospital stays, spiritual activities, vigorous exercise, activity limitations, chronic disease, and community service usage. Additionally, self-rated health, limitations, binge drinking, and chronic disease were predictive of which …
