Digital Evidence Photography: Historical Perspective And Law Enforcement Policy, Jean Youshefski May 2006

Digital Evidence Photography: Historical Perspective And Law Enforcement Policy, Jean Youshefski

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the contents of police department policies pertaining to the use of digital photography. Content analysis findings are compared with evidentiary requirements of admissibility in a court of law to determine if the policies address these pertinent issues. A history of evidence photography illustrates how judges have assimilated the use of photographic technology for evidentiary purposes and applied common rules of evidence to the process. The works of J. Mnookin (1998), C.C. Scott (1942), and case texts from the National Reporter System were used extensively as historic references. Current literature about suggested standard operating procedures for the use …

Giving All Children A Good Start To School: A Protocol In Defining Occupational Therapist's Role In School Readiness, Specifically In The Smart Program, Melissa Boll Jan 2006

Giving All Children A Good Start To School: A Protocol In Defining Occupational Therapist's Role In School Readiness, Specifically In The Smart Program, Melissa Boll

Occupational Therapy Capstones

More children are entering school "not ready." Current research is showing that many "healthy" children are entering school not developmentally ready for formal learning. Based my own experiences working as a school occupational therapist for the past four years in rural area schools, this new trend is becoming more apparent. Teachers and other school professionals have increasing concerns over the numbers of children that seem "clumsy" or "awkward" compared to their peers. Children are expected to learn more than ever before upon entering school, the curriculum is no longer age-appropriate due to the pushing down of academics. Upon entrance to …

Listening To The Divine Lyre: Greek Epigrams And Theories Of Lyric, Allen E. Helmstetter Dec 2005

Listening To The Divine Lyre: Greek Epigrams And Theories Of Lyric, Allen E. Helmstetter

Theses and Dissertations

I ask whether or not the Lyric can be defined solely in structural terms as a self-referential linguistic artifact, and if so, in what sense we should construe the poem’s relationship to the world and to knowledge. Using close readings of ancient and classical Greek epigrams, I first turn to Michael Riffaterre’s semiotics of poetry, in which it is proposed that the sign/signifier relationships generated in the text of poems can be exhausted in principle in an intertextual system of signs that makes no reference to the world. I then turn to Paul de Man, who suspects that Riffaterre may …

Interlanguage Coda Production Of Hmong Second Language Learners Of English, Renae L. Caneday Dec 2005

Interlanguage Coda Production Of Hmong Second Language Learners Of English, Renae L. Caneday

Theses and Dissertations

This paper reports on Hmong speakers' acquisition of English in children ages 9 and 12 on final voiced and voiceless consonants and consonant clusters, none of which occur in Hmong codas except /ŋ/. The learners' production patterns were considered using an Optimality Theory account to understand the conflict between the learner's first language constraints and the learner's target language constraints. The main findings of this study are that the Hmong language and the English language constraints interacted in an ordered fashion allowing predictable patterns in production. The final consonants and consonant clusters were often deleted or changed by the intermediate …

Asian Indian Perceptions Of Normality: A Qualitative Study, Mohammed S. Lodhi Khan Dec 2005

Asian Indian Perceptions Of Normality: A Qualitative Study, Mohammed S. Lodhi Khan

Theses and Dissertations

Normal mental health has always been defined from a Euro-centric worldview that excludes non-Westem cultures. In fact, what is normal is biased against non-Westem cultural ideals that influenced the definition of mental health. The difference between Eastern and Western cultural values suggest that the two cultures may also have differing views on the definition of normal mental health. The most commonly accepted definition of normality currently in use in the West is based on the models of health, utopia, average, transactional systems, and pragmatism. However, people from non-European cultures, such as Asian Indians, may not be represented by these current …

"Into The Light Of Christian Civilization": St. Elizabeth's Boarding School For Indian Children (1886-1967), Carole A. Barrett

Theses and Dissertations

This study uses archival sources and oral history interviews to construct a history of St. Elizabeth’s Boarding School for Indian Children an institution sponsored by the Protestant Episcopal Church and located on the South Dakota side of the Standing Rock Reservation. St. Elizabeth’s opened in 1886 and closed in 1967. In the 1930s the school closed, and students attended a local public school; however, the mission continued to board children. Essentially the goals of the school, first set down by Bishop William Hobart Hare, continued to shape St. Elizabeth’s after it became a mission home. The major goal of this …

The Effect Of Teaching With Acoustical Guidance (Tag) On The Mastery Of A Grand Rond De Jambe (En Dehors) And A Ballotte, Heidi Dutch Schneider

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the effect of Teaching with Acoustical Guidance (TAG) on the mastery of two ballet skills, the Grand Rond de Jambe (en dehors) and a Ballotte'. Dance technique classes still follow traditional methods of teaching and mastering skills without much integration of motor learning concepts. TAG Teach is a method that uses positive reinforcement, shaping, and a hand held device that produces an acoustic sound to mark correct behaviors at the moment they occur. The purpose of this study was to determine if TAG was a faster and more effective technique to aid in the mastery of two …

Choral Reading With Filtered Speech: Effect On Stuttering, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Michael P. Rastatter, Donald Holbert, Mark Allen

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

This study investigated use of choral reading with filtered components of speech and whispered speech on the frequency of stuttering. Three passages read by a normal adult male were lowpass filtered with kneepoint frequencies at 100 Hz (approximate glottal source), 500 Hz (source and first formant), and 1 kHz (source and the first two formants). Along with a whispered passage, a normal passage, and a control condition, these stimuli were used in a repeated-measures design with 12 adult stutterers as they read passages while listening to one of the stimuli. Frequencies of stuttering in each condition were analyzed. The choral …
