Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications
This study reports Korean English language learners’ perceived needs concerning their learning of reading and writing and how the integrated reading and writing instruction impacts their reading comprehension and summary-writing abilities. The study also delineates teacher’s challenges faced during the instruction. A total of 93 students in a middle school in Korea participated in a needs survey, and 69 students at three proficiency levels received the integrated instruction. The study found that students desired extra help on their writing to gain balanced English competence; also they wanted to learn reading and writing together. After the intervention, students at intermediate and …

Deixis In Shughni: Grammatical And Semantic Considerations, Katja S. Mueller
Deixis In Shughni: Grammatical And Semantic Considerations, Katja S. Mueller
Theses and Dissertations
Shughni is one of the best documented and described languages of the Pamirs. Linguistic research so far has focused on the verbal system of Shughni grammar but no detailed study has been done on the deictic system of the language. In this thesis I will describe grammatical and semantic aspects of the deictic system in Shughni.
During the course of the project I observed natural conversations, and listened to stories and discussions, and additionally I elicited sentences or conversations in order to clarify structures or understanding of previous observations.
In this thesis I describe the grammatical structures of Shughni deixis …
Computer-Assisted Vocabulary Learning For Deaf Learners Of Foreign Sign Languages, Benjamin J. Cavaletto
Computer-Assisted Vocabulary Learning For Deaf Learners Of Foreign Sign Languages, Benjamin J. Cavaletto
Theses and Dissertations
Deaf people have as great or greater need and desire to learn foreign languages as their hearing peers. Currently it is difficult for these learners to find courses and materials that are appropriate for their learning needs. Especially difficult is finding courses or learning materials for learning sign languages, which are more motivating and more accessible for Deaf learners than spoken languages. Additionally, evidence is presented that learning a foreign sign language can act as a bridge to learning a spoken language from the same region. The study presented in this thesis tested the efficacy of a computer-assisted vocabulary learning …
Factors That Influence Pilot Usage Of Flight Following, Jody Barbara Bulger
Factors That Influence Pilot Usage Of Flight Following, Jody Barbara Bulger
Theses and Dissertations
Every year there are numerous reports of mid-air collisions across the United States, most of which occur in day time VFR conditions. Flight following, a free service to VFR aircraft, is a tool to help pilots with collision avoidance. This study used an interview process to investigate factors that influence pilot usage of flight following. The study was able to use a quantitative method to identify certain factors that influence pilot usage of flight following including: type of airport a pilot is based at or mainly flies out of, understanding of the air traffic control system, having a Seaplane Rating, …
Falam Immigrants In America: Motivations For Language Use, Maintenance, And Shift, Hannah Reeves
Falam Immigrants In America: Motivations For Language Use, Maintenance, And Shift, Hannah Reeves
Theses and Dissertations
Using a mixed qualitative and quantitative approach, I explore immigrants' individual motivations for language use, language shift and language maintenance. I met with 25 immigrants to the US who are native speakers of Falam, a language from Myanmar, to learn their reasons for Falam and English usage as well as their desires for Falam usage in the US. I used the Perceived Benefit Model of Language Shift's taxonomy of motivations to classify each motivation expressed. Among Falam immigrants to America, I found that solidarity-related and communicative motivations are behind language maintenance while economic and communicative motivations are behind language shift. …
Case And Pragmatic Status Markers In Embera Katío, Bethany Winter Carlson
Case And Pragmatic Status Markers In Embera Katío, Bethany Winter Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
In previous research on the Embera languages of the Chocó genus of Colombia and Panama, many different terms have been applied to one or all of the morphemes ba, ta and ra that frequently mark noun phrases and dependent clauses, and some of these descriptions have been conflicting. This study summarizes the previous analyses and compares them to language data from a corpus of texts and elicited material. The result is an analysis in which ba has three functions, marking ergative case, instrumental case and reason; ta marks focus on absolutives; and ra marks pragmatic topic and syntactic topics. …

Determinants Of Systemic Risk And Information Dissemination, Marcelo Bianconi, Xiaxin Hua, Chih Ming Tan
Determinants Of Systemic Risk And Information Dissemination, Marcelo Bianconi, Xiaxin Hua, Chih Ming Tan
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
We introduce a measure of information dissemination for the determination of systemic risk, print-media consumer pessimism, controlling for VIX volatility. VIX volatility has a significant direct impact upon systemic risk of financial firms under distress, and consumer pessimism does impact upon firm's financial stress via the externality of other firm's financial stress. In the internet bubble of the 1990s, pessimism predicts larger systemic risk in the whole period of exuberance while the VIX predicts a sharp larger systemic risk in the height of the bubble. Our evidence suggests that consumer pessimism might be dominated by the VIX when predicting systemic …
Giving Literacy, Learning Literacy: Service Learning And School Book Drives, Anne Walker
Giving Literacy, Learning Literacy: Service Learning And School Book Drives, Anne Walker
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Service‐learning can provide a range of literacy learning experiences for children as they work to solve real world problems and engage in inquiry, collaboration and reflection. Rather than being an extracurricular activity, service‐learning projects are designed to meet standards and align with existing curriculum. This article explores how teachers can engage their students in literacy‐based service learning using the example of a book drive that supported literacy and children's libraries in Ethiopia. The article draws on both scholarly research and personal experience and provides practical information and resources.

Identifying Barriers To Mental Health Services For Limited And Non-English Speaking Clients In A Rural Homogenous Environment: An Approach To Reduce Barriers With Technology, Alma Torres
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to explore the current protocols set in place by local agencies when working with limited English proficiency clients (LEP). Due to the homogenous environment in the state of North Dakota and Northwestern Minnesota and the increase of immigrants, migrants and refugees to the area, the use of interpreters has become a necessity. A questionnaire was used as means of collecting data regarding the number of agencies that service limited English proficiency clients, employ interpreters, how interpreters are trained and the use of technology for interpretation purposes. Interpreter is defined for this purpose as an …
Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley
Educating Cliniccians On Evidence Based Interventions For Healthy Literacy, Kathryn Shradley
Theses and Dissertations
The need for health literate communication is evident in a changing and complex health care system. Yet, little formal training is available for nurses, physicians, and other health clinicians. Poor communication in the healthcare setting has negative effects on the patient, on the clinician, the health system and the larger community. This literature review identified techniques evident in the literature to produce positive patient and clinician health and communication outcomes. Supported interventions include communication techniques such as motivational interviewing, teach-back, teach-to-goal, the Four Habits Model and the Ask Me 3 model. The impact of such interventions can be measured through …
Students' Emotions For Achievement And Technology Use In Synchronous Hybrid Graduate Programmes: A Control-Value Approach, Nikolaus T. Butz, Robert H. Stupnisky, Reinhard Pekrun
Students' Emotions For Achievement And Technology Use In Synchronous Hybrid Graduate Programmes: A Control-Value Approach, Nikolaus T. Butz, Robert H. Stupnisky, Reinhard Pekrun
Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Synchronous hybrid delivery (simultaneously teaching on-campus and online students using web conferencing) is becoming more common; however, little is known about how students experience emotions in this learning environment. Based on Pekrun’s (2006) control-value theory of emotions, the dual purpose of this study was first to compare synchronous hybrid students who attend online versus on-campus in terms of control, value, emotions and perceived success and second to compare students’ degree of emotional activation in the domains of programme achievement and technology use. Survey data from 101 graduate business students revealed that online students reported significantly higher levels of technology-related anger, …

Robust Multiple Regimes In Growth Volatility, Andros Kourtellos, Ioanna Stylianou, Chih Ming Tan
Robust Multiple Regimes In Growth Volatility, Andros Kourtellos, Ioanna Stylianou, Chih Ming Tan
Economics & Finance Faculty Publications
In this paper, we uncover growth volatility regimes and identify their robust determinants using a large international panel of countries. In doing so, we propose a novel empirical methodology that allows us to simultaneously deal with two key elements of model uncertainty, namely theory uncertainty and parameter heterogeneity, by unifying two recent econometric techniques: Bayesian model averaging and threshold regression. We find ample evidence of parameter heterogeneity and model uncertainty. Our results highlight the role of ethnic fractionalization, institutions, financial development, health, and geography.
Hiding Your Emotions In Plain Sight: Differences Between Real Anger And Feigned Anger In Japanese Girls' Speech, Aidan Aannestad
Hiding Your Emotions In Plain Sight: Differences Between Real Anger And Feigned Anger In Japanese Girls' Speech, Aidan Aannestad
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
This paper demonstrates the use of non-denotative meaning markers as a way of indicating a speaker’s emotional state. Japanese has a number of such markers, and they pattern differently according to the speaker’s emotion; creating distinctions between speech acts under various emotional circumstances. This paper examines the dialogue of three fictional characters from Japanese television and demonstrates visible differences in their speech patterns between real anger and feigned anger.
Saps And Digital Games: Improving Mathematics Transfer And Attitudes In Schools, Richard Van Eck
Saps And Digital Games: Improving Mathematics Transfer And Attitudes In Schools, Richard Van Eck
Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications
Many suggest that digital games are a way to address problems with schools, yet research on their ability to promote problem solving, critical thinking, and twenty-first century skill sets appears to be mixed. In this chapter, I suggest that the problem lies not with digital games, but with our conceptualization of what it means to promote problem solving and critical thinking, and how transfer of such skills works in general and, specifically, with games. The power of digital games lies not in some magical power of the medium, but from embedded theories (e.g., situated learning and problem-centered instruction) and from …
The War With The Sioux, Karl Jakob Skarstein
The War With The Sioux, Karl Jakob Skarstein
Digital Press Books
Translated Melissa Gjellstad and Danielle Skjelver With contributions from Dakota Goodhouse and Richard Rothaus
The Dakota War (1862-1864) ranks among the most overlooked conflicts in American History. Contemporary with the American Civil War, the Dakota War featured significant fighting, tactical brilliance, and strategic savvy set in the open landscape of the Northern Plains in Minnesota and North Dakota.
Karl Jakob Starstein’s The War with the Sioux tells the story of the Norwegian immigrants, American soldiers, and Lakota and Dakota Indians as they sought to protect their ways of life. Translated from Norwegian and supplemented with new introductions by Melissa Gjellstad, …
Non-Reified Space: Henry James's Critique Of Capitalism Through Abstractness And Ambiguity, Elizabeth Aileen Barnum
Non-Reified Space: Henry James's Critique Of Capitalism Through Abstractness And Ambiguity, Elizabeth Aileen Barnum
Theses and Dissertations
Despite Henry James’s reputation as a novelist of upper class manners, many critics have argued that his work also contains well-grounded criticism of capitalism and consumer culture. An even larger number of writers have analyzed James’s idiosyncratic style, characterized by ambiguity and abstractness. Where these two analytic approaches overlap, the area examined in this dissertation, James makes a deeper critique of capitalism’s redefinition of human purpose and its reification of the human mind and consciousness. James suggests, through his ambiguous and abstract language, that open-ended language which rejects concrete and conceptual meaning can gesture toward a space in which people …
The Efficacy Of Teaching Academic Vocabulary To Kindergarteners In An Explicit, Literacy Based Method, Hannah Mae Loesch
The Efficacy Of Teaching Academic Vocabulary To Kindergarteners In An Explicit, Literacy Based Method, Hannah Mae Loesch
Theses and Dissertations
Vocabulary test scores from the ZOT, a researcher designed assessment, were obtained from kindergarten students (n=36) involved in a vocabulary intervention pilot study. The purpose of the current study was to (a) investigate if kindergarten students can learn academic vocabulary through a whole classroom approach to intervention during a brief story book reading session, (b) compare academic vocabulary learning between two methodological approaches and (c) compare the differences in learning of specific academic words. Comparison of mean ZOT results suggested (a) participants who did not receive special services through an Individual Education Plan (IEP) learned academic vocabulary (d = 1.76; …
