Cuicateco Indian Tribe, Marjorie Davis
Cuicateco Indian Tribe, Marjorie Davis
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Excerpts: "The Cuicateco Indians of Mexico are a tribe without songs, yet they are known as the singing people. The tribal language is a tonal one with many word couplets, triplets and quadruplets which sound alike except for a difference in the tone. To put Cuicateco words to existing tunes in other languages would be a total loss since the music would mar the meaning so much that it could not be understood."
"To compose songs in Cuicateco the relativity of the tones on the words must be preserved in the music."

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
From the introduction, "Dr. Thomas' paper is to be applauded as an indication that some Wycliffe linguists have joined in the growing rapprochement between linguists and philosophers of language. Philosophers have devoted much attention to subtle analyses of the semantics of certain subparts of language, namely those which are "philosophically interesting." However limited this corpus may be, it behooves linguists to find out how much of the scientific work of philosophers can be salvaged for use in dealing with semantics in linguistics. Similarly, those logicians of wide vision who wish to expand the notation of symbolic logic to capture …

Vocational Office Education In The European Economic Community Countries: An Interpretive Analysis With Specific Emphasis On The Secondary School Level, Helene L. Zimmerman
Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this study was to describe, analyze, and compare the vocational office education programs of the six European Economic Community countries (Belgium, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands). In these vocational office education programs, specific emphasis was placed on the secondary school level. The following facets were represented in the description and analysis of each country's program and in the comparison of the programs of the six countries: (1) philosophy and objectives; (2) schools; where available; (3) organization, administration, and supervision of these schools; (4) how schools are financed; (5) curriculum, content of courses, …

A Study Of Changes In Vocational Interest Inventory Patterns And Scores After Two Years For Male College Students Initially Having No Primary Interest Patterns, Ralph Kent Roberts
Theses and Dissertations
Problem
The purpose of this study was to: (1) determine whether college males who had no primary patterns on an SVIB administered in 1966 developed primary patterns on a 1968 retest and whether there were significant proportional differences in the number of students having one or more primary patterns on their 1968 SVIB among the three treatment groups and the control group; and (2) determine if there were significant differences between the scale means of the 1966 and 1968 SVIB for two groups of students who were dichotomized according to primary or no primary patterns in 1968.

From Greek To Guarani, Robert E. Meader
From Greek To Guarani, Robert E. Meader
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
Using as an illustration a translation of Mark 5:19 from Koiné Greek to Guaraní, the author argues that faithful translation involves identifying the underlying semantic structure of a source text and expressing it in the target language, rather than mechanically transforming surface forms from source to target. Based on a detailed semantic analysis of the passage in the source and target languages, the degree of equivalence between them then indicates the degree of "literalness" or accuracy of translation. Specific issues that are discussed include obligatory features of one language that are not reflected in the other language, such as number …
