Effects Of Preoxygenation And Positioning Of Obese Patients During Intubation, Brandon M. Vesel Dec 2015

Effects Of Preoxygenation And Positioning Of Obese Patients During Intubation, Brandon M. Vesel

Theses and Dissertations

Local anesthetic systemic toxicity, due to misapplication of local anesthetic in an otherwise routine procedure, can result in deleterious effects. Although improved regional anesthesia techniques, effective test-dosing, and availability of less toxic local anesthetics have resulted in a decline in local anesthetic toxicity rates, adverse events do occur. A comprehensive review of literature was conducted and current research findings and documented case studies were systematically reviewed. The "lipid sink" phenomenon is the most widely accepted theoretical framework surrounding intravenous lipid emulsion treatment for local anesthetic induced cardiovascular collapse (Rothschild, Bern, Oswald, & Weinberg, 2010). Current evidence suggests that immediate infusion …

The Child Support "Tax" : Determining The Effect Of Child Support On The Income Growth Of Noncustodial Parents, Jesse Snook Dec 2015

The Child Support "Tax" : Determining The Effect Of Child Support On The Income Growth Of Noncustodial Parents, Jesse Snook

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the role of child support in determining income growth. Using an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) model with state-level fixed effects applied to panel data from the National Study of Families and Households (NSFH), I find that having a legal agreement to pay child support has a significant and negative effect on the income growth of the noncustodial parent. Specifically, after controlling for demographic variables and the respondent’s economic circumstances in the initial time period, the OLS model with state-level fixed effects finds that having a child support obligation is associated with a 17.73 percentage point decrease in …

Cerebral Oximetry During Shoulder Surgery In The Beach Chair Position, Jennifer L. Jorgensen Dec 2015

Cerebral Oximetry During Shoulder Surgery In The Beach Chair Position, Jennifer L. Jorgensen

Theses and Dissertations

Title: Cerebral Oximetry During Shoulder Surgery in the Beach Chair Position

Background: A non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) measurement of mean arterial pressure (MAP) has historically been the main parameter for ensuring adequate cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) vvhen patients are placed in the beach chair position (BCP). Rare but catastrophic neurological injuries have been re ported following the BCP for shoulder surgery, possibly wa!1'anting the use of real-time, site -spec ific monitoring of oxygenation and perfusion at the level of the brain w ith cerebral oximetry

Purpose: The purpose of this report is to determine if the addition of …

Anesthesia Implications Of Pediatric Obesity, Jency Jacob Dec 2015

Anesthesia Implications Of Pediatric Obesity, Jency Jacob

Theses and Dissertations

Title: Anesthesia implications of pediatric obesity

Background: Pediatric obesity is becoming an epidemic nationally and internationally. It poses several challenges to anesthesia providers because of the comorbidities associated with it. Anesthesia challenges posed by a 3-year-old obese patient led this author to do an independent study on pediatric obesity and anesthesia management.

Purpose: The purpose of this independent study is to review the current literature, epidemiology, comorbidities and practice recommendation regarding the anesthetic management of pediatric obese patients.

Process: A comprehensive literature review was conducted utilizing the University of North Dakota's Harley. E. French library web~i.te. …

Instrumental Music Participation And The Differences In Academic Performances For Students In Poverty, Shawn A. Oban Dec 2015

Instrumental Music Participation And The Differences In Academic Performances For Students In Poverty, Shawn A. Oban

Theses and Dissertations

Because of the emphasis on No Child Left Behind and high stakes testing, school districts and administrators have been limiting or eliminating fine arts courses from an already shrinking curriculum, focusing on the subjects being tested. Students living in poverty are often entering formal schooling behind academically.

The researcher examined longitudinal test data from 2010-2015 from middle school aged students in a large Midwest school district. The researcher focused on test scores from the sixth grade when instrumental music was offered, examined test data from tenth grade, and studied academic growth. All student scores were included, but the independent variables …

Behavioral Response To Threat (Brtt) As A Key Behavior For Sexual Assault Risk Reduction Intervention: A Critical Review, Raeann E. Anderson, Shawn P. Cahill Nov 2015

Behavioral Response To Threat (Brtt) As A Key Behavior For Sexual Assault Risk Reduction Intervention: A Critical Review, Raeann E. Anderson, Shawn P. Cahill

Psychology Faculty Publications

Despite extensive research on sexual assault, study of the processes and behaviors central to responding to sexual assault threats is limited. The purpose of this paper is to provide a critical, narrative review of the literature on behavioral response to threat (BRTT) highlighting BRTT as mechanism of self-defense interventions and process of sexual victimization. Empirical findings regarding measurement, styles, effectiveness of different styles of BRTT, and facilitators and barriers of BRTT, are reviewed. Most individuals engage in some type of active behavior when faced with a sexual assault threat; yet, the range of the behaviors elicited can be broad and …
