Evaluative Discourse As Community Identity Among Expatriates In Shenzhen, China, Karyn Harding
Evaluative Discourse As Community Identity Among Expatriates In Shenzhen, China, Karyn Harding
Theses and Dissertations
Expatriates are a modern-day community built by a rapid advance towards globalization. Expatriates are now likely to be self-initiated; that is, they chose to live in a foreign country rather than having been sent there by an employer, and they are changing the face of the global job market. However, their social interactions have not been the subject of much previous study. This paper delves into the ways that expatriates build and maintain their communities. In this case, participant observation and discourse analysis are used to study an expat community living in Shenzhen, China. As a group not defined by …

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (Copd) And The Nutrition Care Process, Emily Anderson
Nutrition & Dietetics Student Publications
This paper displays the role that Registered Dietitians can play in the care of patients with COPD and it’s related side effects. A registered dietitian nutritionist’s (RDNs) job is to ensure adequate care through thorough assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation, otherwise known as the Nutrition Care Process (ADIME-NCP). Through the story of my uncle and his journey with COPD you are able to understand the struggles this chronic disease can have and how RDN’s play a role in their care.

Practitioner's Guide To Small Unmanned Aerial Systems For Bridge Inspection, Sattar Dorafshan, Robert J. Thomas, Calvin Coopmans, Marc Maguire
Practitioner's Guide To Small Unmanned Aerial Systems For Bridge Inspection, Sattar Dorafshan, Robert J. Thomas, Calvin Coopmans, Marc Maguire
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications
Small unmanned aerial system(s) (sUAS) are rapidly emerging as a practical means of performing bridge inspections. Under the right condition, sUAS assisted inspections can be safer, faster, and less costly than manned inspections. Many Departments of Transportation in the United States are in the early stages of adopting this emerging technology. However, definitive guidelines for the selection of equipment for various types of bridge inspections or for the possible challenges during sUAS assisted inspections are absent. Given the large investments of time and capital associated with deploying a sUAS assisted bridge inspection program, a synthesis of authors experiences will be …
A Review Of Autobiographical Memory Studies On Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Yujia Zhang, Sara K. Kuhn, Laura Jobson, Shamsul Haque
A Review Of Autobiographical Memory Studies On Patients With Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorders, Yujia Zhang, Sara K. Kuhn, Laura Jobson, Shamsul Haque
Psychology Student Publications
Background
Patients suffering from schizophrenia spectrum disorders demonstrate various cognitive deficiencies, the most pertinent one being impairment in autobiographical memory. This paper reviews quantitative research investigating deficits in the content, and characteristics, of autobiographical memories in individuals with schizophrenia. It also examines if the method used to activate autobiographical memories influenced the results and which theoretical accounts were proposed to explain the defective recall of autobiographical memories in patients with schizophrenia.
Methods
PsycINFO, Web of Science, and PubMed databases were searched for articles published between January 1998 and December 2018. Fifty-seven studies met the inclusion criteria. All studies implemented the …

Psychological Pathway From Obesity-Related Stigma To Anxiety Via Internalized Stigma And Self-Esteem Among Adolescents In Taiwan, Chung-Ying Lin, Meng-Che Tsai, Chih-Hsiang Liu, Yi-Ching Lin, Yi-Ping Hsieh, Carol Strong
Social Work Faculty Publications
The objective of this research was to examine the pathway from public stigma, to perceived stigma, to depression in adolescents via internalized stigma. Adolescents in grade 7 through 9 from a junior high school in Changhua County in Taiwan completed self-administered surveys from March to July in 2018. Adolescents were asked questions regarding depressive symptoms, obesity-related perceived stigma, and internalized stigma. Structural equation modeling was used to fit the pathway model. The pathway was first analyzed with the full sample and then stratified by actual and perceived weight status. Our final analytic sample consisted of 464 adolescents. The pathway model …

An Experimental Investigation Of Victim Blaming In Sexual Assault: The Roles Of Victim Sexual Orientation, Coercion Type, And Stereotypes About Bisexual Women, Christina Dyar, Brian A. Feinstein, Raeann E. Anderson
An Experimental Investigation Of Victim Blaming In Sexual Assault: The Roles Of Victim Sexual Orientation, Coercion Type, And Stereotypes About Bisexual Women, Christina Dyar, Brian A. Feinstein, Raeann E. Anderson
Psychology Faculty Publications
Bisexual women are more likely to be sexually assaulted and to receive negative reactions to disclosures of sexual assault than heterosexual and lesbian women. However, few studies have examined the extent to which victim sexual orientation and related factors influence perceptions of sexual assault victims and perpetrators. To fill this gap, the current study used an experimental manipulation to examine the influence of victim sexual orientation and coercion type on perceptions of sexual assault victims and perpetrators. Participants (N = 826) were randomly assigned to read one of nine vignettes in which the sexual orientation of the female victim …

Comparison Of Hemodialysis And Peritoneal Dialysis Outcomes In The Older Patient Population, Dane Rasmussen
Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Papers
The objective of this research and systematic literature review is to determine the dialysis modality of choice for elderly patients with end-stage renal disease. This literature review will compare the outcomes of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis, which will be judged by morbidity, mortality, and quality of life. In this review, PubMed, Embase, and DynaMed were searched using a specific set of keywords and mesh headings. Results of the searches were then filtered to include human-only studies, patients over 65 years old, and published within the last ten years. There were 12 studies that met inclusion criteria and were selected for …

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications
Background: Emerging evidence suggests that children become fatter and less fit over the summer holidays but get leaner and fitter during the in-school period. This could be due to differences in diet and time use between these distinct periods. Few studies have tracked diet and time use across the summer holidays. This study will measure rates of change in fatness and fitness of children, initially in Grade 4 (age 9 years) across three successive years and relate these changes to changes in diet and time use between in-school and summer holiday periods.
Methods: Grade 4 Children attending Australian Government, Catholic …
Use Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing To Estimate Water Quality, Mbongowo J. Mbuh
Use Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing To Estimate Water Quality, Mbongowo J. Mbuh
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Approximating and forecasting water variables like phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter, and turbidity are of supreme importance due to their strong influence on water resource quality. This chapter is aimed at showing the practicability of merging water quality observations from remote sensing with water quality modeling for efficient and effective monitoring of water quality. We examine the spatial dynamics of water quality with hyperspectral remote sensing and present approaches that can be used to estimate water quality using hyperspectral images. The methods presented here have been embraced because the bluegreen and green algae peak wavelengths reflectance are close together …

Clinical Practice In A Legal And Forensic Context, Stacey Benson, Joseph Miller, Richard Wise
Northern Lights Psychology Conference
Practicing Psychologists confront a variety of legal and ethical challenges, but those who practice in forensic settings, or who practice in areas that overlap routinely with the legal system, face more regular challenges that necessitate training and experience beyond that of the typical Psychologist. Our panel, consisting of Dr. Stacey Benson, Dr. Joseph Miller, Dr. Richard Wise, and graduate students will describe the diverse settings in which they work, and the vicissitudes of applied work in the legal/forensic field.

Barefoot Running: Effects On Emg Activity Of Gluteus Medius And Tensor Fascia Latae In Habitually Shod Runners, Bailey Neubauer, Zach Drevlow, Alexandra Gerlach
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Purpose/Hypothesis: Running has been a common practice in humans since the species’ dawn. Due to its relative ease and low cost, running continues to be one of the most popular forms of exercise today. Although running provides many benefits such as disease prevention, injury prevalence in running is high. The trend of minimalist shoes and barefoot training has gained popularity over the decade as a return to a more natural form of running. Some researchers hypothesize that barefoot running can reduce injury rate by changing the biomechanics of the runner. In this study we propose a different hypothesis: barefoot running …
