School-Aged Children With Severe Disabilities And Limited Verbal Language: Exploring The Importance Of Social Interactions And Friendship, And Its Application In Practice, Kristina Brodal Syversen
School-Aged Children With Severe Disabilities And Limited Verbal Language: Exploring The Importance Of Social Interactions And Friendship, And Its Application In Practice, Kristina Brodal Syversen
Theses and Dissertations
Social interactions and friendships with peers have been found to be essential to children’s and adolescents’ development, learning, and overall quality of life. However, research shows children and adolescents with severe disabilities and limited verbal language have fewer friendships and quality social interaction with peers than those without disabilities. This still occurs today, despite the implementation of the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) legislation in 1978. One of the goals of the LRE was to maximize the opportunities children and adolescents with disabilities have when it comes to social interactions with peers in the general education classroom. However, as the general …
Predictors Of Fruit And Vegetable Intake Among University Students, Ashley Citrowske
Predictors Of Fruit And Vegetable Intake Among University Students, Ashley Citrowske
Theses and Dissertations
Students’ food preferences may change and develop while attending college. These changes could have an impact on their nutritional health during enrollment and after graduation and, as an extension, their disease risk and overall health. College students living on or near a campus are a convenient population to provide health and nutrition education. A cross-sectional, secondary analysis was completed on NCHA-ACHA health survey data from one public, Midwestern university. Survey questions relating to dietary behaviors were included in this secondary data analysis. Females were more likely to report higher intake of fruits and vegetables compared with males. Fruit and vegetable …
Masculine Honor Ideology: An Unrecognized Risk Factor For Aggressive Behavior, Mara Norton-Baker
Masculine Honor Ideology: An Unrecognized Risk Factor For Aggressive Behavior, Mara Norton-Baker
Theses and Dissertations
The societal and personal costs of aggressive and violent behavior have reached alarming levels within the United States. In the literature, several personality and personal factors have been uncovered as valuable predictors of aggressive and violent behavior. However, it may be the case another variable has been unduly discounted in its link to aggression. Masculine Honor Ideology (MHI) refers to a set of beliefs that dictate men must respond aggressively to threat or insult in order to maintain their ideal masculine reputation. The intent of the current study is to demonstrate the robust relationship that exists between MHI and lifetime …
The Relationship Between Saudi Citizen Perceptions Of Vision 2030 And Saudi Government Social Media Use To Promote Vision 2030, Essa Saleh Alkathiri
The Relationship Between Saudi Citizen Perceptions Of Vision 2030 And Saudi Government Social Media Use To Promote Vision 2030, Essa Saleh Alkathiri
Theses and Dissertations
Public relations (PR) tools have enabled more communication between governments and citizens in the whole world. However, a single communication channel could be widespread among many governments. These PR tools help governments to share national goals, projects, and programs with their citizens. Grunig and Hunt (1984) highlighted that the value of two-way communication channels is better suited to develop an understanding between public organizations (i.e. governments) and citizens to establish both internal and external mutual public-organization or citizen-government understanding. However, the practical implementation of two-way communication channels for the government-citizen relationships and dialog remains is unclear. As a result, the …
Motor Competency's Relationship To Interpersonal Coordination In Stationary Basketball Dribbling, Daniel Bell
Motor Competency's Relationship To Interpersonal Coordination In Stationary Basketball Dribbling, Daniel Bell
Theses and Dissertations
A gold standard for student pairing strategies in a physical education setting has still yet to be discovered and is a widely debated topic in the field. Inclusion and equitable learning environments are areas of emphasis for practitioners while trying to find new ways to elicit these things to benefit students. Interpersonal coordination (IC), a social phenomenon on which this study focused, has direct applications for pairing strategies in physical education. In essence, IC is a state in which two individuals non-consciously mimic each other’s motor patterns. IC was measured between 182 student pairings performing stationary basketball dribbling. Participants included …
Physical Activity And Depression In Mothers Of A Child With A Special Health Care Need: Informing Future Interventions, Brianna Jean Black
Physical Activity And Depression In Mothers Of A Child With A Special Health Care Need: Informing Future Interventions, Brianna Jean Black
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, approximately 20 percent of all children have a special health care need. Additionally, mothers of a child with a special health care need have worse overall well-being, mental and physical health compared to mothers of typically developing children. Physical activity may improve depressive symptoms and overall health in these mothers; however, little is known about the acceptability of physical activity interventions for mothers of a child with a special health care need. Therefore, the primary aim of this study was to understand more about mother’s desire to use physical activity to improve depressive symptoms after having …

Change Theory And Perceptions Of Innovation From Educators Within K-12 Schools In The State Of North Dakota, Ryan P. Lyson
Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the years, policies and mandates have influenced education and forced many school districts, administrators, and teachers to change instructional practices, content, and the overall structure of the school day. Accountability is a common theme in education because many school leaders and districts are trying to work within the parameters given by the State of North Dakota in order to meet the requirements for the state standards which are founded on common core, accreditation visits, state-mandated assessments, and teacher-evaluation components. Innovation is a compelling topic in education; however, there has not been much research that focuses on North Dakota

Objectives: As mass shootings have become more frequent in recent years, one question that arises is whether the public’s attention and memory of these mass shootings may be becoming less salient over time. To evaluate changes in the saliency and public interest in these tragedies, this two-part study 1) utilized open access data from Wikipedia and 2) measured the presence of flashbulb memories (FBM) for these events.
Methods: For Part I, changes in byte size and edits in 19 mass shooting Wikipedia articles were examined over 12 months to determine public interest in these events. In Part II, 500 participants …
Juror Perceptions Of Interview Quality From Child Victims With Autism, Megan Blackburn
Juror Perceptions Of Interview Quality From Child Victims With Autism, Megan Blackburn
Theses and Dissertations
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect multiple memory abilities, including episodic memory, source monitoring, and relational processing. The possibility of these memory deficits can affect how a child with ASD testifies in court if they are the victim or witness to a crime. These testimonies are especially crucial for Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) cases where one of the biggest challenges is the lack of physical evidence in most cases, which leads to an abundance of trials relying on the initial forensic interview with the victim and victim testimony. Due to this, and the increased chance of affected memory abilities, it …

Tests such as Russia’s BIOS series, NASA’s Lunar-Mars Life Support Test Project (LMLSTP), ESA’s Micro-Ecological Life Support System Alternative (MELiSSA), and Japan’s Closed Ecology Experiment Facilities (CEEF) have shown that microalgae and higher plants combined with physical-chemical material converters can be a successful part of a Biological Life Support System or a Closed Ecological Life Support System. LMLSTP, MELiSSA, and CEBAS experiments as well as commercial Ecosphere products have proven stability at …
The Effects Of Modulating Accommodative-Vergence Stress Within The Context Of Operator Performance On Automated System Tasks, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt
The Effects Of Modulating Accommodative-Vergence Stress Within The Context Of Operator Performance On Automated System Tasks, Kyle Anthony Bernhardt
Theses and Dissertations
Automated systems (e.g., self-driving cars, autopilot) can reduce an operator’s (i.e., driver, pilot, baggage screener) task engagement, which can result in mind wandering, distraction, and loss of concentration. Consequently, unfavorable performance outcomes, such as missed critical signals and slow responses to emergency events, can occur. Because automation reverts the operator to a “visual monitoring” role, the oculomotor accommodative-vergence responses (the oculomotor responses that maintain a single focused image on the retina) may play a vital role in human-automation interactions. Prior research has shown that individuals with deficits in the accommodative-vergence responses can exhibit inattentive symptoms (e.g., poor concentration) characteristic of …

Faculty Perspectives: Understanding And Responding To Stress Management Needs In The Occupational Therapy Doctorate, Alyson Rae Wilhelmi Downs
Theses and Dissertations
Occupational therapy programs are currently pursuing the transition to an entry-level occupational therapy doctorate (OTD). Due to the novel change with this population, minimal research exists on how faculty are understanding and constructing a process to manage stress, promote wellbeing, and foster self-efficacy for themselves and the benefit of students during this time of transition. The concepts of habituation and social cognitive theory frame inquiry and understanding of the research problem for the development of a constructivist grounded theory study. A total of nine faculty and staff members at a Midwest OT program in the midst of programmatic change to …

Montana Coaches' Perceptions On Including Transgender Athletes In High School Interscholastic Sports And Its Effect On Team Chemistry, David L. Woods Ii
Theses and Dissertations
The eligibility of transgender students to participate in high school athletic sports is a polarizing topic in the United States of America. Questions of fairness within each competitive sport, along with precedents set in law and policy, both by the United States and by International Sporting Organizations such as the International Olympic Committee, shape arguments for or against transgender high school students' eligibility. Each state faces the decision of whether to base high school transgender athletes' eligibility in high school sports according to their gender identity, or their sex assigned at birth.
The study aimed to identify Montana high school …

Preoperative Smoking Cessation Education Plan For Patients And Health Care Professionals, Amy Anderson
Preoperative Smoking Cessation Education Plan For Patients And Health Care Professionals, Amy Anderson
Nursing Capstones
Surgical site infections are an undesired consequence of surgery. Smoking has been identified as a risk factor for developing a postoperative infection (Anderson, 2019). Patients undergoing elective colorectal surgery should be required to be tobacco-free for at least four weeks before surgery. Health care organizations can implement a preoperative smoking cessation program within their facility to assist patients in achieving this requirement. To do so, an education plan is needed to effectively disseminate the main components of the program to both patients and health care professionals. The efficacy of the education plan can be exponentially increased by selecting learning strategies …

Research demonstrates the importance of learner engagement and social presence achievement of student learning outcomes and increased student satisfaction. However, little guidance is available to educators on how to create effective online and distance education courses that are engaging, interactive, student-centered, and effective. A literature review was completed to determine which online and/or distance education teaching methodologies are best for improving student engagement, and therefore improving student outcomes. Thirteen articles published between January 2014 and December 2019 were identified from a search of two databases. Ten of these articles were further analyzed according to the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework. …

This paper will first focus on Limited English Proficiency (LEP) patients in healthcare. Information discussed will include data on the number of LEP patients who require healthcare, laws protecting LEP patients, …
Education Strategies For The Interdisciplinary Team Of An Early Mobility Protocol, Malori Paplow
Education Strategies For The Interdisciplinary Team Of An Early Mobility Protocol, Malori Paplow
Nursing Capstones
Implementation of early mobility protocols in the intensive care unit has been well documented to prevent multiple complications associated with prolonged immobility and to improve patient outcomes. Expectations to implement evidence-based healthcare is growing and the most difficult steps in the process is education and implementation, and it is often left to busy nursing leaders who may be unprepared for the challenge. The literature provides little direction for nurses regarding when to use specific educational strategies when implementing an early mobility protocol, especially amongst the interdisciplinary team. The purpose of this paper is to create an evidence-based education plan for …

Training And Support Of Unit Preceptors_A Literature Review Of Most Successful Tools, Corinne E. Jones
Nursing Capstones
With nurses entering the workforce in the millions, preceptors are used to educate and train preceptees in clinical settings. A knowledge-practice gap exists when preceptors are put into their roles without any training regarding how to perform their preceptor duties. While preceptor education is desired among preceptors, there are no set standards for how preceptor training is delivered or what content is included. This paper reviews current literature and synthesizes results to form general guidelines regarding how best to deliver preceptor education and concept themes to be included in preceptor education. The databases CINAHL, PsycINFO, and ERIC were searched for …
