Laptop Education: Impact On Learning And Achievement, Christopher E. Mills
Laptop Education: Impact On Learning And Achievement, Christopher E. Mills
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to examine how 1:1 Laptop initiatives in the 10th, 11th, and 12th grade affected student achievement and student academic performance over the 2008–2009 school year at a selected small rural, Minnesota high school. The two variables in this study were: perceived student performance skills based on survey results from both student and teacher participants, and pre-existing Minnesota graduation testing results and grade point averages from Fertile-Beltrami School District students. The three questions that were researched in this study were: (1) What effects does a 1:1 Laptop initiative have on student academic performance based on …
Word Order Typology In Modern South Arabian Languages: A Study Based On A Corpus Of Analyzed Texts, David A. Cross Jr.
Word Order Typology In Modern South Arabian Languages: A Study Based On A Corpus Of Analyzed Texts, David A. Cross Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis I present a typological analysis of the Modern South Arabian Languages. Typological research is often based on a six-way typology of dominant word order based on clauses containing nominal subjects, objects and verbs. However, this clause type is extremely rare in this language group, making typological analysis based on a six-way typology problematic.
Dryer's Four-way typology of dominant word order is applied to the Modern South Arabian Languages and they are shown to be VS&VO. Greenberg's universals which refer to dominant word order are then reformulated in terms of the Four-way typology. These reformulated universals are shown …
Historical Memory Of Mount Rushmore, Justin J. Mayer
Historical Memory Of Mount Rushmore, Justin J. Mayer
Theses and Dissertations
The Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hilis of South Dakota lias differing economic, cultural, political and religious meanings. Particularly, an American or "white" interpretation and the interpretations of the Sioux Nation. These different perspectives of Mount Rushmore reveal more about the history of the Black Hills of South Dakota and how cultures redefine events to meet contemporary needs. This thesis examines the original intentions for the Mount Rushmore National Memorial and traces how the monument was described to others during construction. An examination of presidential speeches and remarks made about Mount Rushmore during construction helps discern one political …

Sense Of Connection And Learning In Traditional And Online Courses At A Rural-Serving Community College, Jayne M. S. Kiner
Sense Of Connection And Learning In Traditional And Online Courses At A Rural-Serving Community College, Jayne M. S. Kiner
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to establish an overall measurement for student sense of classroom community in terms of the theoretical dimensions of emotional connection, and needs fulfillment (learning). Further intent was to determine the nature of differences, if they exist, between delivery method (traditional or online), teaching style cluster (containing formal authority style or facilitator style), course type, student’s residence (on-campus, off-campus commuting, or off-campus not commuting), age, and student major on sense of classroom community in terms of emotional connection and learning.
Quantitative research methods were used with a causal-comparative design and survey instruments. Differences were determined …
"You Know How It Works, It Is A Dance, An Art, Not A Science": A Science Study On Decision Making By Public Two-Year College Presidents, Chad M. Coauttee
"You Know How It Works, It Is A Dance, An Art, Not A Science": A Science Study On Decision Making By Public Two-Year College Presidents, Chad M. Coauttee
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to explore the decision making processes of public two-year college presidents. This research examines the factors that influence a public two-year college president's decision to respond or not respond to external stakeholders who request new or improved programming/services from the college. The researcher incorporates the concept of naturalistic decision making to augment Stark and Lattuca's ( 1997) model that illustrates influences on the college educational environment to examine how presidents respond to requests made by external stakeholders.
The researcher found that when presidents make decisions about responding to external stakeholder requests they are not …
Handedness As A Predictor Of Success In Far Part 141 Flight Training, Danielle Dracy
Handedness As A Predictor Of Success In Far Part 141 Flight Training, Danielle Dracy
Theses and Dissertations
The current study assesses the prevalence of left-, right-, and mixed-handedness and handedness as a predictor of success in flight training. The convenience sample is comprised of students enrolled in or who have previously completed the private pilot course at the University of North Dakota’s Part 141 flight training program. The Edinburgh Handedness Inventory and self-report methods are used to determine subject’s handedness. Success in flight training is assessed using student computerized academic and flight records. Statistical analysis of the data does not show a significant difference between left-, right-, and mixed-handed students with any of the measures used. This …
The Meaning Of Development Of Filipinos By Filipinos In Diaspora: Rhetorical Vision In Participatory Communication, Louella Lim Lofranco
The Meaning Of Development Of Filipinos By Filipinos In Diaspora: Rhetorical Vision In Participatory Communication, Louella Lim Lofranco
Theses and Dissertations
Development is currently one of the drivers of international migration resulting in south-to-north or third-to-first world movements of immigrants seeking for a better life in more developed countries. Consequently, new economic diaspora communities are being formed, most of which help alleviate poverty of relatives back home through regular remittances, now considered an important source of foreign capital in many developing economies. Amidst new challenges for the field of development is the question of the relevance of development communication in migration and diaspora. This exploratory study investigates the role of participatory development communication in expanding diaspora contributions to their home countries. …

A Cultural Competence Guide For Occupational Therapists: Addressing Major Health Issues Of The Eastern Shoshone & Northern Arapaho Tribes, Crystal Nelson, Ashton Wilcox-Brown
A Cultural Competence Guide For Occupational Therapists: Addressing Major Health Issues Of The Eastern Shoshone & Northern Arapaho Tribes, Crystal Nelson, Ashton Wilcox-Brown
Occupational Therapy Capstones
The authors have created a cultural competency guide on the history, culture, and beliefs of the Northern Arapaho and Eastern Shoshone tribes as well as an overview of current health concerns and resulting health disparities. The creation of the guide is necessary in order to provide information about these cultures to occupational therapists (OT) working with them. However, there is considerable lack of resources for discussing cultural competency regarding these tribes in relation to occupational therapy.
In preparing to create the guide, an extensive literature review was conducted to determine cultural issues and health disparities of the two tribes. Secondary …

Aligning Problem Solving And Gameplay : A Model For Future Research And Design, Woei Hung, Richard Van Eck
Aligning Problem Solving And Gameplay : A Model For Future Research And Design, Woei Hung, Richard Van Eck
Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications
Problem solving is often discussed as one of the benefits of games and game-based learning (e.g., Gee, 2007a, Van Eck 2006a), yet little empirical research exists to support this assertion. It will be critical to establish and validate models of problem solving in games (Van Eck, 2007), but this will be difficult if not impossible without a better understanding of problem solving than currently exists in the field of serious games. While games can be used to teach a variety of content across multiple domains (Van Eck, 2006b, 2008), the ability of games to promote problem solving may be more …
